GuestHey! I watched the movie a couple of days ago, and thought it was pretty good overall, but I really loved the soundtrack. Especially the Elfmanesque opening credits. Anyone here watch the movie? The critics bashed it to hell, but I really enjoyed it.

GuestLoved the movie, can’t wait to get paid again so I can love the score.

Not as good as Unbreakable, but Signs is on par with The Sixth Sense in my opinion.

GuestTotally agree, loved it. Opening credits reminded me a bit of the old Psycho main titles, don’t know why. Anyway, took my kid sisters and brother to see it so they could get the crap scared out of them. It worked

GuestWell, I don’t know. I really liked the Sixth Sense better. Unbreakable was really good, but the whole “I’m the villian, and you’re the hero like in the comic books” kinda’ seemed silly to me. Signs just gave you a “good feeling” while watching it. . . if that makes any sense.

GuestJust saw it this evening. I wasn’t a fan of it, just because in my opinion, it was essentially a slapping together of main themes in “Contact,” as well as a bit of “Independence Day” action from Joaquin Phoenix in the end. I mean, it wasn’t all that hard to figure out, in my opinion…but that’s just my opinion
Glad to know that there are others who thought the main titles sequences sounded a lot like “Psycho.” (Actually, the whole score reminded me of Herrmann’s work in the Hitchcock/Janet Leigh film…) Quite frankly, though, I think Shayamalan (sp?) would have to come up with something of epic proportions to top “The Sixth Sense.” My favorite horror/suspense film will probably be “The Others” for quite a long time (and I absolutely adore the score as well).August 13, 2002 at 10:51 am #41293Anonymous
GuestThis makes me think about Dolores CLaiborne, in Howard’s string techniques. It’s also VERY western European (piano and woodwinds tell us that).
But there is also a bit of an ethnic and new age touch in some segments.

Guestyeah….that Shaymalanadingdong can’t seem to top himself…although i’d venture to say The Others had a more interesting twist at the end than Sixth Sense. And the fact that Unbreakable passed through the public like a fart in the wind is no mystery to me, either; I think that qualifies it to be an even BETTER ghost story, even though it’s about comic book superheroes, if you catch my drift. hahaha.
At least James Newton Howard manages to write some good music for his stuff.August 13, 2002 at 11:50 am #41296Anonymous
GuestI really enjoyed watching this movie! Joaquin Phoenix and the kids were great. The film had some extremely scary moments. I liked the score, it’s amongst James Newton Howard’s best works; I especially liked how the picture was spotted – the music shows up in very unusual places where one wouldn’t expect to hear filmmusic (for example when Joaquin Phoenix is talking to SFC Cunningham in his office). But in my opinion, Signs had two major flaws:
a) M. Night Shyamalan shouldn’t try to act.
b) The ending was terrible (Mel Gibson’s caracter regaining his faith and stuff).August 13, 2002 at 12:39 pm #41297Anonymous
GuestI personally thought the score was rediculous. I saw the movie opening night and maybe it was because it was late and I was sleep deprived, but about 10 seconds into the end credits I was laughing uncontrollably and people were staring. I thought it was one of the dumbest things I’d heard.
Dobbs – – you know that somebody else wrote and directed The Others, right?

GuestWhoops . . . I meant opening credits. My bad . . . that was early in the morning when I posted :-p

GuestThe only SIGNS in the moviehouse I was interested in, were the ones labled ‘Exit’ – near the end of the row to the left and right of the screen. Howard’s music, the script, everything was so dull – completely lacking of any style. Is M. Night Shamalan’s only idea of conveying suspense,is switching to long angled lenses?!
I hated the cheesey X-FILES-like piano theme that re-occured, and just when I though the movie was going to end up like NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (i.e the boarding up of the house) it goes nowhere – SLOWLY!
Now, THE OTHERS was much better. A great moody, atmospheric film with real class and artistic integrity. It reminded me of some Mario Bava movies, like LISA AND THE DEVIL, KILL BABY KILL or BLACK SUNDAY.

GuestThe Others was an M. Night movie? I didn’t know that. . .
August 13, 2002 at 7:44 pm #41305Anonymous
GuestNo, M Knight did not do THE OTHERS. It was a spanish director, whose name I can’t recall. He did the original VANILLA SKY, entitled OPEN YOUR EYES.

GuestAlejandro Amenabar was his name and the score to The Others was one of the best from last year (also composed by the director!).
I have to say that I haven’t seen SIGNS yet but I want to. I’ve got the score and I love the last couple of cues. I think I might be the only person on Earth that didn’t like THE SIXTH SENCE, but did like UNBREAKABLE, so go figure.
I almost fell asleep when I saw THE SIXTH SENCE in theaters but UNBREAKABLE held my attention when I first saw it on DVD. I think the reasons for that is because I saw the ending of TSS coming and that I knew what type of movie it was right off the bat, but UNBREAKABLE held my attention even when I figured it out.
To each his own.

GuestHey Infynity —- That was my point. I knew it was a different director! Actually, i got off the Shyamalanana wagon after Unbreakable….Not because he sucks, but for personal reaons. Besides, I haven’t been into the whole serious “Aliens are coming” thing — at least not since ID4 was the flavor of the year. I only take Men In Black and Mars Attacks because of the fact that they’re tongue in cheek, and the obvious Elfman involvement. Aliens among us? Big deal — in Miami EVERYONE’S a god damn alien. I could care less about Mel Gibson finding one in a corn field…You wanna see some really alien crap? Check out the tricked out Honda CRXs with the blaring Slasa music…You’d swear you were on another planet.
I have to admit, though that Amenabar did a pretty slick job of outdoing Shamylanlan’s ghost story. it seemed pretty damn tough that anyone could beat it.
And one last thing —
and i don’t think im alone here:XXX star Vin Diesel aka Mark Vincent is NOT an actor. He is a moron. The fact that he keeps mentioning his big breakthrough (thanks to Spielberg’s “Ryan”) as reference is proof enough. I hate this guy, for some damn reason.

GuestHe can’t be all bad, he was the voice of the IRON GIANT – one of the best animated films in the last couple of years (even though he didn’t speak much). I also like him in Pitch Black, which was far superior to some of the larger budgeted sci-films of late (oh yea, and it had Claudia Black who stars on my favorite show FARSCAPE). But I’ve gotten on a rant so I guess it’s time for me to crawl back into my hole.

GuestI’ll agree with Dobbs on the disliking of Vin Diesel (whatever the heck his “real” name is, I don’t care enough to type it in). He reminds me of all those moronic football players who made my non-life in high school even more of a living hell…and he stars, and is marketed heavily, in movies commonly reported as “the best ever” (no, usually their support is voiced in some sort of expletive phrase starting with f, and ending with “awesome”) by those same moronic football players. When the gigantic billboards proclaiming his new movie came out, at first, I thought it was some sort of massive ad campaign for a new type of alcohol…and now that I know it’s a movie, they irritate me even more! I mean, really, billboards, on the interstate no less, to promote a movie?! Ridiculous. (And yes, that was a rant of semi-epic proportions). *Note: I don’t dislike all football players, just the moronic ones…and well, I’d better stop while I’m ahead.

GuestI think it would surprise most people that Vin Diesel actually got his start as a Writer, Producer, and Director of the Indy short film Multi-Facial (1994) and the full length Strays (1997). Sure he acted in them, but he should not be held in contempt for taking the money and running when he had the chance. With this new found popularity you might be surprised when he starts to write again.
In the handful of interviews I’ve seen of him, he seems to be a grounded person (despite his mom being an astrologer) and closer to us than you might think.
Anyone who creates is not “moronic” in my book, and I think you of all people Erika would judge a person by how people react to his movies, and not the person themselves.
Sorry, but I don’t find anything threatening about this guy – except that he looks like a shaved Lou Forigno
.Nat, who went to xXx and actually liked it dispite the non-believability of all the action (it IS a movie after all).

GuestYou actually looked up Vin Gasoline’s profile? he’s our future Van Damme…no more, no less. That seems to be the route he chose..he wants to make the action pictures and “get all the girls.” If he wrote some stuff…then hey, no problem. I can dig it. But that’s notwithstanding compared to the fact that he’s a no-brainer action hero with no range whatsoever. He stands around looking constipated and acting like he just walked in from a street fight. Matt Dillon supercedes his rank — but not by much. I think the lines of creativity are getting as blurred as pretty much everything else with the advent of a PC culture. Hey i think the guy sucks…i’m not the only one. But if you guys like him — fine with me. The only picture i gave him credit for was Ryan, and as you can tell, he served his purpose well being the @!#$ grunt who gets popped early on in the film for doing something humane and tender — is Spielberg trying to tell us something?

GuestNat –
All right, I stand corrected. With as much as I’ve preached about not judging others, I realize that was a very immature and unfounded rant (but it was very vindicating for me). And no, I shouldn’t base my opinion of people on appearances. I was bad; please don’t beat me. Thanks for the info on the guy aka “Vin Diesel.” Although I really do not care for his “acting,” I do respect the fact that he does take a part in the actual production of movies. So, although I still do not like him as an actor – and I haven’t watched the films he’s written/directed/produced, so I have no opinion on those – I can respect the fact that he does take a much more active role in films that I had previously thought.

Note: I did not say he “IS” a moronic football player, but only said that he “REMINDS” me of them…they don’t mean the same thing…but alas, I”m digging up minor technicalities in an effort to justify my post

Guestaw man…don’t be so diplomatic…if you dont like someone, then you don’t like someone. Nothing wrong with that. We can all think that we’re being judgemental by saying crap like that, but judgements only count in three areas – popular opinion, the courts and God. One person’s opinion doesn’t mean a whole lot in this world, unless you got alot of clout or money to throw around, or your behind the law. But i guess there’s that whole way of being decent where if you can’t say something nice about someone, then don’t say anything at all…
One interesting thought about judgements that just donned on me — sure, criticism or judgements with a negative context no one wants to hear, but oh, start handing out GOOD judgements (compliments) and people eat THOSE types up, don’t they? Sounds like a double standard to me.
Anyway, Vin Diesel sucks, in my opinion. lolAugust 19, 2002 at 11:12 pm #41388Anonymous
GuestAnd like you said “One person’s opinion doesn’t mean a whole lot in this world.”

But I have to say, whether right or wrong in my mind, I value a lot of people’s opinions in life and on this board so in a way, in my world, it means a lot to me. And if you believe in the teaching of many learned men then you would see that the “self” or “me” is the center of all consciousness and thus the most important. Because, how can you see with someone else’s eyes, or “be” someone else? So the center of “your” world is you, and every thing that affects you affects “your” world (the only one you know).
Just an observation.

GuestThat’s why people usually come to the conclusion that they don’t give a flying (BEEEP) what anyone thinks of them. it’s not as simple an alligator suit to put on…Ruining one’s rep is like a national pasttime, because opinion turns into fact when you get enough people saying the same thing. This world is truly funny and has nothing better to do.
