Hm, 2:49 or so to the end of the Batman Theme sounds like an earlier incarnation of the piece, minuscule the changes may be. And that moron in the moronic sweater at 1:06 should be slapped. Yeah, I know John Williams had not written Schindler’s List yet, but he had written plenty of non-bombastic scores even by the time of this video!
Nick ParkerParticipantI would like to make some amendments. Upon listening to both right now, I am having troubles finding similarities between the two scores. Also, I think I am beginning to like The Kingdom, “Friendship” is very nice.
Nick ParkerParticipantLooking back at my earlier post, I realize that I did not address that. I have been recommended various Media Ventures scores from friends (“They sound epic!”), which ultimately led me to Black Hawk Down, and I seem to remember a similarity between the two.
Nick ParkerParticipantYou would be right in saying that I am ignorant of trends outside of film music, but to be honest, I do not even really follow trends in film music, I think it is boring for the most part. I listen only to orchestral music, and Danny Elfman happens to be one of the few that writes music that “has its own legs”, so to speak. So when I say that I dislike The Kingdom, I say it because I do not think it has its “own legs”, not to me, anyways. I would not doubt that it is a great film score, though.
Nick ParkerParticipantWould I be in the wrong Message Board if I said that I thought The Kingdom sounded like a Media Ventures score?
Nick ParkerParticipant(The reference was regarding a sarcastic post of yours, but that does not matter now) I really hope I am not coming off as aggressive, I have no reason to be angry at any of you guys.
Nick ParkerParticipantCannot stomach your own medicine?
“…Don’t make a concession either. It makes it sound too real if you do that… just sayin’ “
In other news, I cannot wait until I make enough money to buy this score….
Nick ParkerParticipantDo not make a concession, it only makes your comment seem all the more real!
Nick ParkerParticipantAm I the only tired of people calling Danny Elfman’s newer music “nonthematic”?
Nick ParkerParticipantYou are most likely right, especially if Ryan was right when he said Danny Elfman wrote about 140 minutes of music for Terminator: Salvation (did the film really need that much music?)
Nick ParkerParticipantAfter watching it, I agree with elfboy91. I just gave up trying to understand it and instead enjoyed the Beetlejuice and Nightbreed-esque music.
Nick ParkerParticipantDefinitely in a positive way. Basically, he was saying, “The film was great, but I think the best part about it was Danny Elfman’s music.” I thought that was really cool, and promising as well, you would expect a critic to say “Christian Bale’s performance” or “the special effects”, but the first thing to come to his mind was Danny Elfman.
Nick ParkerParticipantI just sat (suffered) through a G4 Preview of the film, and while they did not feature a segment with Danny Elfman as I hoped, one of the hosts said this about the score: “ got the chance to see [Terminator: Salvation] yesterday. I loved everything about it, but the one thing that stood out for me: Danny Elfman’s score. How he is still doing this after twenty-something years, I [stutter] just do not know.”
Nick ParkerParticipantActually, it unfortunately seems that when one says “Batman music”, people tend to think of the 1960’s theme….
Nick ParkerParticipantMan, I will be in school until 3:00! It better not sell out before then!
Nick ParkerParticipantNo need to apologize, we were just having a bit of fun (I certainly was).
Nick ParkerParticipant(Re-reading the list)
What is this!? Vertigo is below Chariots of Fire? Does anyone even remember anything outside of the “sappy” theme is supposed to somehow be inspiring!? This is madness!
Nick ParkerParticipantOh, the wonders of sarcasm…as an Italian-American, I can say with certainty that I never understood the recurring opinion that Americans are only capable of appreciating “mega-budget popcorn flicks”, “blockbuster fluff” and so on, and my post was intended as a satire of that foolish belief. That being said, there are still some very questionable entries in that list, in my opinion. The inclusion of scores like Gladiator and Toy Story seem to be more a testament of the films themselves rather than their scores (and even then, I would not include Gladiator). Just thought I would clarify.
Nick ParkerParticipantI totally agree. This list is yet more proof that Americans have no taste in music whatsoever (well, they do have taste, but it is very bad), and only the “foreigners” (Europeans, Asians, and so on) can truly critique art forms such as music and films.
Nick ParkerParticipantHow hard is it to make a “Deep Sea 3d Deux” or something like that? THERE ARE NO EXCUSES!
Nick ParkerParticipantTrust me, you are not the only one! I can never find an affordable copy of Black Beauty anywhere!
Nick ParkerParticipantAgreed. And Thor, last time I checked (last month), the score is not widely available, otherwise I would have owned it by now. That said, I am anticipating this release quite highly.
Nick ParkerParticipantHappy Birth-Day, Ryan!
