GuestWell… I haven’t heard much… But I think elfman is bored scoring sequels. I mean, look what he has done with MIB2. That was great, and he says he had fun… But obviously, scoring another MIB was boring enough for him to change totally the style of the soundtrack and make fun of it…
I read in a past interview that if he could erase everyday, everything he had done in the past, he would do it. Because if he doesn’t, he would end up making fun of his own ideas, or would be bored doing the same thing again and again…
This is the same reason why Danny stopped singing Weird Science in concerts. He said he was so bored with the song, that he had to chose between singing it and looking bored, or changing it in a ridiculous way…
I’m affraid Spiderman2 will sound like the score of a composer who’s bored doing the same thing again… That is only a supposition… Let’s wait and see.Eric

Guestwell i hope. cos i’m listening to edward scissorhands now just to remind of how fucking great danny is.

GuestYeah but comparing Edward Scissorhands with Spider-Man 2, what’s the point of that ?
Sometimes, I think some people would have prefer him to die than change his style in 1995.June 13, 2004 at 3:26 pm #50576Anonymous
GuestAwww…
Any “cliche” is what makes the composer! Danny has his signature moments, and that’s what’s important! It seems like a lot of people focus on originality instead of sheer “coolness.” Yeah, originality is definitely a good thing, but lately nobody just says “Oh, that cue was just too cool!” anymore. Ya dig?
(Yes, I just said exactly the same thing in another thread, if you don’t mind.)

GuestThis is a sequel to Spiderman 2, so you have to predict more of the same to some extent. With the clips I’ve heard it just sounds like more generic brass-filled action scenes. Nothing to blow my socks off just yet. I wouldn’t doubt if he was bored with doing another Spiderman movie. I mean, what if he hated the first movie? Scoring the second movie wouldn’t be all that fun.
I’m not really looking forward to this score in the first place, maybe because I’m not looking forward to seeing the movie either. I just wouldn’t get your hopes up too high.

GuestMy post was deleted….but i say it once again!!! Danny please forget about silly electronic stuff! And change your style back!

Guest“”Oh, that cue was just too cool!”
no body says that cos its not cool anymore…it used to be, but now its just tired. well man, danny hasnt changed his style much in recent years

GuestI think the electronic stuff works. If it works, it works. Big Fish barely had electronic stuff in it. He just uses it when it works, and it works within Spiderman. It also works within his other works that he’s done with films he’s worked on.

GuestFor “Big Fish,” the Finale was the only cue that had any hints of electronic percussion and it worked absolutely perfectly (right before the waltz kicks in as Karl the giant tips the car over).
Personally, I love the clips from Spider-Man 2, especially the Spidy Suite. It sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

Exactly, D-Bo! I actually say ‘That cue was just too cool!!’ more often than ‘this isn’t original’ – I don’t really care on the originality…well okay, I do, but only when I hear a good song being sung by a different band or two scores are a little TOO alike, but that doesn’t happen often (from the way I hear things)…Every composer needs and has a few notary notes or chords and such, and Danny is no exception!! *grins* Nice to see that someone else agrees with me on this…

GuestIf Danny really didn’t want to score spiderman2, then why would he? He doesn’t need the money. He’s an A-list composer, and can get any job he wants! If he hated it, but did it anyway, it would probably be so some second rate composer wouldn’t come in and score a watered down “elfmanesque” score.

GuestDanny has been using electronics from his very first score.

GuestI was browsing the sound clips on this site recently and I got attached to the 1996 theme from “Freeway.” I also got hooked on the 1997 scores to “Flubber” and “Men in Black.”I realized that he never really lost his old style. It’s in his nature to write very fun and querky scores. I even felt it in the Spidey Suite clip. Right after the big brass main theme ends with that one big note, there is some more quick brass before a bit of the Doc Ock theme somes in and it seems a lot like his sory of querkiness. I dunno, his music is still the best to mine own ears.
