Another Variety article… this one about the scores that are most likely get an Oscar nom this year. BIG FISH is the first one listed!

    Big Fish (Danny Elfman)

For their 10th collaboration, director Tim Burton (news) and two-time Oscar nominee Elfman worked in a slightly different environment. “In practically every movie of Tim’s I can think of, the emotion has always come from not-quite human characters (‘Batman,’ ‘Edward Scissorhands,’ etc.),” says Elfman. “The emotional core of this movie is the human beings, although the father (Albert Finney (news)) is larger than life.”

Musically, Elfman was required to shift back and forth between reality-based scenes and Finney’s fanciful stories, which enabled him “to be much more broad. But when we’re in real time, I was trying to keep it simple, keeping melodies present all the time.”

His main theme, he notes, has both a bit of Southern lyricism and a somberness to it.

The emotional finale, some 12-plus minutes of music, was the sole focus of Elfman and Burton’s two weeks of working together. “My feeling was if I got that section of the movie, I had the whole score,” Elfman says.

I hope he wins every single award. The Main Titles is worth 10 awards alone. Besides, he deserves it.
