ParticipantSo, hem, it may not be the Lalaland release but something interesting appeared online…
DannyBiker
ParticipantWow, the prices are crazy high on other platforms.
I order a copy myself, I really can’t recall if I already have a copy or not…DannyBiker
ParticipantThe link is broken… :/

ParticipantCar Crash has the SOP theme in it as well; this score is like a “Danny Elfman’s Independent Movies Greatest Hits”. That being said, it’s a really pleasant listen every time…
DannyBiker
ParticipantSo close to Dumbo’s release date, additional composers are already warming up…
DannyBiker
ParticipantCan’t wait for the announcement of a CD/digital release…
DannyBiker
ParticipantYeah, no matter what will come out of it, this is one of the best teaser I’ve seen in a while.

ParticipantWait, are you talking about the 50 Shades thingy (I’m no expert of these scores) or “Don’t worry, he won’t get far on foot” ?
I do agree that with the limited amount of film scores he’s doing these days, most of them being smaller budget films that don’t require heavy orchestral writing, seeing so much of them being almost co-written with composers who don’t necessarily get the proper credit for their work is a major letdown. Especially coming from a composer who has always been very protective about his work.
I mean, if it was big budget movies, I would understand : schedules can be pretty tight and I could conceive that he’s doing them for the money, concert work perhaps becoming his main goal as a composer. But for indie films or films directed by one of his long time collaborators, it’s definitely disappointing.
If I’ll be spending most of time while listening to one of his recent scores thinking “I hope this track was written by Danny”, that will certainly hurt the experience a lot.

ParticipantYup, Happy Birthday to who, 30 years later, is still my musical hero.

ParticipantWanted might be the last great pure action score from Elfman, in the vein of one of his masterpiece, Mission:Impossible, although he didn’t go back a lot to the genre in the last 10 years. It was surprisingly melodic especially after the Hulk/Planet of the Apes years where he’d go all over the place with sometimes mixed results. To be honest, the song is fun because it’s Danny going back to its roots but it’s really nothing to write home about.
Success Montage is still one of my favourite Elfman cue.

ParticipantGood lord. That was some dizzyingly unwatchable dreck.
Money shots, money shots everywhere…
DannyBiker
ParticipantOh, so it wasn’t like that in the film ? Too bad because that’s one epic cue…
Edit : I watched the scene from the theatrical cut on Youtube and…what were they thinking not including Elfman’s music ? He was brought on the project to bring fresh material and they left out one of his best effort on the film in favour of some generic action cue.
On a side note, I wonder if the music was added using a commercial copy because I have never really given up on restoring his music in Spider-Man 2…

ParticipantIndeed, it might be the first time I’ve read a composer being so nerdy about another. Although I suspect Elfman’s passion for Herrmann to be somewhat similar.
McCreary will probably become one of Hollywood’s big names in years to come, along with Austin Wintory; they are both really talented. I recommend McCreary’s latest “God of War”, it’s a fantastic score and I actually hear a lof of Elfman in there (and I understand why now)…
DannyBiker
ParticipantWhere did you read about the repose ?
DannyBiker
ParticipantThat book store lady is a Michael Stuhlbarg look-alike…
Music sounds really nice.
DannyBiker
ParticipantIt’s coming out next week here as well; it’s not uncommon for smaller films to get advanced wolrdwide release dates but this is quite early indeed.
I’ve read somewhere that the music has elements of bebop so it might be Danny having fun just for the giggles. Anyway, there’s a Weepy Donuts track, all is well.
DannyBiker
ParticipantIndeed, quite moving for such a short film; it captures pretty well the mixture of loneliness, serenity and mischievousness that emanates from people who reach an old age.
DannyBiker
ParticipantTo be honest, the only good animated films Elfman was involved with were Burton-related. All the rest is just bland, trash, bland, trash…
DannyBiker
ParticipantI think I already wrote this but my only grip with the Hero’s theme is that he never used the ending part of it, the most heroic part actually. He always went for the Justice’s League theme instead which I don’t really care about. It is used a lot indeed but it takes some time to identify every usage.
And the best parts of the two big action cues are either missing from the film or inaudible…
DannyBiker
ParticipantGreat insight !
I really dig the description of Elfman’s music as “what a kid’s mind think the soundtrack should be”. Beautifully put.DannyBiker
ParticipantThat’s pretty close to the original tracklist actually…

ParticipantYeah, I had doubts for latter, more busy, cues. But there are few cues with strings only if I remember well…
DannyBiker
ParticipantI guess we could know but we would have to watch the film… :/

ParticipantI do hope it gets recorded though as I always wanted to hear Elfman writing for smaller ensemble. He wrote minimalistic music but mostly never an orchestral score with only a few instruments. The only score that got close that I can remember of was Dolores Claiborne that was strings instruments only.
