GuestDobbs –
Why should I have to explain my reason for being “diplomatic” to you, anyway? I was slightly off-target in my assumption of this “Vin Diesel” guy, I realized that, and corrected it. Let’s put it this way: if I hadn’t, I would’ve been completely ignoring my principle of “correcting mistakes and owning up to them.” I live by principles – yeah, a bit old fashioned, but I don’t care – and completely ignoring one of them would have irritated me until I paid attention to the transgression. My being “diplomatic” was for myself and nobody else. Trust me, if I don’t like someone, am convinced of my reasoning for not liking them, it makes no difference what anybody else says…my opinion will stand because I have adequate reasoning for it. If I find out that I do not have adequate reasoning for it, I’ll correct my opinion to fit the new scheme…for myself alone. I”m “diplomatic” to the point that it suits me. Enough said.

GuestNevermind Erika. I don’t like him. It’s the same thing as saying i don’t like people at intersections who argue with you about giving them change. I just don’t like what they do, but now i’m being pc and trying not to offend anyone. My point is it’s interesting how the language has tuned into this — make a statement and explain yourself — thing. It’s like everyone’s on trial…

GuestYeah, it’s irritating me as well. Tired of getting out the torch and pitchfork, eh? Hm…who’s going to take people to task, then? Have you named your successor yet?
All in good fun,

GuestAnybody else think that the beginning of “Capitalism” sounds like cheesy porn music? (Ahem, whoops, I mean…not that I would know or anything *grins*)…

GuestNot a fan of Vin Diesel, but did see XXX (one of my friends has a lust factor going on–gross, I know), but I will thoroughly embarass myself and state that I do love Rammstein….
Now, for a little bit back on topic (sorry, I’m a bit slow–in more ways than one)! Signs is a very saucy movie–maybe not as good as The Sixth Sense, but better than Unbreakable. I’m a big fan of M. Night Shyamalan (second only to Tim and Sam), and I love his style of filming.
But what I most notice in his use of music, is the lack of. I mean, it’s usually not out there as say a Danny score would be in a Tim Burton film, but it works. (And I know that Shyamalan isn’t the composer, but he does have some control over the music, and for the time being I can’t remember the composer–although I do think it’s James Howard–sorry if it’s not!)
The opening sequence was by far the best–and I love how the names fly onto the screen; everything just fits so well together. I don’t think the score would work well on its own, though. I’d say you would have to hear it with the movie to get the full impact–but it was great.
And granted I can see how some people would think it’s cheesy–my friend did, but hey, she made me see XXX–but I for one enjoyed every second of it, and I’m not even a Mel Gibson fan.
And I really respect Shyamalan’s strong writing–it strikes me as consistant. I mean, yeah, a movie like Sixth Sense comes along once in a lifetime, but I still enjoy the sense of intimacy and plot regulated throughout his other films.
Everything’s really quiet and low key, and not too many people do that anymore; directors are usually too busy relying on special effects and big booms than actually piecing together a good story.
So yeah, I liked the movie. And I like what Shyamalan’s been doing. (I’d say his only fault is he hasn’t hit Danny up to do a score)! I look forward to his next movie–whatever it may be….
