Guestsorry that i sort of “flashed” out of here before…i really had more to say, but i’m at school and the bell rang shortly after i had the chance to write.
anyhoo, i wanted to say that i think that critics are too harsh on the virtuoso…many of them refer to elfman as a “hummer,” just because he doesn’t orchestrate most of his music. but i think that that’s no reason to bash his works, because he did compose the music! so what if he needs a little help from a professional to transcribe the notes onto an orchestral score…it’s the IDEA that counts.
i bought the dvd of pee-wee’s big adventure and listened to danny’s commentary. i thought it was amazing when he said he was self-taught (i, too, am a self-taught musician). i also thought about the real-ness of elfman as a person…he’s not very intellectual about music and sort of “mocks” the scholars who are. he proved that a Ph. D. is nothing but a piece of paper, and that it is possible to work your talents into a real, high-paying professional career!
i think that anyone who can make up music for film in a collaborative manner is a hard, persistant worker and deserves only good credit, whether or not they were professionally trained. and how many of the other composers do you know who have “elfman-sounding” cues in their music? (especially the elements found in edward scissorhands). i think danny elfman is the most original film composer of our time…i applaud him for every critic who boos his art!

GuestElfman hasn’t been considered a “hummer” for at least a decade. That kind of innuendo is out-of-date.

GuestTrue… he’s now more acknowledged – take the Golden Globes as an example. (But even now, I’m shocked and angered that Danny didn’t get this kind of recongnition, or better, straight after Edward Scissorhands – you can’t be an idiot and come up with something like that!)
