God, what a totally insipid cue.
ThorParticipantHere’s also my English-language article, for anyone interested:
http://montagesmagazine.com/2017/10/danny-elfman-brings-down-the-house-in-vienna/
9fingeredelf — I have the programme, but not a scan. I’ll see what I can do.
ThorParticipantAwkward Skype conference. But great with the Dumbo news!
ThorParticipantAnd here’s my 30-minute concert report, including interviews with Elfman, Robert Townson, John Mauceri and Sandra Tomek:
Celluloid Tunes # 52: Danny Elfman in Vienna (16th International Edition)
There’s a piece of exclusive news in it, but I’ll do a separate thread on that.
ThorParticipantWow, that sounds very different from what I saw on Friday, where he took his time on the red carpet, signed autographs etc. He was in a surprisingly good mood, and was also present for the first half of the concert (he seemed to like the FINAL FANTASY piece, in particular).
ThorParticipantLove the cake video. We considered crashing backstage after the concert (where I presume this happened), but we opted not to. I didn’t want to be a nuissance/fanboy, and I have to keep my relationship with Vienna going. Also a great video by you, boingomusic (you caught the tailend of my interview in the beginning there). I have no idea about right issues in relation to showing clips from the actual concert, but there are thousands of these videos on Youtube, so I don’t see why yours are any different. Should be safe?
Anyways, here’s a photo I just put out on Facebook from my red carpet session (only got about 2 minutes, but that will do for now):
ThorParticipantThat’s great to know, boingomusic! Looking forward to seeing your videos.
I’ll assemble my brief interview bits with Elfman, Mauceri, Robert Townson and Sandra Tomek in a new webcast episode pretty soon.
ThorParticipantBoingomusic, sorry to hear that you misread the date for the get-together. We missed you!
But if you were at the red carpet, we were standing almost next to each other without knowing. I was the first guy to interview him.
ThorParticipantTHE DANNY ELFMAN IN VIENNA GET-TOGETHER THREAD
Place: Gmoakeller (right next to the concert hall)
Where it is: http://tinyurl.com/qy23v4l
Information about the restaurant: http://www.gmoakeller.at/
Time: Thursday, September 28th, 16:00/4PM – 19:00/7PM. I’ll be there some minutes before to make sure everything’s OK. The concert begins 19:30/7:30PM
Participants:
Thor
Eirik (from Maintitles.net)
John Rokesmith
Kim
Svein Jarle
Boingomusic (from MFADP)ThorParticipantGreat, boingomusic! I’ll put you on the list, and get back to you with details. 🙂
ThorParticipantOK! I’m not sure yet if we’re doing the get-together before the first or second concert. I’ll be in Vienna both nights, but I’ll only attend one of them (not yet confirmed which). I could easily host the get-together before a concert I’m NOT attending. Just to let you know.
ThorParticipantSo Mark/Camillu — would you like to attend the get-together too?
ThorParticipantHe, he…
IF I get the interview, it will only be, like, 10 minutes (same as I got with Horner in 2013). So I need to ask some 4-5 questions that I can make a radio program out of, that will cover the bases, but perhaps also be a bit untypical. I’m aware of Elfman’s awkwardness in interview situations, and will obviously try to avoid being a “fanboy”. There will be no gushing. Since Richard Kraft knows me a bit personally, I’m hoping to get an easier segueway into the ‘interview atmosphere’.
Oh well, we’ll see.
ThorParticipantIn other words — would you be interested in joining a get-together, boingomusic?
ThorParticipantI’ve now booked my trip to Vienna. If everything goes as planned, I will also get the opportunity to a brief interview with the man himself!
Boingomusic, I see that you are going. Is anyone else? I’m thinking about creating a get-together before one of the concerts.
July 25, 2017 at 12:27 pm in reply to: Giacchino's Spider-Man music was less Horner & Zimmer and more Elfman #98275ThorParticipantI tried listening to this, but hated it as I do 99% of all Giacchino.
ThorParticipantZimmer is one of the most versatile composers around, constantly reinventing himself when his “copycats” do not. But that’s a different discussion.
I maintain what I said earlier — I don’t think it’s a prerequisite to do big superhero movies (or other action blockbusters) to have a sense of versatility.
ThorParticipantRyan — personally, I think there’s more than enough versatility between something like THE CIRCLE, THE END OF THE TOUR or THE UNKNOWN KNOWN, just to mention three recent ones that I’ve all liked. I really want him to take a long, big break from these superhero-type movies. He’ll get his ‘diversity’ fix perfectly without them.
ThorParticipantAny relation to Dave?
ThorParticipantYeah, it’s nice that he varies his assignments and all, but there are plenty of ‘big’ titles he can do (for the money) that aren’t big and bombastic action stuff. Not that Elfman needs that money anyway.
ThorParticipantMeh. I don’t care about superhero movies, and I’ve not cared for an Elfman superhero score since BATMAN RETURNS, basically. I also think the last big, “bombastic” score he did that was any worthwhile was ALICE IN WONDERLAND, and that’s, what, 7 years ago now. I prefer him in ‘indie’ mode these days.
Junkie XL was a better fit, but here — too — I prefer him in other modes, or for other genres.
ThorParticipantThat’s good, because I’ve had a hard time keeping up — especially with the price of physical items and shipping costs going up in the last few years. As a consequence, I’m still missing these physical CDs in my collection:
The End of the Tour
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Goosebumps
The Girl on the Train
Before I Wake
Fifty Shades Darker
The CircleBut I have most of them in digital file format.
As long as we’re on the subject — what are some non-film works since 2010 that I’m missing (like the Oscar theme etc.)?
ThorParticipantYes, I noticed Richard’s Facebook posts. She most certainly had an interesting and full career, and the fact that she started late is an inspiration to me, who is very much trying the same now at age 39.
ThorParticipantI don’t have any interest in expansions, but there’s a whole bunch of unreleased scores that I wish someone looked into.
ThorParticipantHey Thor, that’s what the “Freshness” column is for on the message list page. It will indicate time and date of last post. Clicking that will bring you to the last post in each thread.
That’s true. But I sometimes forget how many days it’s been since I last logged on, so something to indicate new posts would be great, if at all feasible.
Also, is there a direct ‘quote’ function? I just now copy/pasted your reply, and then put them in the ‘quote’ tags available at the bar on top of the comments field.
