Guest… I hope gmmm isn’t some sort of dirty word …

GuestWell, Elfman’s sound is quite unique. There are not a lot of film composer’s with that sound, not to say they aren’t trying to duplicate it. Sound’s like you might enjoy original sounding music. I might try listening to some Phillip Glass(Candyman/Songs of Liquid Days) or John Adams(Short Ride in a Fast Machine/Nixon in China). You might also find Witold Lutoslawski’s late period music interesting as well. There are many great books available to the subject of modern music as well as web sites. The best thing is to just go out and explore what is available to the listening ears. Like to hear that music makes people go gmmm. I shall request that instead of a “Bravo!”.

GuestQuick tangential question…
Where the hell can you get a copy of Glass’ “Candyman” score?!
Thanks.

GuestCANDYMAN and CANDYMAN II are available on a single disc from Orange Mountain Music — a label dedicated to releasing Glass’ music (which I quite like BTW). The disc is available at Amazon.com.
I reviewed the CANDYMAN disc at Cinemusic.

GuestOr you could just download an mp3 and put it on loop for an hour. It would be the same damn thing.

GuestI have never heard anything in my entire life that sounded like it would be spelled “gmm” nor have I ever read anything that had “gmm” in it. Therefore, I am unable to help you. Sorry.

GuestWow, finally someone else that shares that opinion with me… I totally agree, music is music; there’s no such thing as a crappy genre, just crappy musicians within that genre. There’s great hip-hop and there’s terrible hip-hop, great bluegrass and awful bluegrass, great classical and terrible classical, and so on and so on.
