Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantThat’s right, John. Hot to Trot is like a rock-version of Pee-Wee. Well…atleast in certain parts. Also, I kinda miss that side of Elfman, the goofy side. We got a little of that in Nacho Libre but not enough.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantAll joking aside, Lucius. I do like the Hot to Trot score.

ParticipantGordonBlu, maybe a little visual could help:

ParticipantMr. Dantz, Elfman’s music isn’t always sacrificed. In last year’s Wanted his music was very respected by the filmmakers. And I recall in Kingdom it being the same. Although not as much as in Wanted. But here….I don’t know what McG was thinking. He spent all this money on having Elfman score his movie and then doesn’t use it.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantAgreed, Lucius. Elfman’s score was BARELY heard. I think I heard maybe 10 minutes of his music. Elfman wasted his time with this movie. He and Raimi should have made up so he could have scored Drag Me to Hell.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantDanny Elfman wasted his time with this movie. The mix was HORRIBLE. How long was the album? 40 minutes? I think I “heard” maybe 10 minutes of that.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantWord on the street is that Chris Young is scoring Spidey 4. Not a shocker…
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantI disagree with Danny Biker. The movie having a well-defined theme helped it from being generic. The Kingdom was a score that was generic as a result of it being random action cues. Here you had a great theme that held it all together. I can just imagine John Connor doing something heroic and that theme blasting through the cinema speakers. This may actually be Elfman’s most crowd-pleasing score since Men in Black.
By the way, is it just me or does track #8, Hydrobot Attack kinda sound like Planet of the Apes?
Descent Into Mystery
Participant“Danny was able to capture in music the delicate nature of humans and the unrelenting brutality of the machines.”
– McGThat’s what he wrote on the CD booklet.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantI don’t know, man. They had a lot of Star Trek and Wolverine. I think Best Buy just hates Danny Elfman.

ParticipantThat was the rumor at the time. This was the beginning of the period when people accused Elfman of using ghost writers. Everyone claimed it was Shirley Walker who was writing most of his scores. Which is why eventually the went their seperate ways. Elfman just couldn’t keep using Walker as a conductor if people were thinking that it was her writing the music.
As for Prince, Elfman did credit Scandalous on the CD. So, if any ripping off was done there was credit given.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantI bought the CD tonight. Interesting thing is that I got the LAST copy. The same thing happened last summer when I bought Wanted. Either Best Buy is only putting out one copy or they REALLY are selling out.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantTime to bump some threads.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantScandalous was one of the songs recorded in 1988. So, yea, you are sadly incorrect.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantHas anyone acknowledged that this is Elfman’s first BIG movie since Willy Wonka in 2005. Wanted and Hellboy 2 were like minor summer movies. They were movies that easily got lost in the hype of others. But…this…this is BIG. This movie could easily open with $100 million, especially since it’s a holiday. And with the economy people aren’t traveling so they’ll just go to the movies.
I think it’s great, more exposure for Elfman.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantI hate to disappoint people, but the songs were written WAY in advance! Burton needed them cause they were being used within the movie. Remember that there’s two scenes with Joker dancing to Prince, first at the Museum and then at the Parade. Usually when songs are being used as part of the story the filmmakers and actors need to hear them in advance to know what they are supposed to be listening to in the movie. All the important songs were recorded in mid 1988, as the movie was in production. The rest of the album was recorded in EARLY 1989.
The album was released on June 20, three days before the movie opened. Which pissed off Elfman since, as a result, his score album was released months later so it wouldn’t affect the sales of Prince.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantI don’t know if it is the second thing he scored or not. The episode aired in 1986 but that was also the year he scored Back to School and Wisdom.
No, wait. It wasn’t. It may be his THIRD score. He had already scored an episode from Amazing Stories titled Mummy Daddy.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantThe fact that this movie is already at Cannes, during a month with ANOTHER movie featuring an Elfman score…it is safe to assume that Elfman didn’t do much music for this movie. I can’t imagine him scoring this and Terminator at the same time. He probably did a theme or two and the rest are just songs.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantThat TV channel is called Chiller. That’s the name you’re seeing on the bottom of the video. lol.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantYou’re thinking of the other 9.
Descent Into Mystery
ParticipantNick, did he say that in a positive or negative way?
Descent Into Mystery
