ParticipantGot the email and bought it right away. Although I’ll have to pay $8 for shipping…

ParticipantI do agree that while Nolan is fantastic director with a mind filled with great ideas, he should really start to hire more talented composers. The Prestige could have been a masterpiece with a decent musical work (I’m not saying that the music was bas, just totally monotonic).

ParticipantTo change subject :
does anybody else feel that the choir of the Alice’s theme reprise in “The Proposal/Down The Hole” (part of the film where she’s following the rabbit) are samples ? If they are not, it sure sounds like it…DannyBiker
ParticipantThe main title music was just another variation of the Alice theme. As we get 5 Reprises and many variations inside the score itself, I really don’t feel that it is “missing”…

ParticipantHappy Birthday Ryan !

ParticipantSorry Descent, I don’t hear any Bernstein’s influences in Danny Elfman’s work. At least not in the examples your a mentionning here (the Airplane example is a joke right ?).
DannyBiker
ParticipantA tip for you : you can edit your post by clicking on the “Edit Post” option beneath it.

As for the Elfman’s appearance, I can’t help you. Youtube is getting more and more restrictive each day so you should really save those kind of videos when they are still up…

ParticipantWell that early release is part of Disney’s new politic, the one that almost caused the film not to be released in many European countries.
While I’m certainly disappointed about this light DVD version, I’m glad they’re releasing a DVD/Bluray/Digital Copy edition so I don’t have to buy the thing again when I’ll get a Bluray player. Extras are getting worse these days anyway…

ParticipantHere’s another take on the question : “Where is the Futterwacken dance album ?!”
DannyBiker
ParticipantOf course. Who isn’t ?
DannyBiker
ParticipantOk Ryan before you erase this : it’s a French fan who thanks M. Elfman (and M. Burton) for their work in general. I’m basically answering that this board is a fanbase and that Elfman doesn’t actually visit the place (on a daily basis at least) or answer posts.

ParticipantAs long as it’s a Van Sant collaboration, I’m not too worried…

ParticipantYou sons of ****…
Besides, with Disney’s plans to release the DVD on June 1st already, Belgium (as well as The Netherlands, Italy and the UK) decided to boycott the film…Sad day to be a Burton/Elfman fan…
DannyBiker
ParticipantFrom what I read on another board, tracks 6, 8, 13 and 16 contain additional music by Edward Shearmur and Thomas Lindgren. That’s apparently what the album booklet says…
DannyBiker
ParticipantI see your point Descent and agree with it. I don’t think we are making a saint out of Danny Elfman. I’m the first one to point out resemblances or rip-off’s. Our point is more about the music itself here : while there are many examples of Elfman quoting Herrmann, we just don’t estimate it is the case here…

DannyBiker
ParticipantStill, I’m with TenderLumpling on this, it is just a common rhythm that got popular with Gustav Holst’s Mars, especially in the film music field.
DannyBiker
ParticipantWell you should be more specific on where do you hear the connexion then…
The only thing I can put my finger on is the main rhythmic of both music. But as much as we know how Danny Elfman tend to quote his master, I still find this a rather doubtful rapprochement. It’s just a basic rhythmic that can be found in many film scores or 20th century pieces for orchestra.
Don’t get me wrong : it could be an Hermmann influence. What I say is that it could not be as well and that’s why it doesn’t sound obvious to me…DannyBiker
ParticipantI don’t hear it either.
If you talk about the rhythmic of both cues, I would say it’s quite a weak resemblance…DannyBiker
Participant“Proposal/Down the Hole” is indeed one huge reference to “Up and Out”. The fact that “Up and Out” was used for the “Down the Hole” sequence in the first trailer makes it even clearer.
However, am I the only one to feel it doesn’t fit well ? Let me explain : watching Charlie, I associated the “Up and Out” melody and tempo to an ascending movement and I feel puzzled by this association with a descending movement. When I listen to that clip, I picture Alice trapped in the glass elevator with Johnny Depp laughing like an idiot !Then again, we will have to see where that music is actually playing in the film and how does it actually work with the images. And then again, I’m a nerd…

ParticipantI don’t know if I want to hear a Captain America score by Danny Elfman. Then again, nobody cares about my opinion, but I just find that character so cheap and pointless. It may be due to the fact that I’m not into comic books at all…or that I’m European !

I tend to agree with TenderLumpling about The Green Hornet; I’m 99 % positive that Elfman wanted to work with Gondry…
DannyBiker
ParticipantPlease no more superhero film. Comicbook movies in general are fine with me – besides, it’s getting tough to get involved in a Hollywood blockbuster that is not based on a comicbook these days. But I think he pretty much said what he had to say about superheroes.
I’d like to see him score the next Gus Van Sant film. Or that new Malick project with Bale and Bardem – but that won’t happen I guess…DannyBiker

ParticipantI’d say I would give him the freedom to dig in any spot he wants to but only if it makes the film better. Because after all, that’s the all point.
DannyBiker
ParticipantWell, why don’t try reading the previous messages ?

DannyBiker
ParticipantNo I think that’s the cd cover for the Johnny Depp in Wonderland movie.
Oh wait…
