ParticipantThe Oscar nominations have been posted (http://movies.yahoo.com/movies/feature/osc_03nominees.html) and again, there’s no Danny Elfman. I wasn’t really expecting it, anyway, I suppose, but I’m always surprised at some of the other garbage that gets credit.
Personally, I’m really pulling for Finding Neverland to win Bst Score. It’s the only soundtrack I’ve bought the past year and been fully satisfied by, and If you like the Edward Scissorhands-esque choir and piano, I strongly reccommend a purchase.

ParticipantI like the village score. I think it should win. And I would hardly call any of those nominations “garbage”.

ParticipantDid anyone see the movie or hear the score to the passion.
As controvertial (can’t spell) as it was, i think it could win.

ParticipantI’m with FFC. I liked the Passion score above the others (though I never heard the score for Finding Neverland). I’m surprised that The Village got the Academy’s attention, because James Newton Howard has composed many better scores (Dinosaur deserved recognition). Thomas Newman has never thrilled me, and I wasn’t absolutely thrilled with the Lemony Snicket score, but I think it’s the best he’s done so far. John Williams’s Prisoner of Azkaban score was my least favorite of the films that he scored, though he will be missed on the next one. I’m going with Debney’s Passion on this one, though I’m not sure how the Academy will like it. I loved the powerful percussion/chorus/ethnic sections, but some parts were directly copied from Horner’s “Glory.” I really wish that Spider-Man 2 hadn’t been rejected, but that was Danny’s only score this year, and after all Debney did work on it, so GO JOHN DEBNEY!

KeymasterThe GLORY connection is something I don’t agree with.
Horner’s “Burning The Town of Darien” from GLORY specifically qoutes Ralph (my favorite classical composer – I strongly urge everyone to explore his music!!) Vaughn Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis”. That theme in GLORY appears only once — in that single cue.
It is the Vaughn Williams piece which I think Debney is also qouting. Afterall, listening to “Fantasia” it’s easy to evoke the complicated emotions of the Crucifixion.
Just to show how prepared I am, below is a clip (the piece runs almost 16 minutes in length — this is a snippet of two excerpts) from the Vaughn Williams piece to show you just where Horner got his idea!
“Fantastia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” (Excerpt)
I’d believe that before believing that GLORY was on the temp track.

ParticipantEhhhhhh, it sounds somewhat like Debney’s, but not as much as Debney’s sounds like Glory. My citation: compare 3:30 to 4:15 of Crucifixion to 1:00 to 1:20 of the Closing Credits from Glory. Nearly the same. Nonetheless, I loves the rest of the Passion score and I hope it wins.

KeymasterI’m not saying that Debney wrote a note for note, but what I am saying is it’s more likely that he was inspired by this very famous classical work than he was GLORY, a civil war drama that features only one reference to this particular motif and a score that was very unlikely on the PASSION temp track. It’s a widely regarded opinion that Horner lifted from RVW’s Tallis piece, not just my private theory.

ParticipantPersonally, I would have liked to see Jon Brion added to the mix. I think it would have been a fresh move to see “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” nominated. I don’t expect that it would have won, but I love that soundtrack.
Also, Michael Giacchino’s “The Incredibles” was (he puts on his Gene Shalit moustache) ‘incredible’. Another favorite that was overlooked.

ParticipantEternal Sunshine did have some great music. The credits music is awesome. But it’s mostly ambient and there isn’t much of it throughout the entire movie.

ParticipantNonetheless, I loves the rest of the Passion score and I hope it wins.
Yikes. The Passion score gives me the creeps — and this coming from a guy who has the Twisted Nerve theme his cell phone ringer.

ParticipantI really liked Azkaban, especially after all the rehashing that went on for the second film. The Village I was good, but it’s too much like Phil Glass’ violin concerto. It’s hard to award unoriginality. The Passion didn’t do much for me, however I do like Finding Neverland. Eternal Sunshine has a great score, but I think Brion is too unorthodox for the Academy.
I particulary liked Alexanre Desplat’s score for Birth. - AuthorPosts
