Guestplanet of the apes is still his best recent work imho, but I’ve found I have to live with his scores for a couple weeks at least until I can fully appreciate them. This one still needs bit of time. It seems like Elfman’s action cues are more controlled and melodic on the hulk than on, say “Mars Attacks.” The jungle drums are cool, but not “over the top” like on POTA. I really like having to dig for themes through polyphony and textures, rather than have a simple theme repeated over and over. Elfman keeps getting better and better.

GuestDue to a lack of funds, I’ve only managed to find a clip from the Main Titles track. To me, it sounds like a fusion of Red Dragon and the original Batman theme. Thoughts?

GuestHere’s my question: Did Elfman score a remake to the old 1986 theme song?
I have yet to hear the soundtrack, but a buddy of owns it, and wasn’t sure about it when I asked him.
Hopefully someone will be able to tell me if Elfman was smart enough to throw in a bone for the old skool Hulk fans.
If not, I’ll be pretty disappointed.

GuestNope, no allusions to the original HULK theme on the CD or in the film. I saw the flick last night, and it’s really remarkable. I can’t imagine that the general public will love it, but I sure did! It’s a little long and intellectual at times, but I’m so happy to see a comic book movie done with this level of depth. Bravo! Nick Nolte might just be the creepiest character I’ve ever seen in a movie, and the rest of the cast is excellent as well. The funny thing about Danny’s score is that while it’s dark and chilling on the album, it’s even more so when you hear it in the film! It’s a bleak, dark movie and the score fits it like a glove. I think it’s as strong a score as Elfman has done and stands heads and shoulders above anything he’s written in the last couple years, other highlights for me being PLANET OF THE APES and the criminally unreleased FAMILY MAN. Of course, he had the advantage this time of composing for an abnormally good movie. If we’re ranking Elfman’s “comic book” scores, I’d move this one right up to the top, near both of his BATMAN scores. It’s that good — that strikingly original (for him) — and is already shaping up to be one of the best scores of the year.

GuestI concur.
For those who haven’t seen it yet, stay for the credits. You’ll see why when you read the song list.

GuestYeah, some additional cues were farmed out to other composers due to the time crunch. I knew that going into the movie and the fewnon-Elfman cues were really obvious to me right away. They are heard when Hulk escapes the military compound and on into some of the scenes taking place in Moument Valley / Southern Utah.

GuestI think the mother’s theme was credited to Mychael Danna, the guy who was originally supposed to score the film.
