GuestI have a friend/classmate who will be heading off to England in April and working on Tim Burton’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie . . . so if everything is correct, that’s when and where it’s filming. Cool beans, no?

GuestCool beans, indeed. Capital!
What will your friend be contributing to the movie?

GuestIt feels kinda strange posting about people I know on a public bulletin board, but if you browse through some of my past posts you’ll probably get the gist of things . . . or e-mail me for more details or whatever. I don’t mean to dangle that info in front of anyone and then not give more, but again, it just feels kinda weird to post things like that.

GuestVery interesting indeed… anywhere near London? Infact, I think this is an emailing occassion…

GuestThe London thing doesn’t suprise me much. Burton once said that there are really only two places to do a big fantasy flick these days: London and LA. Burton’s been in France for the last few years so it made sense to me that he would just dust off the Chunnel pass rather than head to LA.
It was also announced a few weeks back that Philippe Rousselot will be shooting the movie. I was immensly dissapointed: I didn’t really dig the look of either BIG FISH or PLANET OF THE APES. Why is Emmanuel Lubezki shooting movies like THE CAT IN THE HAT? Burton should try to steal him away for another picture. Or hell… ANYONE he’s worked with before. Stefan Czapsky isn’t up to much. What about Peter Suschitsky? Even Tom Ackerman would probably be a more interesting pick.

GuestDon’t forget Vittorio Stororo, one of the finest today. Also, there’s Conrad Hall’s (Road to Perdition, American Beauty, In Cold Blood) son, Conrah Hall Jr., who’s just aching to channel his father’s work on a good film. With that said though, I thought Philippe Rousselot shot “Big Fish” with beautiful space, a kind of rare beauty that we don’t see too much in films these days. I can’t imagine that film looking better than it does.

GuestInfynitie?
You go to school with Tim Burton? Or was that facetiousness on Mr. Dantz’s part? Hey, if you do, can you, like, get me an audition?

…Ah well, I’ll just have to break into Hollywood the usual way…. Why on earth do I live in Australia….?

GuestJR – Hey, don’t knock your country! From a foreigner’s perspective, it’s beautiful. Honestly, I was prepared for a letdown when I traveled there a few years ago, and “Oz” exceeded all my expectations. The Aussies I’ve met are very generous, genuinely fun people. Just so you know, nearly every American I’ve ever talked to wants to go to Australia – and for good reason, too. You don’t have such a bad lot, man.

GuestOh god . . . way too funny. No, I definitely DON’T go to school with Tim Burton (!?!?!?!?!?!), but like I said, my classmate will be going off to work on one of his films in a week or two, and one of my instructors (one of my favorite people in the world) has worked on his films – on more than one occasion, I believe. The strange part? This school has absolutely nothing to do with filmmaking.
Break into Hollywood? Ugh . . . I read that 300 people move to Los Angeles each day to persue acting. Which explains why when I ask people here what they do, almost everyone answers that they’re an *aspiring* actor/director/screenwriter/whatever and they’re all in minimum-wage jobs to get by :-p My favorite conversation relating to that topic:
Her: I’ve done work on ______, worked on _____, and worked with ______.
Me: Oh, so you’re an actress?
Her: Yes.
Me: I don’t remember seeing you in ______.
Her: I’m a background artist.
Me: A background artist? Uuuh . . . an extra?
Her: (somewhat sheepishly) Yes.March 24, 2004 at 3:22 pm #49109Anonymous
GuestYes, I wasn’t entirely serious about not liking Australia, it is lovely. But working in the arts here (and especially in Queensland) is less so – by moving to the U.S. or Europe you triple or quadruple your chances of getting a job, and that’s even with the 300 people moving to L.A. a day. Statistically less than 5% of all people in the arts industry here are employed.
And yet, here I am, training for exactly that. (*wan smile*)
And as for Hollywood… theatre is my first love (*already sounding like a washed up movie star*) – and theatre is where I will be working. If I will be working… sigh.

GuestActually, I think Australia is getting bigger on the movie scene, though (excuse the pun)… Things like Matrix and moulin Rouge were filmed in Australia, as people are finding it to be a whole lot cheaper there. Also, it sounds like you get a better job done by the Australian crews… that’s just the impression I’m getting from a whole lotta DVD special features.

GuestOr they say I am ‘atmosphere’ …Like they are air or some inert gas or something.
At least they are trying to do something instead of staying in Kansas and wishing they could do something.

GuestHey, I live in the Midwestern US and it’s certainly no LA…but it’s got it’s own charm, nevertheless.
