GuestMost of the replies on the topic “BEST ELFMAN WORK” stand for BATMAN RETURNS…Why…?

GuestPersonally, I think some of his best theme writing is in BATMAN RETURNS. Both the Catwoman theme and the Penguin theme are so sinister and sorrowful. The End Credits suite from that movie is one of the best pieces that Elfman has written. Also, the chior element from EDWARD SCISSORHANDS, which most fans seem to love, is all over this score. My only complaint about it is that the ‘Batman’ theme itself never really sounds all that powerful when it’s quoted in the score. It’s still one of Elfman’s best works, but you sort of want that theme to kick ass on the same level that it did in the first film’s score.

GuestI thought Batsy’s theme sounded pretty darn cool towards the end of “Wild Ride”

GuestOh yeah! I forgot about that cue! You’re right- that was pretty bad ass. I mean overall, though, the theme comes off a little flaccid. In the the second “Birth Of A Penguin” piece, for example.

GuestThe Batman Returns score is so marvelous because Elfman scored it.

GuestThis is my favorite because it’s the first score of Elfman’s I ever listened to and I rate “Selina Transforms” as my number one all-time favorite cue. It’s just that simple.
I love the Tim Burton/Christmas movie combo. Edward Scissorhands… Nightmare Before Christmas… Batman Returns… oh yeah.

GuestFull committal to the leit motif ideal for one time only. He, like Williams and others, still uses it (the theme-to-character/object/place idea is still one of the few really accessible and constructive musical techniques to be applied to visual accompaniment genres) but in a more relaxed (deconstructed?), loose fashion. BR is not only concentrated musicality in this sense but Elfman commits totally to the development and combination of these themes as the characters and situation dictate. Additionally, BR combines various sub-styles people associate with “classic” Elfman: circus music, choir, grotesquery, cascading strings, luminous orchestration, the Batman theme. Okay, the latter’s not a style, but it quickly became the composer’s calling-card to fame and fortune.
End of lecture. :o)

GuestI’ve always liked the Christmas/Burton movies that he’s scored, so it makes me antsy for Big Fish’s score. As for Batman Returns. I love that the sounds and the themes are just amazingly intertwined to what’s happening on the screen. Batman Returns is probably my favorite film score of all time, and obviously lots of others on this board think so.

GuestOh yes, Batman Returns score. WELL, I’m listening to the soundtrack right now, and I’d have to say that the Catwoman theme is the best part about it. The rest of the soundtrack is awesome too…..and works beautifuly with the movie. I LOVE the dark movie scores that Eflman creates. There’s a distinct sound to all his music. All of it…….is incredible. Better than John Williams.
