Participant…and stop selling out with rock covers. This, to be honest, seems more appealing than band covers… even though I haven’t been able to hear the samples

ParticipantI really doubt Tim will do it. I’d take it with a bag of salt and 3 jars of pepper. If he does do it, it’s messed up. And if Russell Brand stars in a Tim Burton film the world will end. He’s a moron
Norby
ParticipantI think it refers to the time he cut someones arms off with a rose. Think it happened while scoring batman returns.
Norby
ParticipantWonder who arranged it. Does anyone know?

ParticipantNice. But i think edward scissorhands choice is a bit predictable. Wouldn’t it be nice to hear ‘edwardo the barber’, or ‘the tide turns’? And it would’ve been nice to hear some of the better batman tracks. I would’ve replaced final confrontaion with ‘first confrontation’, or ‘charge of the batmobile’. Much more exciting tracks, I think. But still, should be fun (if they don’t play the fast music half the speed)!

ParticipantWould be nice if Danny went back to writing a purely orchestral score for this one. Mmm… Sleepy Hollow.

ParticipantHe’s just trying things out I think… and they don’t always work (POTA ahem!). I think it’s good he’s exploring. No artist wants to just churn out the same stuff. His stuff hasn’t been as good recently as his early stuff in my opinion, as Danny’s hasn’t been as good. But I think some of it is down to their inherent love of exploring… which is admirable, I think. They’ve got some fun projects coming up, so hopefully they’ll hit on smething. Danny’s ballet sound like it’ll be a blast!

ParticipantPoor IG didn’t get much of a chance… maybe he was Danny Elfman!!! ANYHOW, on a more positive and inquisitive note… does anyone happen to know if Rabbits and Rouge will be released on CD?

ParticipantI like the new sound for the batman films, actually. Even though I’m not a huge Zimmer fan. Probably not great music as it is, but in the film it worked! And Zimmer’s a tool for calling the original theme Jolly.

ParticipantWell of course I know there are moments in some scores and I agree with your examples. But everyone seems to be really dissing the Begins score, and I don’t think it’s right. I think it works for the film and really captures the essence of the character. I don’t usually like Zimmer stuff to be honest, and I’m vaguely scared that this time round we might end up with something like ‘The Rock’ on this film. Anyhow, the first film does have some thematic material and, in my opinion, it’s sufficient thematic work! And the string writing is nice, though this may be down to JNH. I’m not sure.

ParticipantI can’t really see what peoples problem is with the music in the Begins, to be honest. I love Dannys Batman music, but it’s for a different film. Burtons films were much more over the top dark, melodramatic and operatic interpretations of Batman. And they were absolutely bloody amazing films/scores. But equally I think Zimmers very understated score and thematically lacking score of Begins worked really well for that film. I was a bit upset when I heard they’re goin for a clear theme in this one. It could mess it up I think, not least because I never like Zimmer’s themes. They always sound the same. I thought the simple music of the first film was perfect for that realization of Batman.
It’s the 21st Century, I honestly think it’s about time we stopped worrying about themes for films and look forward. It’s a dated idea which has been around for years before film that doesnt necessarily work for everything now. That’s why as a purely musical experience I don’t enjoy some of Dannys new film music as much as his older stuff, but in the film it always works great and it more often than not helps the story. Danny shouldn’t get flak for not using big clear themes in some films either, it’s not like he couldn’t do one…It’s because it wasn’t right for the film. I like the idea that the best compliment a film composer can get is that no one noticed his/her music! It shouldn’t get in the way. Which is what Zimmer’s original score didn’t do! And Elfman’s scores for Batman didn’t do either because they were that type of film the required a nice big melodramatic score. So, let’s just look forward to what should be a great film!Norby
ParticipantSounds good!

ParticipantSorry I didn’t mean to offend. I get your point… and I know, most people don’t even know. I love Danny of course, I was just surprised! Don’t be sad

ParticipantYeah and your point is…?

ParticipantI think it matters. Yeah I know that’s what I thought… you’d think by now he’d know about harp writing. But I suppose he could be being sarcastic.

ParticipantTrue… but this isn’t a film!

ParticipantWhy doesn’t he know why the letters are there? Yes, they are the harp pedal markings, but you should really know about harp pedalling if you’re going to write harp music…otherwise you’re guessing and loads of stuff might be impossible to play. Mmm… wish he didn’t admit that!
Anyway, should be fun.

It’s become iconic for them… fact. all i’m saying is that I think the re-release played to this audience. As I said, maybe it was a good thing to give them something, but I just don’t think it was the most interesting or enjoyable thing to do. But financially it may have been more viable.

Participantbut anyway apologies, I shouldn’t have brought it up and sorry to offend anyone who is a fan of manson… Just wish the extended CD had’ve given us more music from the film score and hadn’t, as it turned out, simply played to the emo audience which have taken nightmare under their stylistic wing as it were. Maybe it was an interesting idea and maybe they were right to give the new audience something. I just didn’t like the artists… a new performance of the score by a different orchestra/vocalists, for example, would have been extremely interesting and more exciting than rock versions I feel. Anyone agree?
A rant… apologies,
C

ParticipantUnfortunately, that doesn’t make it any good.

ParticipantI hope there is a big 20 year batman celebration next year, including a cinema re-release. please, though, let there be no soundtrack re-release with fucking U2 or something doing instrumental covers. I know there won’t be, but the nightmare re-release was so shit and dissappointing. Marlyn Manson is arrogant and brought nothing to danny’s music. The others were pretty shit too.
Norby
ParticipantWould love another one myself. Would be great to get some of that mid 90’s unreleased stuff.

ParticipantAmanda,
Have you read Janet Halfyards book Danny Elfman’s batman? well, she has a photocopy of the entire score, which I think she will let you see if it is for purely academic reasons. I asked her if I could see it for teaching purposes as I teach a module at University in Ireland on Danny’s music, to which she agreed, but I ended up not getting to see it, a mixture of my own laziness and clerical issues within my university. You may have to visit birmingham conservetoire of music, or, if your university is willing, you may be able to get it via inter-library loan. At any rate, contact Janet… Just google her name and you’ll get her e-mail. I found her very helpful and she my at least be able to point you in the right direction of where to acquire Elfman scores… Bare in mind however I think she said it cost her around $2000 for a photocopy of the score, so if you’re looking multiple scores, you won’t get your hands on it without serious expense! Hope this is helpful,
Best wishes,
Christopher
