The more I listen to the samples, and the more I’m excited about this cd…
I think it might be a very nice surprise for all of usboingomusicParticipantWell, this reminds me of what happened few years ago with the scores for “INSTINCT” and “PROOF OF LIFE”. These were, to me, the biggest disappointment in elfman’s career. Action scores, with a lot of percussion, but without any strong thematic melodies…
I was even very disappointed with “A civil action” and “A simple plan”.
That was a very bad period because I really thought Elfman would never go back to his beautiful and magical works. Hopefully, I was wrong.
Anyway, I hope next year will be more intresting, because I really didn’t enjoy “Meet the Robinsons” and it seems like I won’t enjoy “kingdom” either…
boingomusicParticipantWow… AMAZING !
Thanks Ryan! It’s so nice to finally hear a new take on the Batman theme. This is done with so much respect, and it does sound like John Williams’ style. Very intresting.
Thanks!
boingomusicParticipantBatman it is !!!! Or maybe should we say, Journey to the center of the earth
boingomusicParticipantI really hated Batman Begins, because it felt wrong. I couldn’t see that dark vibe that was, to me, very necessary for a Batman movie…
But when I see the images with Elfman’s Descent Into Mistery, I realize that the movie could have been dark, and that the images are really beautiful, but the score wasted everything…! That’s a perfect example that proves that a score can actually kill a movie.
And about Chris Young’s Spiderman music, I totally agree : I would be more than happy to see a score release because I loved some parts of the score. Nothing actually worked on the movie because of that cut and paste mess, but I’m sure it would be a very interesting experience to listen to it on cd.
But that doesn’t mean that the music in the movie didn’t suck… Everytime I listen to these main titles, it creeps me out!!! Even my best friend who doesn’t know ANYTHING about music asked me right away : “what happened there??? the rythm changed without any progression, and even the sound quality isn’t the same…”boingomusicParticipantSorry Dawg Man,
Never got time to say THANK YOU SO MUCH for posting this. I watched the whole thing and loved it !!!!
-eric
boingomusicParticipantYES!!! That was actually the first thing that pissed me off. The movie started with that awfull low mix of the main titles, and suddenly, the Chris Young themes cut in, and it felt so random, no chord changes, no progression!!!! and then, suddenly, it goes back to that cheap low mix of the main titles theme…
I remember thinking : “And this is the most expensive movie ever made in Hollywood?!!!?? Come on guys… You can’t even edit and mix the main titles in a bearable way!!!”…
boingomusicParticipantWell, that sequence starts with the End Titles from “Sleepy Hollow”.
Then, the “Spiderman 1” Main Title sequence starts. It’s not from the second movie.
And it finishes with the Finale from “Edward Scissorhands”All these great scores are of course composed by Danny Elfman.
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantOk, well…
To me, the whole movie was a perfect PATCHWORK. Selected scenes linked to each other somehow…
Some scenes were good, some sucked, but nothing really made sense. As for the music, it’s the same. A big patchwork. I actually think that the poor Christopher Young went through the EXACT same thing Danny went through on the second movie.
I agree, Young’s music didn’t sound like Elfman’s, but I mean, it’s normal. It’s Young, not Elfman!!!
If the movie actually contained only Young’s music, with some re-orchestrated and re-arranged themes from Elfman, maybe it would have sounded like a real score. instead, we got real Elfman parts from the first and second movies, and parts from Young, all edited together, and I muss say, VERY VERY BADLY EDITED!!!
I’m sure we could have done better remixes with Garage Band… It was all cut and paste… The movie AND the score…. no wonder the whole thing was so boring….!I would have preferred watching it with a brand new score by Young instead of all this mess !
boingomusicParticipantWow. Isn’t it the first time ever, that a big orchestra with a choir will actually play Elfman music live?
I really hope this kind of things will happen more and more in the future!
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantActually, I’m not sure the hearing damage isn’t true. He’s been talking about this for a long time, even when Boingo was still alive…
I totally agree with you about the silly questions being asked a million times… I remember Danny talking about the will of recording new songs a while ago. He mentioned the possibility of doing a solo album several times. Does anyone remember this?
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantOh, and by the way, I forgot to say that MCA is releasing Music For A darkened Theater volumes 3-4 & 5 altogether for next halloween
boingomusicParticipantYes, and John Williams is going to do the backing vocals
boingomusicParticipantHi!
First of all, thanks for your nice comments about my music.
It’s pretty hard for me to describe what gives a music that “elfman vibe”. I studied composition and improvisation, but I’ve always been an intuitive person. I hate to seat and think about theories, and what chord progressions I should use, what structure should the piece have etc… I always start by writing melodies on the piano, and then, I start imaginating the orchestrations. I read all the analysis you guys have made about Danny’s music, and I’m quite impressed, but that’s not really the way I like to proceed. For the case of the Heartless Duke (www.myspace.com/illusionsoflight – I believe it is that song you’re talking about, right?), I wanted to write a duet between a mean ands heartless person, and an innocent little girl. Since it is a stop-motion animated short film, very inspired by Burton’s style, I wanted it to sound close to Elfman’s style without actually copying any of his melodies. I totally REFUSED to sit down and analyze Elfman’s chords progressions, because I knew I would end up copying him… I’ve been listening to elfman’s work since I’m 8years old (1988), and I felt like I could try to write my OWN music, and then give it that elfman-vibe by using the celesta, strings and pizz’… I really cannot explain, theoretically, what it is that makes that piece sound (or not) like Elfman’s work… To me, it has more to do with intuition, and feeling. Somtimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t
boingomusicParticipantI just listened to the score for the 4th time… I’m very disappointed.
First of all, the score is only 30minutes long. Then, there isn’t any real theme, except “The Future Has Arrived” theme, and one other theme that is almost a “copy and paste” of a theme that appeared in the Corpse Bride. There’s nothing really new, it’s a mix of already heard genres without any exciting theme…
I can’t wait to hear what you guys think…Eric
boingomusicParticipantI agree with Edward Bloom. It’s fake. No decent composer would change keys this way. It’s just a cut and paste, with some fading effects, and the pitch is slightly changed…
I know Chris Young is no Elfman, but he’s a great composer, and he would never do such a cheap job, specially when he finally gets the occasion to work on such a big blockbuster movie.
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantThank You so much, Thor.
Yes, it is exactly that Home Alone / Christmas vibe I wanted to capture.
I’m happy you liked it-Eric
boingomusicParticipantHi !
I can clearly see your elfman influence. I like the major to minor key changes. I know it’s pretty hard to give a “realistic” orchestral sound to a synth piece, but as Knight said, you should try to add some reverb to make it sound less “dry”.
Yes, there are other composers on this board. I know there’s a very talented person called Mr. Dantz, but I can’t remember his website.
I compose as well (film music and songs). If you want to hear it, here’s the adress :

There are two tracks that might interest you : the first one is “The World Of Senda”, and the second one is “The Heartless Duke” which is a song composed for an animated feature, clearly inspired by Elfman & Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas.
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantI totally agree with Dawg Man.
I saw the movie two days ago, and it really is worth seeing. It’s not the best, but it’s way better than Hannibal.
The storyline isn’t that amazing, and there’s no surprises, but the real power of this movie is the photography. The images, the colors, the main vibe of the picture is wonderfull. That being said, I really think it’s time to move on, and stop writing or shooting films about Hannibal…
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantI’m sorry. I really wasn’t sure about it. It seemed to be a serious site, otherwise, I would never have posted the link. Anyway, thanks Ryan.
Eric
boingomusicParticipantWow, thanks for pointing Ryan. I like it. Not all of it, but a song like “City Escape” has really some elfman spirit in it. Very interesting!
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantYes, I know Ryan, it probably won’t stop in Switzerland, but it might stop anyplace near Switzerland, like France or UK. I’d definitely go if it’s anyplace in Europe
boingomusicParticipantWell, I live in Switzerland, so it depends where it is, but I’m intrested
boingomusicParticipantHey Spider-Fan, I totally agree… I loved those great 80’s and early 90’s score, and apparently, we don’t get scores like these anymore… But you should just listen to Edward Shearmur’s Sky Captain Main Titles, it has that same vibe… And speaking of Elfman, I think his FABLE theme had some of this too… I really wish he could do somehing in this genre…
-Eric
boingomusicParticipantGreat Job Ryan!
I love the “frozen” look! - AuthorPosts
