I don’t have an ipod, so I wouldn’t be able to do this even if I wanted to. But I can understand how this allows one to “re-discover” Elfman or at least experience his music in a completely new way. I have often gone through my Elfman collection (on CD) chronologically, through all the style changes. But to be, say, thrown from DOLORES CLAIBORNE to PURE LUCK would be an entertaining punch in the face.
ThorParticipantWell, I think it’s a great punchline that I don’t believe has anything whatsoever to do with the actual film or score. The girl sang Christmas carols…so ‘Christmas’. And she sang badly….hence ‘Nightmare’. So ‘Nightmare Before Christmas’. Cruel, yes, but funny.

Sorry about that.
ThorParticipantJust to let everyone know that Part 2 of the extensive Elfman Buyer’s Guide is now out on FSM Online. It really digs into the past and concerns Danny’s film and TV scores from TO DIE FOR back to FORBIDDEN ZONE (the first part ended with MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE). It also has a separate section with Boingo songs featured in fiction films from 1977 to 2000 (and brief descriptions of the obscure films).
Of course, you have to subscribe to get access to this.

I don’t see this as a Burton/Depp/Elfman project at all. But hey, I’m glad to be proven wrong.

ThorParticipantAll we wanted to know was who your number two was…..

ThorParticipantElfman is actually my number 2, even though I don’t like to reduce film score fandom to a sporting event. But John Williams is my biggest favourite, followed by Elfman, Goldenthal, Goldsmith, Zimmer, Poledouris and others.
I much rather like to see the idiosyncracies of each individual composer rather than compare them with criteria that don’t match each other.
November 30, 2005 at 1:58 pm in reply to: Vote Danny Best Modern Day Composer: Deadline Sunday November 27. #55943ThorParticipantWell, seriously, what is XM Satelitte Radio anyway? It’s certainly not a station I’ve heard about where I live (in Norway) and I’m sure it’s pretty esoteric in the US as well. So how much of a difference does such a vote really make?
Hmmm…then again, I’ve never really understood the fascination with internet polls, so there you go.
ThorParticipantWow, what a great site! Thanks a lot for the heads-up. I’ve seen much of it before, but not all. Too bad they cannot be downloaded.
ThorParticipantThanks for the comments, TenderLumpling. Allow me to comment on some of your comments.
> Boingo is still referred to as Oingo Boingo.
Well, yes, but I was referring to the fact that their last studio album dropped the “Oingo” moniker.

> Knights of the Oingo Boingo, while Charlie, is
> better suited for an Oingo Boingo venue.Yes, I agree. However, THE CORPSE BRIDE hadn’t yet arrived when I finshed the guide. I thought some of the “pop” songs (“Augustus Gloop”, for example) had a very theatrical “pastiche” feel to them, and that’s why I thought Mystic Knights rather than Boingo.
> Is that really Elfman’s fault? The music in the
> [Spiderman 2] album is all Elfman’s.No, I wasn’t blaming Elfman as such. But even though I focus on the album for the most part, I had to make that aside to the score in the film. Also, it is likely that Elfman’s inspiration dwindled somewhat with all the troubles surrounding the score, and that is mirrored in what wound up on the album as well.

So even though the female vocal has a Middle Eastern association, one shouldn’t necessarily adhere to that association every time. I don’t think it’s any more out of place in HULK than it is in GLADIATOR (or vice versa).

But I must say that I was a bit disappointed with the commentary track. Unlike the brilliant EDWARD SCISSORHANDS commentary, where Elfman actually comments on the things that are happening onscreen, the PLANET commentary seemed just be leftovers from the interview that were pasted in in more or less random spots throughout the film. Same with Burton’s commentary. LAZY!
ThorParticipantI’m not working for the FBI or anything, but I think I can safely confirm that that is Danny’s signature. I have a signed poster of MODERN VAMPIRES myself (with both his and Richard Elfman’s signature) and it looks almost the same as the one pictured in your post.

ThorParticipantHi,
I think the only way to get in touch with him for us “mere mortals” is to go through his agency. I don’t remember the agency’s address at the moment (is it Gorfaine/Schwarz or Kraft/Benjamin?). Hopefully, someone else can give you that address. Once you have that, just write him a personal letter (not an e-mail) and hope for the best.
Good luck,
TJ
ThorParticipantIt’s called ageing, Spider-Fan. It is customary for people in their 50’s to gain weight. However, has anyone seen Peter Jackson lately? He’s dwindled to the skinny guy he used to be when he made things like BAD TASTE….
ThorParticipantDid you get to talk to any of them, Ryan?
And what is mezzanine….some kind of drug?
