GuestIn a few minutes from when this is posted, me, my sister, and my mom will be playing in an orchestra concert with an arrangement of Spider-Man (and I transcribed the percussion part to make it as accurate as possible). Hope it goes well.

GuestI didn’t know you played in an orchestra! Do tell us more about it (including what instruments you play), when you return. And I hope the performance turns out well.

GuestWhew! Well, I’m back. Yeah, I play in the Indiana University Southeast orchestra, directed by Dr. Joanna Goldstein, who also happens to be my piano instructor. So I play piano and, just recently, some percussion. My sister and mom play both play the violin, and my dad, who plays in the IUS Concert Band (which also performed today), plays the trumpet. My mom’s the concertmaster of the orchestra, and my dad, the 1st chair trumpet.
The concert was great overall, IMO. Here’s what we played:
Olympic Fanfare and Theme – John Williams
Chariots of Fire – Vangelis
Stardust – Hoagy Carmichael
Sounds of Simon and Garfunkel – Paul Simon
“The Wizard of Oz” Medley – Harold Arlen
Music from “Spider-Man” – Danny Elfman (arr. by John Wasson)
Raiders March – John WilliamsAnd the concert band (directed by Don McMahel):
Cole Porter on Broadway – Cole Porter
Big Band Spectacular – Arr. by John Higgins
Elvis in Concert – Arr. by Peter Kleine Schaars
Copacabana – Barry Manilow (arr. Naohioro Iwai) <---This is the coolest arranger!
America The Beautiful – Arr. by Carmon DragonAs far as the Spider-Man goes, those of you who’ve been around this board a while might remember that I started transcribing the Main Titles and Farewell so that the orchestra could play it. That would have been great, except Dr. Goldstein beat me to the punch by buying an arrangement instead. I was slightly dissapointed, but at least we got to play it. As far as I know, it’s the first work by Elfman that the IUS orchestra has played. Anyways, before we started rehearsing it, I took a peek at the score. The arrangement really wasn’t that bad, but I still think I could’ve done a better job. But what really stuck out like a sore thumb to me was the percussion, or lack thereof. So I asked the director that if I were to re-write the percussion part, would she use a more accurate version of it? She said absolutely, so within a week’s time, I managed to transcribe the percussion to be as accurate as I could possibly make it. I even wrote a part for a metal trash can lid! Basically the result of the performance of it was this statement by my dad: “I think the piece that was performed the best overall was Spider-Man, because it sounded like the orchestra really wanted to do their best and liked it so much.” I think I’ve talked enough. I’ll post it here as soon as I get the recording. Any questions?

GuestUnfortunately, it might be a while until I actually get the recording. For some odd reason, I have no idea why, the recordings of our concerts take incredibly long to get distributed. It really shouldn’t. Don’t count on hearing it fairly soon.

GuestYeah, Spider-Man’s my favorite Danny score on account of it’s the reason I got into his music. I love hearing other versions of the score, from MIDIs to ringtones to Cerulean Pictures to the new version of the theme in Spider-Man 2. When you get it, put it on here ASAP.

GuestGeez, when I was in band/orchestra I remember playing that particular arrangement of America the Beautiful to death. First on a European tour, then at a September 11 benefit concert ($30,000 to the Red Cross . . . woohoo), and then at every single honor band or orchestra I made.
I hate that piece.

GuestI echo your sentiments, Infynitie. Maybe it’s a double reed thing? Lol.
