ParticipantWhat a touching film. I had the chance of meeting Clare Elfman twice.
The first time, I did not know anybody. And she sat right next to me and started chatting.
She was such a nice person. I could have talked to her for hours. Such an interesting woman.
We talked a lot about education, since she was a teacher and I teach as well. She made me feel confortable from the minute I arrived. It’s so moving to see the intensity of such a short film. It’s short. But yet, very deep.

ParticipantDanny and the Hillbilly Boyz ?!?
It reminds me of Mosley and the B-Men from a midnight run. Hopefully, it’s a new song by Danny. The movie is already out in theaters in Switzerland. How strange it gets such a late release in the US. Haven’t seen it yet.

ParticipantI just finished listening to the score for the first time. And I’m very pleasantly surprised.
What a breath of fresh air !!!It is, in my opinion, the best listening experience, compared to the other two albums.
Even if I loved the themes, the first two scores were very repetitive.I love the new sounds, the orchestrations are great. It’s light, subtle, and yet very inventive. A lot of new sounds for Elfman.
It reminds me sometimes of John Powell, in scores like I am Sam. « Makeover » or « blueprints » are perfect exemples.
I absolutely love it!!!!

ParticipantWell, many things that haven’t been released are scores that are too short to get a proper CD release.
I’m talking about short films, commercials, theme park rides, concert works, tv themes or even movies he’s only partially scored (main themes).
In some cases, like Chicago or Anywhere but here, there’s not much more than the main theme that’s already on the song-soundtrack.Other than that, I don’t see many films with full-length unreleased scores…
I actually see WAAAAYYYY more unreleased Oingo Boingo stuff than film scores 😉

ParticipantWell, Corpse Bride, Alice, and specially OZ were perfect projects that he honored with his beloved style for fairytales and magic.
He was pretty close to his 90’s roots. But I also have been disppointed with some ideal projects which sounded weaker than I had expected. Goosebumps is a good exemple. Perfect score, but not very strong melodic elements except the short main theme.
I’d say my biggest disappointment was Frankenweenie, which really lacked a melodic and memorable theme approach.
It was instead closer to “Meet the robinsons” or “Peabody and Sherman”.Only time will tell.
But it’s hard not to expect the perfect score.boingomusic
ParticipantWell… Grinch = mischievous christmas.
When I hear “Christmas”, “Mischievous” and “Elfman” in the same project, I become really excited.
That’s what Nightmare Before Christmas was all about, and some parts of Batman Returns as well.
Elfman & Christmas go well together. In my opinion, almost better than Elfman & Halloween (if Oingo Boingo doesn’t count).
No, let’s just hope he goes for a more theme-oriented score approach, instead of a Dark-Christmas-Mood-DNA approach.
After Justice League, here is another opportunity to go back to his roots. I loved his work on Justice League, technically. But
not thematically. I really hope it will be all about themes and melodies. After all, even James Horner did some “Elfmanisms” with his Grinch score.

ParticipantMan… i don’t understand why everyone is so disappointed with these tracks.
I mean, I get why Zimmer-fans are not happy.
Because this is high quality music and they definitely can’t understand it because Elfman’s music is too complex for them. But come on, Elfman fans. You can’t react like that. Nobody knows how Hero’s theme is used in the movie. Maybe it simply doesn’t need an epic theme at that specific moment.
I don’t care if it’s epic or not.
I just like the track. It’s clever, it definitely has a strong Elfman vibe. The Batman theme is present in many ways.
The only thing that surprises me is the way the electronics sometimes cut in, just as if they were edited, cutting the orchestra to get in.
But this is definitely a choice he made.
And I’m sure I’ll get used to it.boingomusic
ParticipantThank you for this nice interview Thor.
Loved the questions and the way you put all this together.Thank you !

ParticipantYeah it was great to see him react to other composers’ music !
Camillu, I’m sorry you had such a disappointing experience. There probably was a reason why he acted like this.
I’ve seen him many times, and he’s always been a gentleman.
He spent the whole week in Vienna, going from rehearsals to master classes, and from interviews to lectures. I guess he needed some time for himself.
His team is usually very nice and professional.
I’ve seen and talked to Laura Engel several times and she’s always been nice. Although she can be very protective sometimes.I hope you’ll have another chance to see him.
I remember one of the producers from the Burton / Elfman concert was very rude, several times, with a few fans. The rest of the team was actually shocked by the way he reacted.
These things happen.boingomusic
ParticipantHere’s a video of all the bits I’ve filmed during the evening.
The Sam Raimi speech is at 11 minutes.
I made the video private so that it can’t be searched on YouTube.
I wanted your thoughts on whether I should make it public or not. Knowing there’s going to be an official broadcast. Maybe it’s best to keep it as a private link. I don’t know…
What do you guys think I should do?
Enjoy the video :

ParticipantThor, then I know EXACTLY who you are !!!
Man, I wish we could have talked to each other. I thik I’ve actually filmed parts of your interview with him !!!
I’m uploading everything right now. So, you will have videos very soon.
I didn’t film the whole concert because I really wanted to enjoy the live thing. I also knew that ORF will broadcast the whole event very soon on television. So, it’s just a matter of time before you can enjoy the full concert in high quality. For now, I have videos of the Red Carpet, a few moments from the concert, Sam Raimi’s speech, Tim Burton’s message, the Hollywood in Vienna team speech, and Danny’s acceptance speech.
Just a few more hours to wait and it will be online !
ddddeeee, there’s a review i wrote last night, just above. It describes the whole set list.

ParticipantOk guys. So here’s a little feedback from the Gala concert in Vienna.
Danny arrived on the red carpet and took time to do several interviews. He shook hands with us and took time to talk and even accepted to take a picture with me.
The first half of the concert was a series of suites from LaLaLand, Lion King, Narnia, Beauty and the beast, Finding Neverland, Life of Pi, Mulan, Final Fantasy 8. Interesting suites.
Then, after the break, we got to hear brand new suites written by Elfman for the occasion.
Spider-Man, the original main titles, with a slight different orchestration.
Then a Medley, that started with Black Beauty, And faded to Milk, Men In Black and ended amazingly with Avengers. Great arrangements.
Then we got a suite of Sommersby. Great new arrangement that ended up with the “country” theme, with a country band that played with the orchestra. Absolutely perfect.
After that, we heard a great suite from The Wolfman. Very powerful.
Then, they moved to the Burton repertoire.
It started with the original Alice theme.
BeetleJuice came next, with a great new arrangement. Without the intro. Straight into the main theme.
Then, a few singers came on stage and performed an amazing version of This is Halloween.
During Edward Scissorhands, two Ballet dancers were dancing between the seats, looking like Edward and Kim. Graceful.
Batman and Batman returns. Again, a new suite. Shorter than the Burton/Elfman concerts.
This part ended with a brand new suite for the Simpsons. A great suite of variations on the main theme. Specially written by Danny.
Surprising, funny, and clever. The whole concert was synchronized to beautiful animations made for this concert, along with images from the movies. The lighting and the videos were simply perfect with the music.
Then, Hollywood In Vienna organizer came on stage and did a beautiful speech about Elfman and read a message from Tim Burton, congratulating him on his award and thanking him for his music and friendship.
Then, they screened a very moving video of Sam Raimi, telling how much he loves Danny, even if he knows Danny hated him for a couple years. He explained they’re both too passionate about their work, and how it’s thanks to Danny that he got passionate as well. He ended his speech by saying “I love you”.
It was wonderful to hear this, specially after what they went through a few years ago. Finally, Danny came on stage to accept the award. He did a beautiful speech, and then proposed to sing.
He sang “What’s this”. The beginning of the song was perfect, but when he got to the middle, his voice was barely audible. I think his emotions took over and he didn’t have enough breath to sing. It was actually very moving.
He got several standing ovations.
The whole evening was a success.
Wonderful experience.
I have many videos.
I’ll put them together when I get back home and I’ll post it for you guys.
I really wish you could have all been here to see this.
Time for bed now.

ParticipantMan!!! I’m at Gmoakeller. I waited a little bit before realizing that the gathering was yesterday!!! Sorry I missed it.
Going to the concert tonight.

ParticipantHi !
I’m sorry it took me so long to answer !!!
I’m going to the Gala Ceremony on friday the 29th.
It would be a pleasure to meet anyone from this board !
boingomusic
ParticipantYes I watched it. It’s basically a 15-minute Elfman interview. With some images of the ballet rehearsals.
I was hoping it would be longer and that we’d get some images from the orchestra sessions and some footage from the ballet itself.
Anyway, the Elfman interview was quite nice and it’s interesting to hear that the whole recording and CD+DVD release was Elfman’s own project. He paid himself for the recording. Even the 15minute featurette is produced by Elfman and his team. And the 5.1 mix is wonderful. It’s great to hear this music with such depth.
boingomusic
ParticipantWell, apparently, it’s not delayed, since I just open my mailbox and it just arrived 😊
boingomusic
ParticipantMan, I really hope he does better than this unbearable trailer music :
boingomusic
ParticipantThe DVD on the release will have a 5.1 version as well as footage from the recording sessions, an interview with Danny Elfman and other additional features.
Great news !!!!
boingomusic
ParticipantWow!!! The score for “The Circle” is absolutely stunning!
Good to hear some electronics again, and it’s so subtle, rich and intelligent!Wisdom 2.0, 30 years later !!!
boingomusic
ParticipantI knew it 😉

ParticipantGot my tickets for the Gala Concert 😉

ParticipantI just got an email back from Hollywood In Vienna confirming they plan to perform non-burton scores as well.
boingomusic
ParticipantYes, exactly. They broadcast it on TV and radio, and it’s also on YouTube in HD.
I just read the informations on their website. They only mention Burton films and the Simpsons.
So, maybe that’s the reason why it happened so quickly. They might have given up on the other non-burton soundtrack suites…
edit : I just emailed them to have more informations.boingomusic
ParticipantI got mine from http://www.cede.ch
Real cd, not a CD-R. Got Girl on train there as well and it was a real cd as well.
