Sorry I didn’t answer sooner. I was away a few days. Seems Danny Biker sent you the score. I’m glad you can finally listen to this beautiful music.

Oh man… I love this soundtrack so much. The music reflects to perfectly the feeling of regret, and nostalgia.
Even if it’s not as obviously nostalgic as Black Beauty, for example, it is in my opinion, way stronger. Maybe not melodically but it’s so deep.

I do have the promotional cd. And knowing it’s not on sale, I guess it’s something I could share.

But I also know I can’t post links to full albums here… Ryan… i need some help here… what should I do?

There’s going to be a CD release very very soon, as well as a 5.1 DVD version.
It’s worth waiting for the physical release ; )

I went to the World Premiere of Batman Live in Lucerne, Switzerland, last weekend.

It was SPECTACULAR. The conductor, and organizer of this event Ludwig Wicki is truely fantastic. His orchestra (the 21st century orchestra) has become one of the best film music orchestras in the world. They’re responsible for all these MOVIES LIVE with orchestra concerts from the past few years, which explains why so many of these concerts premiere in Switzerland, and why the composers travel all the way to prepare these events.

So, Danny Elfman and Steve Bartek were both there, and they seemed thrilled and more than happy about the result.

The “Scandalous” song in the credits was replaced by a new arrangement of the Batman Theme, Up The Cathedral and Descent Into Mistery, but with a slightly different and more dynamic orchestration!

I had seen the “Alice In Wonderland” orchestral premiere there two years ago and it was already a treat.
I must say the result with BATMAN was outstanding. And the dialog was clear, but some of the big sound effects were muted to let the orchestra breathe !

It was an amazing night, and getting to chat with Elfman & Bartek after the concert is always a nice way to end such a nice evening ;-)

I’m really sad to hear this. I wish you could see the show with him singing the NBC songs.

But, yeah, the concert toured in many many cities without Elfman being there.

There are two versions of the concert. One includes a Nightmare before Christmas musical suite, and the other one includes all the songs when Elfman attends.

The concert itself is definitely worth the price, if you’ve never seen it. Specially when it’s conducted by John Mauceri.
I’ve seen the concert quite a few times, and it’s really a treat when Mauceri is conducting. He participated in elaborating the concert, and he knows what he’s doing. I’ve seen all “versions” of the concert. Of course, the best one is the concert with Elfman, Mauceri and Cameron. But if I had to chose between Elfman being here without Mauceri, or Mauceri being here without Elfman, I would prefer the one with Mauceri. Because it’s a very hard program to conduct, and not everybody can handle it. So, if I were you, I would go.

I’m going to Lucerne in two weeks to attend the premiere of BATMAN live with orchestra.
Elfman is supposed to attend, as he did with Alice in Wonderland two years ago. I hope he won’t cancel this one.

Wow… That is unexpected, coming from someone who annualy gets ignored by the Academy…
And it’s even more surprising, when you think about the fact that he does not like this type of ceremony…

It has become such a cult song that people really do consider it as a n°1 hit single.

But I must say I’m confused about 1994 Boingo being their most successfull album.

The “Dead Man’s Party” album was the only certified GOLD record. So, in terms of sales, this is definitely their best selling album. I believe “Boingo Alive” was pretty close as well.

The “Dead Man’s Party” release, as a single, was complicated. Because the song was not meant to be a single in the very start. It was actually released as a b-side to “Juste Another Day” in 1986. It got a second release after the movie “Back to school” came out. This is maybe the reason why the single didn’t sell that much. Being released at different stages, and on two seperate 7″, the sales are actually divided on two different singles.

I can’t agree more with you Ryan. The theme has always been one of my favourites for the past ten years.
It’s so soft, fragile and magical. Great great score. Saw the movie couple years ago and realized it was ruining the music for me… So, I just stopped, and decided to forget all about the film!

Yes, so unexpected!!! I was hoping this would happen at some point, after I realized how much fun he was having performing live again… But after 2 Elfman/Burton halloween shows, and no Boingo song, I had lost hope….!

I hope there will be some other performances with better sound.

I corrected the link, and here’s a better image quality :

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Beye-RpqQE

And this is the performance he did the second night (november 1st) which is, in my opinion, way better :

I still can’t believe this surprise performance, after 20 years without Boingo, and 30 years after Dead Man’s Party’s release in 1985… Unbelievable!!!

    Lambegue, we messed up…!
I went looking for you at your seat, and didn’t find you either… I guess we both left our seat to go looking for the other.

The show was great. Danny was great. Way more energy than when I saw him the first night in London, and in Lucerne in Switzerland last year. He seems to enjoy singing, and it’s a great treat to see him have fun like this, and grinning like he did at the end. He still looks like he’s in the middle of a Boingo show!!!! So much energy!!!

The french orchestra was the weak part. A lot, I mean LOTS of sour notes. Even the choir’s singing was off at some moments. The pianist was really bad in my opinion. And I was surprised how the main melodies were sometimes burried under the other harmonies. The instruments weren’t even in synch in some parts!!!!

It’s a shame to invite a legend like John Mauceri to conduct an orchestra that isn’t even properly trained and ready to play.
It lacked a lot of dynamism, compared to the BBC orchestra in London, or even the 21st Century Orchestra in Lucerne.

I doubt that Elfman was happy with their performance. I know he’s very precise and he knows what he wants.
I’m sure he was disappointed. I’ve seen him praise and thank orchestras after their performance, but he did not do anything this time.

Plus, the orchestra in London was way bigger as well. Way more percussions. Way more players. A real organ. A real celesta. And I’m not going to talk about the THEREMIN player, who was OFF during the whole concert. It was an insult to elfman’s melodies….

I know I’m being harsh… But this was the third time I was seeing the concert. And I’m shocked to see so much amateurism when you’re inviting people as professional and important as Elfman and Mauceri.
The french organizer, Overlook Entertainement, should have put more effort into the quality of the performance, instead of all the merchandising (t-shirts, postcards, posters, SO EXPENSIVE stuff). The tickets were already double the price of what I paied for the best seat in London, and triple the price of what I spent in Switzerland.
They even found a way to sell 300$ VIP tickets to be able to see Elfman after the show. Only way to get to see him.

I saw Elfman in London after the show. I saw him in Lucerne too, because he came out by himself right after the show. We didn’t even have to wait, and he took a lot of time to chat, take pictures and sign stuff.
But for some reason, with Overlook entertainement in Paris, people have to be really rich to do so…. A shame…

Just got my CD today. Didn’t expect it to arrive this soon.

So far, I’ve listened to the first two tracks. It’s early to react, but I must say I’m not a huge fan of the titles… It’s a mix of pretty much everthing he’s done so far, without having any strong theme… I’m a little disappointed.
The second track, the quiet, lovely and happy kind of atmosphere is very pleasant, but again, it could be part of Frankenweenie, Meet the robinsons, or any other score he’s done these past few years.
There’s no “Signature” theme. Now… I will have to listen to more of it on the train, on my way to his show in PARIS tomorrow night ;-) ;-) ;-)

Really??? It got destroyed at Cannes?
Funny, Richard Elfman and Danny’s daughter Mali are currently in Cannes with Gus Van Sant…
I had totally forgotten Danny wasn’t involved in this project anymore.

“–I don’t know why Elfman signed on to it–“

Well, his daughter is producing the movie….
I’m not sure he’s composing the whole score though… Maybe just themes.

I’m really excited about this project.

Amazing stuff. Specially nice to hear him perform with a smaller ensemble. Wolfman was amazing with such a small orchestra. The piano parts are great.

    Thank you so much!!!

    Great News Ryan !

    Thank you ;-)

I agree, music samples are not really necessary anymore. But there are a few nice features about Little Demons, or Scream 2’s Cassandra Aria and other rare things that I really enjoyed having around here.

I think it would be really nice to have a list of EVERY SINGLE Elfman soundtrack, with a description of the different releases (official release, Lalaland re-release, Promo release, bootleg etc…)
So that it’s easy to see what is available and what’s not…
It’s probably a big amount of work, but it’s something I’d find helpfull.

Maybe a page with the upcoming concerts would be nice. Since the Burton / Elfman is touring, and more and more Film music concert tributes are happening around the world…

Anyway, thank you so much for everything Ryan.
