GuestMy brother’s copy of Blender still comes to my house, even though he dosen’t live with me anymore; and in this month’s issue is an article titled “The 50 Worst Bands”…
Oingo Boingo made the list at # 16 !!!
I guess they have finally arrived then. How cool (or uncool) is that?!

They also listed their worst album as “Only A Lad”.
Another band I listen to actually made it to # 2… ELP !!!!
All this from a magazine that sports the lead singer of Radiohead on the cover with “GENIUS!” written in large type.

I’m glad a lot of my tasts are a little left of center, and this article just helps to validate that (as if I needed it)!

Nat (LOL)
FYI.
ICP was the # 1 worst band (according to Blender that is).August 13, 2003 at 6:52 am #46191Anonymous
GuestThat’s bullshit. There are a lot of rock band that can’t reach the melodic creativity of Oingo Boingo. And i don’t speak about their lyrics…most of rock band’s lyrics are just pointless while Danny developped his own universe.
But well, a major part of their music sounded really 80’s, and now everybody makes fun of the 80’s. Today, you have to say “Radiohead are gods” and for some people, it’s the only to conceive rock music. Don’t misunderstand me : l really like Radiohead ! But there are not the only one to make good music and rock music didn’t start with them.Speaking of OB : can someone tell me more about the song “i’m afraid” ? I just discovered it and i don’t know anything about it.

Guest“I’m Afraid” was recorded around 1979 I think – right around when the Mystic Knights became Oingo Boingo – and appeared on an anthology album with material by other bands, called “L.A. In”.
The fast section in the middle of the song shows also shows up as an instrumental in the Forbidden Zone score.

GuestThere are only 2 things in the 80’s that where good:
Oingo Boingo and Metallica (even though I really don’t like Metallica’s new stuff).
There is only ONE good thing that CAME OUT OF the 80’s, and that is Mr. Elfman.

Guestand Depeche Mode….and The Cure (well, 70/80)….and etc
August 13, 2003 at 5:23 pm #46196Anonymous
GuestHey, I liked the 80s! I guess because I grew up during them… They weren’t nearly as cheesy as the 70s** ….. (LOL LMAO)
Anyway, who cares what “they” say. I’ve always counted their (Boingo’s) music among my favorites, but back then, their underground status (at a time when radio was dominated by God-awful “top-40” music) was part of their alure, I guess.
I’ve read a few issues of Blender. Could IT be one of the 10 worst magazines of all time? They should rename “Blender” as “Toilet,” because that’s where I’m gonna flush the next copy of it that I see….
** I know I’ll catch hell for saying that…

Guest“There are only 2 things in the 80’s that where good:

i’ll pretend you didnt say that

i actually have a book that lists oingo boingo as one of the top 10 80’s bands with cool names. i think kajjagoogoo was #1
and in regards to the original post, you do have to give the mag credit for even recognizing boingo in the first place, even if it is in a top ten worst list (although i do agree with ICP being #1 hehehe)
…and i remember the days when KROQ used to do those best 100 bands lists and boingo would be somewere in the top 20. i dont think KROQ plays boingo anymore
August 13, 2003 at 10:01 pm #46200Anonymous
GuestKROQ still plays Boingo….about every few months! XP They’ve got this thing called “Request Flashback Lunch” from 12-1 p.m. where they play requests for “older” stuff – “older” meaning 80’s and 90’s (at least to them apparently). I personally don’t think of songs from 1997 as qualifying as “flashbacks”, but I guess that “flashback” now means “whatever we would never play again unless listeners request it”. But they still do the Top 106.7 bands. Last year Boingo was #30, but I remember they were #8 a few years back. I think they’re going to do it again on Memorial Day, so we’ll see how they rank this year.
As for the Worst Bands list, they can f*** off. Music critics don’t have the final say of what’s good or not, and I don’t trust critics anyway. They think because they get paid to give their opinions that it makes them “experts”. Their views of quality are no more valid than mine or anyone else’s.
AND I LIKE ONLY A LAD, DAMMIT!!!
And for Jack Torrence, there was vinyl copy of I’m Afraid up for auction on Ebay a while ago, starting at $24. It’s not up now, but I’ve seen it more than once, so you may want to check there every now and then just in case.

GuestOther bands / people on the Blender list that I listen to:
# 42 Rick Wakeman (I own the album “Journey to the Centre of The Earth”
# 21 The Alan Parsons Project
# 14 Yngwie Malmsteen
And I loved the 80s. Some of my favorite scores came from the 80’s along with some of my favorite movies. You could count on an 80s movie to at least be fun. Now when there is a bad movie, it’s not fun, it’s just pretentious. Give me “REAL GENIUS” over Radiohead any day of the week.

You make me sad, Knight

GuestIT WAS A JOKE!
I guess a bad one too. There where alot of things I liked about the 80’s and alot of things I didn’t (Boy George anyone?). But hey, what can you do?
Knight (Not to mention all the pastel colours that where in style…BAH!)
August 14, 2003 at 6:14 am #46206Anonymous
GuestTee-hee. I like liking things that no one else does–society’s loss, by far! At the same time, though, it’s scary to think of the stuff other people do listen too….
August 14, 2003 at 7:54 am #46207Anonymous
GuestYou like pastel colours and Biy George Evil Dead? Or where you talking about Boingo? lol
Knight (Do waht you want, not what society wants you to do)

GuestYeech. Now that’s a bad joke! The only thing worse than pastels and Boy George, is Boy George in pastels. (Not to offend Boy George fans–all two of you, who may, by chance venture upon this site–disturbing as that may sound)….

GuestI thought I would post the whole listing for Oingo Boingo in that Blender Article for everyone to read…
“16
Oingo Boingo
Artless art-rock
Oingo Boingo singer Danny Elfman went on to become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand soundtrack composers. But during his first go-round, he and his movie-director brother led this ostentatiously orchestrated L.A. New Wave group that began its pretentious career, not surprisingly, as a performance-art troupe.
Worst CD: Only a Lad (A&M, 1981)”Yanni follows Oingo Boingo on the list at # 15.

GuestKnew it was a joke, but everyone loves fashion-conscious pastel colors…or something
August 16, 2003 at 4:04 am #46218Anonymous
GuestHey, I said “not to offend any Boy George fans….” (But it’s not something I’d go around admitting in public). And, if you like pastels, well….I’m not saying anything. (I’ll go shudder in the corner instead).
August 16, 2003 at 5:25 am #46219Anonymous
GuestActually, I was joking.
I don’t even know who Boy George is!And no, I don’t like pastel colors.

GuestThe next best thing to come out of the 80s: rampant profusion of eccentrically patterned Chuck Taylors

-E (who still holds that Chucks are the greatest shoes in existence)
August 16, 2003 at 7:58 am #46221Anonymous
GuestWe used to paint and marker our Taylors back in High School. Damn fine shoes I might add, but didn’t Nike (or another big shoe company?) just aquire the Converse company?
Nat
August 16, 2003 at 12:08 pm #46222Anonymous
GuestN –
Correct. Nike acquired Converse when the latter company went bankrupt. (At least that was my understanding 6 months ago. Hopefully things haven’t changed too dramatically since then…) It’s a shame, too, because the shoes are no longer made in the USA. Sweatshop labor, my friends. (The McDonald’s approach permeates everything from The Gap to shoes now. Read “Fast Food Nation” by Eric Schlosser and you’ll really see the connection.)
I used pen and permanent marker on my Chucks back in junior high. Many hours of algebra were spent putting the “finishing touches” on my white-and-checkerboard pair

Worst CD: Only a Lad (A&M, 1981)”Ah, well that sure tells me why Oingo Boingo is so horrible. Thank you, Blender!
Danny Elfman wrote something for Only a Lad in retaliation to such journalistic tripe:
>>You never lived in the streets though you wish you had
Not enough talent to play a guitar
You failed as an artist ’cause you lacked in the confidence
Now you’re a critic and you’re at the top(The top of what)<< >>You’re just a critic, we know why you drink so much
Jealousy slowly consuming your gut
The streets that you never knew are just where they’ve always been
Your head is firmly lodged way up your butt<< - AuthorPosts
