Check out what this complete “purist” HACK over at Amazon.com had to say about Danny’s work.

This album sucks. How can you replace the masterful and perfectly composed songs written by Bricusse and Newley (from the original)with this garbage?
I can understand if the composer wanted to update the score to fit modern times, but totally scrapping a piece of musical perfection for the sake of making a buck is idiocy. From listening to it, it seems like there are only 5 actual musical numbers–all of which are abominations of sound. Give me “Pure Imagination” and “I Want it Now!”, not stupid, factory-made, garden variety songs named after the characters they represent (supposedly).
Simply awful. I was excited for this movie, but after listening to how they decimated the score, I’m having serious second thoughts.
Garbage like this, even in candy wrapping, still reeks.

Supposedly? Obviously this guy is a retard. If he actually had the CD, he would know that Elfman’s songs are named after the kids the represent. He makes it sound like he doesn’t even know who the characters are.

July 16, 2005 at 4:41 pm #54570Ryan KeaveneyKeymasterI think he’s confusing this as a remake of WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, not a new movie adaptation of the book CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Why would they carryover the insipid songs?

Musical prefection? Three words: Cheer up, Charlie. And what does he mean scrapping the original songs is just for the sake of making a buke? Using the original songs and not taking the time to write new ones would be for the sake of making a buck.
July 16, 2005 at 6:17 pm #54572Spider-FanParticipantDanny Elfman took excerpts from the songs written by Dahl himself and made them into amazing, diverse musical numbers. And sang every word and background voice himself, to boot! Sure, the songs in “Willy Wonka” are classic, but they’re dated and, like previously mentioned, why re-use them? The songs Danny wrote were amazing, as were his vocals. One question though, in “Veruca Salt,” it sounds like there is a female voice singing the ABBA-esque song, was that Danny too?! I’m still amazed by all of the layering and voice alteration he did!

This guy seems to be under the impression that the ’71 version songs are the original songs, and it was wrong to tamper with them. I’d put substantial money on that guy having never read the book, let alone knowing that the lyrics to the Elfman tunes were penned by Dahl himself, and that in its original form, it was *not* a musical, and therefore, you shouldn’t pass it off just because it doesn’t have the happy-go-lucky commercialised song versions the first movie had. It’s a pretty well-known fact among his fans that Dahl detested the ’71 version for that reason exactly.
July 17, 2005 at 4:02 am #54581Mr. DantzParticipantYou don’t criticize Elfman simply because he is God.
Seriously, though, whatever … People have their own opinions, no matter how WRONG they may be.
