GuestMan, This Guy Is Hilarious. I Get What He’s Saying, But I Don’t. And For Some Reason, He Capitalizes Almost Every Word, Which I’m Trying To Do, But It’s Actually Very Difficult.

GuestOk. Same thing, but in rhymes.
Danny Elfman, Such a Great Composer
Makes me Feel Even Mozart is A Loser.
Sometimes When Listening to His Music,
You Can Do Nothing but Sit Back in Awe,
Forget Everything That Made you Sick,
And Calmly Realize It Has No Flaw.Let me quote the Man himself : “Silly ? Yes.”

GuestWhat do you mean by “Did”?
I DO love Elfman.
Is there something going on that I don’t know about?

To answer your question as simplistic as I can… because his music is never boring nor static – It’s always propulsive or transforming with its use of rhythm or harmony. So many film composers now-a-days think that a melody back by chords are all that needs to be done, but Elfman knows that there is more to it than that – he goes that extra mile in his writing (and it’s odd coming from a “rocker”).

GuestLove the poem! hehe
Anyhow, did I read Gothic? I’m sorry, but I wouldn’t classify anyy of Elfman’s music as “Gothic”. While it is dark, it’s not THAT dark and doesn’t have that type of sound (even in Batman). Actually, I have never really heard anything that I would consider “gothic”. Ok, let me explain, because this is a touchy thing with me. I do not consider any of the “goth” bands gothic, not do I consider dark music gothic, nor any instruments or how they are put together. While many people have touched on the feel of it (like in Tales from the Crypt or Batman) no one has yet to put it to full use. Elfman has never scored a movie that has called for that kind of score, and the majority of films that do need something like that never have that kind of music. For example, if there was a film made of Elizabeth Bathory (a NEW one), that would probably be gothic, and call for that kind of a score. Does anyone have any idea about what I am talking about?
Knight (I think I even confused myself)

GuestFace it. This guy is a freakin moron. Just leave it alone. He has like 18 usernames, always capitalizes everything he writes, and is always asking all these stupid questions. “When did we fall in love with Elfman?” …?? What the hell is that? lol
And I agree with Knight. Elfman’s music is not “Gothic” per se. It sometimes has really dark undertones (Batman, Batman Returns, Dolores Claiborne come to mind), but its not Gothic. Then he can turn around and make much more emotional (and I don’t mean sad) music like “Big Fish” and some of the new pieces of “Spider-Man 2”, like anything relating to Peter and MJ or Peter and Aunt May, or like the Doc Ock theme. Not the bold loud one, the more menacing creeping one.

GuestI first fell in love with the music in nightmare before christmas, I really like the beetlegeise theme, but that wasn’t the point when I actually said “who the hell scored this?”
It was in nightmare before christmas, the music outshines the visuals, which in a movie like that is hard to do. I like em, cuz he uses all the sounds I love, I’ve never had a keyboard that didn’t have the ahh choir used more than most patches. he has a darker quality to his music, and he knows how to be dark AND playful at the same time, which I haven’t heard anyone else do too well. When I found out he actually SANG the parts for Jack the Pumpkin king, I was really amazed..
Another thing I really love is his ability to capture the feel of a character, if you listen to the spider-man them for instance, the swing kinda delay in the main notes gives the impression of swinging, or the dock-ock sweet sounds like something huge walking around. I was alittle disappointed when I heard he doesn’t orchestrate his stuff, but if I made a film I didn’t score myself, he’d be my first pick, howard shore is the only one who even comes close.
