GuestHey… this is only Elfman related in that he is one of my heavy influence and he’s also used interesting combinations of instruments in his works…
At the moment, I’m writing a symphony with a 4 piece punk band as solo instruments. Is this precedented? Does anyone know of programmatic orchestral music that uses popular-music bands? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks. James.July 6, 2004 at 8:00 am #51053Anonymous
GuestSounds more like a ‘quadruple concerto’ to me… or a ‘sinfonia concertante’? LOL. Sorry, my mind’s a blank on that one, but I thought I’d push your thread back to the top of the message board in case someone more intelligent than I missed it. :o)

GuestThere is a guy named Glenn Bracca (I think that’s it) who has written a lot of Symphonies using only Guitars and Percussion (but mainly Guitars), also Joe Jackson has written a “pop” instrumental symphony, but using about 8 musicians I think.
I’ll have to get out my CDs and make sure that information is correct.
No time now, gotta fly!

GuestUm, wouldn’t it be a Concerto Grosso? Anyhoo, Michael Kamen did that thing with Metallica but that was more written to the songs that the band already had. Danny did the crazy thrash metal to childlike theme thing for To Die For but that isn’t really an all-together piece as much as seperate ideas clashing against each other. Trevor Rabin does alot of heavy guitar stuff in his scores, so you might want to check out Gone in Sixty Seconds, The One, Bad Company, or something. Other than that I say go nuts with it, sounds like fun.
Knight (Who would love to do a crazy metal/orchestral hybrid but hasn’t come across a project that could use it….YET)

GuestKnight, you mentioning Kamen’s work with Metallica reminded me of Kamen’s Guitar Concerto that he wrote for Eric Clapton. Although it is written for Orchestra and solo Guitar it is still a great piece that is a great compliment to his Saxophone Concerto.
Both are highly recommended!
Kamen is truly missed by me.

GuestThanks all…
As for the question of concerti/concerti grossi, I think that there is not actually enough solo work/call-and-response between the two groups for it to be classified as that… In mine the band is playing as part of the orchestra… the only real solo sections for them is when they are introducing the themes (two punk songs are the themes in each movement, and the orchestra takes them and does developing things and so on). So… symphony with small solos? But don’t most symphonies have solo lines?
It could also be an orchestral song cycle, I guess… there is both the punk singer and an operatic soprano in it, but once again, not enough solo work.
Ah well! We shall see how it all pans out. I’ll post news for interested parties as we go along.
Later, and thanks again!

GuestSounds like a Symphonie fantastique to me. Good luck, Berlioz. :o)
