ParticipantWell now, Danny Elfman may have been snubbed at the Golden Globes last year, but he certainly left his mark this year! As Teri Hatcher went up to accept her award for Desperate Housewives, the theme was played by a full orchestra! Better yet, Teri Hatcher said, “Wow, that’s our theme! I’ve never heard it played that way!” That made me happy.
Now, as I write this, Howard Shore is up to accept yet another award. Fortunately I’ve learned to accept that he’s a great composer and a buddy of Danny Elfman, I think. Good for him.

KeymasterHoward Shore liked Elfman’s SPIDER-MAN 2 when I played it for him. So, in some ways, he is a buddy.

ParticipantAre YOU a buddy of Howard Shore? I mean, as moderator of the Filmmusic sites, do you get to chill with a bunch of cool composers?

ParticipantWhen YOU played it for him? Spill Ryan, Spill!!
And yeah, I loved hearing the theme played live. It sounded great.

Participantyeah shore deserved his oscar. really love the score for the aviator
shore is a great replacement for goldsmithand it really makes me happy to know that shore and elfman are friends
probably the only friend elfman has since every other composer seems to hate himJanuary 17, 2005 at 10:03 pm #53184Spider-Fan
ParticipantI think Danny’s pretty tight with Thomas Newman. I doubt that he mingles too often with some of the more classic composers, as he seems like more of a party animal with a different style. Besides, there’s much to envy out of Danny Elfman, him being such a great composer and all.

ParticipantDoes anyone else think that Shore got the Golden Globe simply because the movie that he scored music for was The Aviator?
…probably the only friend elfman has since every other composer seems to hate him…
Blah, rubbish. No proof.

ParticipantThough I haven’t heard much of it, the bits I’ve heard from the Aviator score are pretty good. And damned if Clint Eastwood is gonna go and win a Golden Globe for best score. I don’t think 2004 was much of an achievement year for film scores, and Shore’s Aviator probably best deserved the award.

ParticipantI thought there were plenty of good scores in ’04. I wasn’t that crazy about SM2, but the Aviator is good, and for action/bombast Skycaptain was interesting. Neverland was quite nice…It just seemed like a year for smaller names, although I did love Williams’ Azkaban.
January 18, 2005 at 10:18 pm #53197mike
Participanti suspect the reason why that ottman hates him is because elfman’s more talented even though he never had any scoring training
January 18, 2005 at 10:19 pm #53198mike
Participantactually yes there is lots of proof
if you do a google search for “danny elfman interviews” you’ll realize he attacks those composers and says “oh fuck them, i don’t give a fuck about them”January 18, 2005 at 10:25 pm #53199mike
Participant“azkaban” was amazing. “buckbeak’s flight” is one of my favorite movie score of all time
love the dreamlike score that williams plays when harry sees his reflection in the water. just beautifulJanuary 18, 2005 at 10:28 pm #53200mike
Participanti thought “azkaban” was superior than “aviator”

ParticipantAnd damned if Clint Eastwood is gonna go and win a Golden Globe for best score.
Agreed.
…and Shore’s Aviator probably best deserved the award.
Out of the nominations they gave, perhaps, but do you think — on a similar note — that Danny Elfman got an Oscar nomination in ’97 because the academy loved the music to Goodwill Hunting, or because Danny Elfman scored music for that particular film? It’s so political, those award shows. I blame the Stonecutters. (He-he)
Really. Do audiences and listeners actually believe that The Aviator is the best score of the year?
Spider-Man 2 destroys The Aviator, by comparison.
Spider-Man 2 has smartly-constructed thematic material and variations. It has great muscular power, and sweet tenderness. Spider-Man is so lively, so agile, so inflecting.
Yes, The Aviator score was indeed lovely during the flight sequences, and had completely apt, and intelligent, Herrmann-esque spotting, but — and not to take away anything from Mr. Shore — it was so average.
There were/are so many other richly-deserved film scores to award, like:
Bad Education
Les Choristes
Spider-Man 2
Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban…if you do a google search for “danny elfman interviews” you’ll realize he attacks those composers…
What composers? Who?
January 19, 2005 at 5:48 pm #53207mike
Participantthat’t the problem he dosen’t mention who but he does say it
January 19, 2005 at 9:24 pm #53215Spider-Fan
ParticipantOf course I thought that Spider-Man 2 had the best score this year…look at my username! But you are right, the organizations will base their opinions on every aspect of a movie on how they liked it overall. Frankly, Good Will Hunting is very average compared to Danny’s other work, but the Academy loved that it was for Good Will Hunting.
Spider-Man 2 will not likely be recognized for any awards primarily because the movie contained recycled music and music from other composers. That REALLY sucks because the music that Danny wrote, whether or not in the movie, is absolutely outstanding. Thematic, powerful, appropriate, it’s truly a great score. I guess Sony can take the blame for this and apologize by pumping a huge budget in music for Spider-Man 3, which Danny has to score.
January 19, 2005 at 11:34 pm #53217Mr. Dantz
ParticipantNot other composers, mike. Just his critics. And most often, critics can’t write music worth shit.
January 20, 2005 at 2:44 pm #53232mike
Participantdon’t know what their beef is
just because he didn’t go a film scoring school they brand him a failuretarantino never went to filmmaking school and yet he’s one of the best we have
January 20, 2005 at 2:51 pm #53233mike
Participanti don’t think elfman will be doing spiderman 3
didn’t you hear what happened with spiderman 2January 21, 2005 at 2:35 am #53259Spider-Fan
ParticipantAs far as I’ve heard about the next movie, Danny’s interested in returning.
January 21, 2005 at 6:25 am #53263Mr. Dantz
ParticipantWith all the money he’s raking in with those movies, I bet he is!
January 21, 2005 at 4:50 pm #53266mike
Participantbut i don’t the decesion is up to him though
Sony pictures is the one that’ll make the final choice on the composer not raimi
and since elfman told em to “fuck off” i don’t think they’ll bring him backthey’ll probably get john ottman to do it, since he seems to be the new superhero composer
January 21, 2005 at 4:55 pm #53273mike
Participantlike i said it’s not up to him
January 21, 2005 at 5:00 pm #53276Spider-Fan
ParticipantIf Danny were not to return, they’d get John Debney or Chris Young, people they know can work with Spidey. In an effort to keep the movies connected, I would think they’d be on their knees and kissing Danny’s feet for him to come back.
January 21, 2005 at 5:11 pm #53277mike
Participanti’d do the same if i were them to
but maybe danny will be mad because of the way they treated his score?
whatever the case i still think he won’t be backi hope they get john debney. really loved his version of “special delivery”
