GuestHello! I was wondering…..I have noticed that on A LOT of movie credits, it says that Danny Elfman did the music…..I am getting into “music creating” and am getting an IMAC soon! I was gonna get the software “Soundtrack” which says you can create your own music, at a price of $299.00 for the full version! I was wondering what Danny uses to create his music…..does he use a software??? Or does he “compose” ALL of it…..meaning, does he just not use a computer, and just plays the instruments or something! Sorry if this is confusing…..but I just wanna know what software to use for creating music of your own…..I would like to create “cute, catchy, Nightmare Before Christmas” type songs…..not like action “Mission Impossible” songs! Thanks so much!!!

GuestTry Finale!… If your into composing, and actually know how to write music. Check out the trial version here: http://www.finalemusic.com It’s called Finale Notepad. If you like it, I suggest buying the complete version; Finale 2003. I find myself sitting in front of this program, without a care in the world, just having fun with it.

Guestbuy sibelius for notation, and cubase for sequencing and doing your own recordings.

GuestDanny uses Digital Performer, the last time I checked, for his sequencer. He probably uses Giga Studio also. There’s no way you can match what he has, though, without a million bucks to spend, especially with his percussion collection. First, he creates orchestral mock ups on his computers, gives what he’s written to an orchestrator, then real players play what he’s composed – all in about 6 weeks, at the most!
I use SONAR for sequencing and, as of right now, free soundfonts for my sounds (soundfonts require a soundblaster card). You should also get a keyboard to hook up and, if you havn’t already, learn how to play it. It’s much easier to compose this way, and if you’re serious about composing the way Elfman does it’s almost a must. If “Soundtrack” is what I think it is (a program that basically does everything for you), DON’T GET IT!!! If you want to create your own music, this is not the way to go.

GuestWell, even if you have a million bucks to spend, you can’t match Elfman’s stuff, because most of that “Percussion Collection” is of instruments he made himself. Elfman uses a TON of stuff though, and it would be a hefty bill. Mr. Dantz is on the right track though, Soundfonts and SONAR is a damn good way to go because there are a billion soundfonts out there (and some of them acually sound ok hehe). But those are only on PCs, and in my opinion, that is the best thing to start on, NOT an IMAC.
Knight (Can someone post up the URL of that article where Elfman talks about everything he uses? I forgot where it is)

GuestWhat I meant was…..what did he start out using…..he couldn’t of just started out with a million dollars worth of software, could he??? Just for starting out, making music for movies, that’s what I am looking for! And for your information, (whoever said IMACs suck)…..I’ve heard that IMACs are better for making music and for making videos!!! And they look better, lol! I’ll just stick with Soundtrack, for you guys aren’t really answering my questions! I am not looking for a million dollars worth of software, just stuff for starting out! Thanks!!!

Guest… Ok … Now that I think about it, “Soundtrack” is probably what you’re looking for. Go for it…
-_-

GuestElfman started with a really bad MIDI sequencer on an Apple II (if I remember correctly) and a keyboard. He couldn’t even import the video to the computer because there was no support for it way back then. If you wanna go about it that way, go for it hehehe.

That’s what I thought. Either that, or this person’s 10 years old. . . Or something.

GuestI am currently doing some small scoring for no/low budget Independent films and have had to make the transition from my 4 track that I had for 10 years to doing it all on a machine. It all depends on what type of music do you want to do since most programs out there are made for specific things. I don’t have a mac (am working on it I know!) but I do know that Soundtrack is set up kind of like Sonic Foundry’s Acid Pro which is loop based. I currently use Steinberg’s Nuendo, which is a great MIDI/Multitracking DAW or Digital Workstation. can do some decent editing in it and the MIDI set up is really good. Also Protools is the big one, especially for Mac. Last I knew Digidesign offered a free version (8 tracks) for Mac and PC on their site and recommend giving it a try. If you can learn Protools you should be in great shape!
Mostly I would just do a lot of reading online and figure out what is out and what it is that you want to do music wise. Any of them have cool functions just for the price make sure you are happy with what you eventually do get.best of luck and stick with it, it is totally addicting and a lot of fun
