ParticipantWell, I can see where Shore’s coming from. Some directors like to keep the score budget way low, and sometimes won’t even hire an actual orchestra. Then, the entire score is sample-based, which is NEVER as good as the real thing. You also have to take into account the pressures from ignorant directors/producers that want nothing more than a temp track. That happens on ALL budgets. I think it mainly comes down to the filmmakers, ultimately. If the filmmakers are intent on having a quality, unique score, the budget will reflect that, independent or not.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantI don’t understand Shore’s logic, but I highly doubt he and Elfman were having it out with each other.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantIt’s definitely intriguing, but I don’t think it’s an “alternate” theme. I’m thinking it was originally part of the score, then he had to rescore the part due to added or cut scenes. The piece could be a mish-mash of a couple of different pieces, too. Alternate theme, though? I doubt it, considering the established theme is pretty bloody brilliant.
By the way, I just saw Dark Knight, and I heard a couple of cues that sounded like they would take off into “Decent into Mystery”. I guess Elfman just hit the proverbial nail on the head the first time, eh?
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantDude, you think that theme is better than the one that was actually used? Or do you even have an opinion?
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantIf that’s an alternate theme, it absolutely pales in comparison to the actual theme.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantElfman won’t get nominated for anything, and either will “Wanted”. Mark my words.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantLOL! It’s Edward Hatter Hands!
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantTo make it seem like you’re getting something extra, even though you’re getting the exact same thing everyone else does. It’s a bogus incentive tactic.

ParticipantDuke Ellington.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantWow … interesting! Sounds like a mix of Big Fish and SOP. The Main Titles is very strange. Sounds great, though. I love Elfman scores like this!
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantElfman the body-builder!
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantYow, everyone’s anticipating an Oscar nod when the score hasn’t even been released yet? Whoa, you guys are WAY more fanboy than I realized!

Mr. Dantz
ParticipantYou’re right, Monsterhead. This is VERY serious business.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantHey guys, I think I found a shot from the movie!

Mr. Dantz
ParticipantOh, GAWD, that is embarrassing! No more silly, over-dramatic, comic book superhero movies, PAHLEEZE!
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantThat website is still up. Victory is ours – take it down, Danny! LOL!

ParticipantThat train scene score made me laugh a few times. There are places where thematic material just doesn’t belong.
Mr. Dantz
Participantit’s so strange to finally see Elfman’s masterpiece being acknowledged. It just shows how timeless these songs have become. This was a pretty nice rendition, although I’m not a fan of the singer or the band. I still prefer Fiona Apple’s version.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantI still love Burton’s opening sequences, despite what everyone says. A lot of it is probably due to the stellar music, though.

Mr. Dantz
ParticipantI have to agree that he has traversed into safe territory after his best works Nightmare and Ed Wood. With the exception of Apes, I don’t think he’s made a BAD movie, though. He probably delegates more work to other people now that he can. Through that process, an artist’s vision can get kind of clouded. He should do an independent movie.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantThis would be bad. It’s the kind of movie where the director doesn’t have much creative freedom in the first place, unless the producers let him have a completely different take on the series. But the first three were so popular, that wouldn’t happen in a billion years.
Mr. Dantz
ParticipantWhat I want to know is, how does he have TIME for any of that? But the guy certainly has taste, no doubt about it!
