Every time we post something even remotely not Elfman-related on this forum, we pussy-foot around it by saying things like “Um, I know this is kind of off-topic, but, um, I’m gonna say it anyway, so, uh…seriously, this is way off-topic – don’t hate me because I’m not posting something about Elfman – but listen to this…um…”

It would be so much easier if we could just forget about that part altogether… What do you say, Ryan? (or, for that matter, all the other regulars?)

This is off-topic. This post has been designated for deletion.

Hehe – actually, I’d like us to keep just the one board. I love this forum so much because of its simplicity over all the others… only one board to look at, and none of that logging in crap. Its not like this board is getting overwhelmed by having ‘so many topics in one place’ or whatever. I like it as it is. Although maybe Ryan could do a liiiiiitle bit less off-topic blasting? At least leave it up for a little while, until the thread goes stale, maybe? Hey, I’m not moaning… I’m just an idealist at heart ;o)

This has become my favorite board. I used to use the FSM board all the time, but now I come straight here, then later on I might checkout the FSM board, but I hardly ever post on it anymore (it is a good board to get the latest breaking info). I think of this board as intimate, and I fee an affinity for most of the members here.

On a side note, I visit the JWFan.com board (John Williams) from time to time, but I can’t remember when I last posted there. I’ve tried Ryan’s Cinemusic board, but it just doesn’t have the members yet to make it a entertaining draw.

    Thank you Ryan,

This is the only board I go to. Other than random IMDB ones (but those places are evil).

Seriously though, it’s just one guy. How many topics are we expected to come up with? We’ve become a pretty close community here on the board I think, and I think there should be more leniency (I might have spelled that wrong) as to the topics that are posted. It’s not like we’re gonna eventually stop talking about Elfman one day….whatever there is to say about him has or is going to be said. It just doesn’t seem as fun if we’re being restricted so tightly. Anyway, I’m going to go listen to a Danny Elfman cd now, because he is the best! Don’t you all agree?

I’ve split the board before, then I got complaints that people couldn’t zoom right into the discussion. They didn’t like that they had to choose which forum to enter!

The only problem I see with running an off-topic forum is that I have to tend the garden so to speak — and it’s a pain in the ass as it is! :)

I don’t mind an interesting off-topic conversation, but I’m not the least interested in hearing about your favorite indie band, pet turtles, tattoos or how great FUTURAMA was (it wasn’t). I know this sounds harsh, but time is tight these days, and there are so many more options out there for more personal chitchat than this board.

What I suggest doing is contacting people from this board through e-mail and getting into the habit of using AIM or Messenger to trade the quick anecdotes.

This board has sort of replaced the News section of the site, simply because I don’t have time to update like I used to. It would be unfortunate if people had to wade through a whole bunch of posts to get to the meat.

For now it’s fine if the regulars want to post interesting, quasi-non-Elfman topics and we’ll see what happens. Just remember I am extremely cranky on the weekend (work and stress withdrawal I guess!) so I get the “delete thread” button warmed up!!

I’ve nothing interesting to say on regular topics, let alone off topics. I dig this board because it is just about Danny–I mean, there are other boards where you can talk about other stuff. (I go to the Tim Burton Collective for talking and all–mostly because they gave Danny his own spot, too). But it’s nice that this is just about the boy and his work.

And it’s snazzy that it’s just a small group of people (granted it’s added quite a few members as of late–but it’s still relatively small). And I like recognizing the same people over and over and over. I mean, you can tell who posted what without even having to look at the names, you dig? And, that’s something you don’t always get on the other boards.

I guess I can kinda see where you’re coming from. I went to a Radiohead message board once, looking for some opinions or something on the band from the actual fans, and all that was there was a bunch of really weird people talking about a bunch of really weird, non-Radiohead related stuff. It was really upsetting, actually, because since this is the only board I tend to regularly, I was expecting it to be like this one. So in a way it’s kind of refreshing to go to a board like this. It’s just sometimes there’s things I want to post here, because I have a lot in common with most people that come here and I feel as though you guys would understand/relate/be interested, but doesn’t have much to do with Elfman, and when those times occur I worry for feeling so restricted and worry about getting deleted and looking like an ass to Ryan.

But what can I say? I’m used to the board now and have a pretty good feel as to what I can put and what I can’t, so I might as well keep playin by the rules and enjoy coming to my home message board.

I totally agree with everyone – the second we get a split forum, this place will become far less intimate… I can feel that there’s a whole lotta love in this forum. lol
And yeah, it’s definately great to be seeing and recognising the same people posting. I build up a kind of character for each person in my mind (although they’re probably all very inaccurate – it’s like the characters you read in a book, I suppose). Yeah – this is an excellent board. And isn’t funny how this is the only board I’ve ever come across that you don’t have to register as a “member” for, but it’s got the tightest forum community I’ve ever come across! I’ve been a “member” of the Jerry Goldsmith forum for a while now, but hardly ever post on there – too many people!!

For real? That’s hilarious! How difficult can it be? If it’s about Elfman, it goes in one forum, if not, it goes in the other.

I see your point about time, though – there’s never enough of it to go around. If you get THAT pressed for it, you could always appoint a moderator for the board – give ’em a set of rules and access to certain parts of the admin section.

Ok, so I don’t post as much as I used to, but I’d agree with Ryan: if you want to chat with people from the board on non-Elfman related topics, leave your email addy in the designated “reply to this message” slot. Chat through email or Instant Messenger. It works; I’ve chatted with several posters in that manner, in fact. I do enjoy the simplicity of this board – you avoid having to wade through the meaningless “Hey, it’s 3:34 a.m. and I’m having pancakes without boysenberry syrup…see, on Saturdays, my boyfriend likes to morph into Superman…but somebody stole his phonebooth so now he’s got to use our dryer and it’s a wee bit tight in there, so he’s always cranky and consequently hasn’t picked up the requisite boysenberry syrup from the corner market ” posts.

However, Ryan’s comment on the “difficulties” of a dual board setup did leave me a bit perplexed. I mean, it’s really all point-and-click…nothing too difficult.

Nat and Evil Dead – Yeah, I dig the “affinity” comments you made – or those along the same lines. I’m with you on that one.

Burt – love the moderator idea. I think that’s a bang-up job – good thinking!

I may not have been writing in on this discussion board for long, but I’ve been reading it for well over a year, that would be back before “The J” and a bunch of others came around (sorry to single you out there pall, I’m actually glad you’re here, you’ve become one of the more active posters). I have seen other film music discussion boards on the internet, but this one has proven to be the best in my opinion. The information provided here is usually quite accurate (in a scary sort of way), and typically Elfman or Burton related, of whom most of us are fans. I personally do not mind off topic conversation as long as it is not too off topic. If one is talking about film music in general, whether written by Danny Elfman, John Williams, Elmer Bernstine, Hanz Zimmer, Henry Mancini, Jerry Goldsmith, Max Steiner, Ennio Morricone, or whoever, I feel that it is admissible here. The people on this board are quite knowledgeable about other composer’s works as well as Elfman’s (and if they aren’t they become that way fairly quickly). We’re all Elfman fans, and that means that we all know good work when we here it. So Elfman or not, if it might have some importance to us, it belongs. Now, a discussion about a hockey game, is a little too off topic (unless an Elfman composition was played at some point, and the game morphed in to a sort of violent ice ballet). Discussion about your pet fish’s funeral is too off topic as well (unless Danny Elfman personally composed and played music for the flushing ceremony, then we all want to know how you booked him, and if he does birthdays and barmitzvahs as well). I also welcome any Burton, Raimi, or Sonenfield related news, rather it has anything to do with Danny or not. This board has become my source for film industry news that I care about.

I totally agree with Ryan. This board is to my knowledge the only Elfman-related forum that managed to keep a certain degree of activity. Its simplicity, as other people noted, makes it really enjoyable.

However it’s always a good sign when people ask for such things as another place for general discussion : it means there’s a good mood here, and we guys want to share a little more points of view than just “So whaddya think of Elfman’s last ?” (to simplify to the extreme – there’s much more to find here). Plus, on a general level, it’s always interesting to know, for example, what are Elfman fans’ opinions on other composer’s scores.

NP : Hans Zimmer, THE LAST SAMURAI. It’s sort of an exotic version of THE THIN RED LINE, without the luminous inspiration. There’s a wonderful theme on track 4 (around 3’00”) that seems suspiciously familiar though).

Maybe there could be a way around not changing the format and still being able to talk and all.

Figure there could be one thread–and one thread only, so we don’t waste a ton of space and all (and we could track down and physically harm whoever doesn’t abide by that)–where everyone could briefly list what their other interests and topics of choice are.

And, if people are willing to talk about other stuff not related to the boy, then they could briefly list it there, and then post their email addresses. And, if you don’t want to talk to other people, you just don’t post your address on that page.

I’m thinking, it’d sort of be a makeshift electronic pen-pal-type-deal, I suppose. That way, say you want to talk about movies in general, you could search for someone else who’s listed movies as a general topic of interest–and then, ta-dah!

Or, it could just be a lame idea….

I agree. We need a forum at this site with things loosely related to Danny Elfman (other film composers, Tim Burton, stop-motion animation, musicals, Oingo Boingo, whatever!) I hate going to those forums on other websites with those idiots with their monosyllabic responses and moronic catch-phrases. This is an intelligent site for intelligent fans, and I think it’s a very good idea to create such a forum on this site.

I’m not looking for another forum to be added….I mean, that would take away from the Danny-ish-ness of this site.

Figure if that happened, sure we would say that we’d limit it to stuff Danny-related in some way, shape, or form–but then it’d only be a matter of time before new people jump in and start talking about stuff not related at all. And then, and then this place would end up just like the other places.

That’s why I’m voting to keep it as is, and maybe just open up a single thread where people can list what they’re interested in and where they can be contacted at. Sort of like a profile deal, maybe, only informal, that way it’s no extra work for Ryan.

Maybe, for the sake of new people coming and going, it could be a thread that always stays at the top of the page or something–that way it’s there for people to view at all times, and won’t work it’s way down the page and disappear into the land of other pages in which no one ever ventures.

That is true; it might take away the Danny Elfman-ish schtuff from the site. Maybe we shouldd just be careful about the relevance of our topics and try to keep on track.

I agree with the single thread thing, that’s cool. Avatars would also be good, but ONLY if they were kept really tiny… I hate it when people put up huuuuuge photos that make the page 10 times wider.
