GuestI’ve just checked IMDb.com, which claims that Danny Elfman will be scoring the new Tim Burton remake, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”!!! The movie should be great, as long as there are NO casting errors.
Wonder if it will be a musical…?

GuestHm. Well, we don’t even know if Danny’s doin’ the Big Fish movie. Or do we? Seems like a given, but you never know.

GuestYes, Danny’s officially signed to Big Fish. Dont’ know about Wonka. IMDB is probably jumping the gun, as they are apt to do.

GuestHas Burton been confirmed for WONKA? As in have you read it in any traditional media like newspapers, et al — anywhere other than the IMDB? I don’t trust the IMDB!

GuestWell, it was in Variety, traditionally a reliable print source. But then again, they also said Elfman was going to score Looney Tunes… I’m torn.

GuestI saw on the E! news ticker that Tim Burton has officially signed on to the movie. Come on, who else would he have compose it?

GuestJohn Williams?

GuestYes, Burton’s officially signed. Maybe he’ll pull a Spielberg and walk early, but who knows. I’m sure Danny *will* do it if Burton does, but as of yet, he’s not on board.

GuestOMG, I’ve just read that Tim Burton is choosing between mainly Michael Keaton and Christopher Walken as Willy Wonka!
Imagine…
Keaton: “Just step inside the Batmobile to reach our production line…”
Walken: “Please, scootch closer, childeren, I’m not going to bite! No soldering irons here!”Will the movie be worth Elfman’s time?
July 14, 2003 at 9:36 am #45925Anonymous
GuestI’d much rather see Keaton or Walken play the role… Rumor has it around my neck of the woods that Marilyn Manson is to play Wonka…. can you believe that crap?

Guest“Will the movie be worth Elfman’s time?”
Well, he did score Men in Black II.
July 15, 2003 at 6:22 pm #45947Anonymous
GuestTrue about MIB II…No, the rumor about Marilyn Manson is totally and completely false. He was rumored to be cast waaaaay before Tim Burton signed on. Tim Burton hires actors, not losers.
Actually, I thought about it, and I remembered that Christopher Walken is a pretty funny and talented guy. If you’ve seen him on SNL, he doesn’t have a bad singing voice, and if you’ve seen the Fatboy Slim “Weapon of Choice” music video, you’ll find that he’s quite the dancer…

GuestBut it doesn’t *have* to be a musical, does it?

GuestIt doesn’t have to be a musical.
Personally, I hate musicals, with few exceptions (Nightmare Before Christmas, Little Shop of Horrors). But if it’s an Elfman musical, I probably won’t have a problem with it.
I’m getting kind of annoyed with the comeback of the musical. First Moulin Rouge, then Chicago, now there’s a whole bunch more on the horizon. The only one I’ll actually see is John Turturro’s Romance & Cigarettes, and that’s just because the Coen Brothers are involved.

GuestDancer In The Dark, starring Bjork, was a wonderful modern musical that was a very dark film with a “twisted” take on the musical genre.
It is probably one of the saddest movies I have ever seen, but I watch it again and again for that reason. If you feel suicidal don’t watch this movie.
I love the musical genre, from Singing In the Rain and the Marx Bros. films, to Popeye (just released on DVD) and Disney musicals (animated, and live action, and both Bedknobs and Broomsticks anyone?).
The process of creating a musical is very fascinating to me, insomuch that I have written one. Though it was an Opera called Ragnarok; actually more of an Operetta of sorts I wrote with a friend (who wrote the libretto). I loved collaborating with him, and singing the songs together (yes I did make a demo tape of us singing, but No I’ll never let anyone hear it). The Opera did win 3rd place in a German Puppet Opera contest, but it was never performed (only the first place winner got that honor).
I’ve also written an Oratorio taking the Roswell incident and treating it as a modern American myth. I wrote the libretto to it, and it turned out to be a more cerebral and less song-like treatment.
I would love to write and all-out musical, but I’m looking for the right material and the right collaborator…
… hint, hint.
I think I’m done, sorry to drone on.

GuestIt better be a musical! I want Nightmare Before Christmas 2!
July 17, 2003 at 12:56 am #45958Anonymous
GuestI think Elfman should be Willy Wonka.
July 17, 2003 at 4:54 am #45961Anonymous
Guestlmao Mr. Dantz. I doubt that would happen after what happened with “The Gift” but hey, you never know hehe. I still think Depp would make a good Wonka, but who is gonna play Charlie??? I really cannot think of either Keaton or Walken playing Mr. Wonka, it just isn’t working in my mind…
Knight (Danny has to score it, he HAS to!)
July 17, 2003 at 5:55 am #45962Anonymous
GuestYeah, but just imagine if it did turn into a musical. Danny would be the perfect choice!
July 17, 2003 at 7:41 am #45963Anonymous
GuestYeah, but nobody other than us really know who Danny is. Nobody would go see it, which would mean no money, which means no Danny.

GuestYou could always bill him as the Husband of Bridget Fonda for more popular recognition.

GuestAlthough I hate the idea of such a great film being re-made, it might be cool with all new music/songs. I think the further this re-make is distanced from the original, the better it’ll be. Plus, fun new Elfman songs!
July 29, 2003 at 10:47 pm #46033Anonymous
GuestWell, as I’ve understood, it’s not even going to be a “re-make” of the first movie, but rather a new movie adaptation of the original book.
