ParticipantI don’t know if anyone listed this yet, but I just checked the Carnegie website, and Elfman’s piece there will be called “Schizophrenic’s Serenade”….I CAN’T WAIT!

Participant“novel . . . spatial orientations of musicians” . . .
WHAT?????
(“Hey, I’ve got this really awesome idea . . . let’s switch the tuba with the timpani! It’ll totally blow people’s minds, dude!”)

ParticipantWhere did you read that?
(There’s a lot that can be achieved by the placement of the musicians btw, no need to be sarcastic.)January 8, 2005 at 5:15 am #53119Dark_Conformist
ParticipantOh my god. That is so awesome! I didn’t think it possible but I love him even more! ^.^

When I saw Elfman speak at the LA Film Fest in June, he spoke a bit about this. It’s something that he’s really been interested in over the last few years, especially with his action scores. He said that he sometimes likes to split the string section up and line the basses against the back wall. The effect, he said, is that it sounds more like the orchestra is hitting you head-on when you listen to the recording. Thomas Newman seemed intrigued when he said this and asked if that worked. Elfman smiled and said that sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t! I know that Elfman is also very particular (as most composers are) about which stage he records each score at, knowing that the space above the orchestra and the accoustics are vitally important to the overall feel of the recording. I’ve not really been that taken with the recording quality of the two scores he’s done in London in recent years (SLEEPY HOLLOW and BIG FISH) and I attribute that to the fact that he knows the LA scoring stage scene much better. I think the sound and mixing on HULK is just remarkable. SPIDER-MAN 2 sounds good (certainly better than the crummy sound quality on the original SPIDER-MAN), but HULK just floors me each time I listen to it.

GuestForgive me if this was already discussed, but is Danny actually going to be there?, or is it just a piece he wrote being performed. I’d love to go to this, any more information on this would be appreciated.

ParticipantHe has to be there. How’s he going to hear it performed if he isn’t? By the way, anyone have news of a cd release yet?

ParticipantI can understand moving things around for acoustic effects . . . I had just gotten the impression from the article that the “spatial orientation” would be visual.

Participantyou can get all the info you need on Carnegie Hall’s website search for American Composers Orchestra.
I wonder if he’ll be there…I would suspect yes as most of the time composers show up for the World Premiere, and especially since this is Danny’s first commission for the concert hall.
There are still tix available, I can’t wait. - AuthorPosts
