I’m not sure that ballet is interesting. Tim Burton didn’t seem to approve the result.

When I met him in France at a Q&A 4months ago, I asked him if he had seen it… He answered “Yes”… And when I said “Did you like it ?” He said : “Well, you know…” and then stopped, felt embarrassed, laughed a little, and finally said “No comment…”

And about the score, I’ve heard it’s all synth…

Has anyone actually seen this, when it was in London?

Wow. I didn’t expect that. I just e-mailed Lakeshore Records to ask them about the cd, and what music it will contain. I’ll let you know if they answer me…

    Well… I’m actually intrested in any re-interpretation of Elfman’s works… As long as it’s not rap ;-)

And no one seem to care about the two elfman original demos?!?!!!?? I’m pretty happy to finally see them released on cd. And by the way, the Fiona Apple version might be very VERY intresting!

    Wow!

Congratulations. I loved it. I really hear the elfman influence ;-)
Very well done. I specially love the Ghost In Love!

I’m a composer too, and I alway love to hear other people’s work.

Keep on doing that. You’re very talented.

Well, actually, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe the Channel No 5 commercial doesn’t rip off Elfman’s music, they just used it, with copyright permission. I know it’s not the original version, but I think the version used for the commercial appears in some film music compilation…

    OH MY GOD!!!

“Instinct” uses a lot of cool percussions, if you want some percussion based scores, “Wisdom” is pretty intresting, even if it uses lots of synths percussions.

    Well,
I have the original version, the one that has the picture on the top, and as BLD379 said, I have 21 tracks on the cd, but the track listing says 20. The last one is a ghost track…

    I bought it in Europe in 1993. Maybe there’s a different release in Europe. I don’t know… That’s weird…

Well, I agree with BLD379. My 1993 cd listed 20 tracks, but the end titles were split in two parts, the second part being track 21.

Actually, this is EXACTLY like the corpse bride End Titles. The first track playing the more “classical” melodies, and the second track playing all the “jazzy” melodies.
I find this quite cool ;-)

    PLEEEEEEAAAAASE !!!!

Maybe I’m stupid, but I still don’t get it!!!!

    What has been recorded ????

Has The Original Serenada Concert work been recorded ?
Or is it only the adaptation for the DEEP SEA 3D that has been recorded ???

And then, what’s going to be released?

    The original concert work ?
Or the soundtrack to the DEEP SEA 3D movie ???

    I really hope we’ll get both versions….

Well, we know Elfman hates Broadway music !

The question is, will Burton re-use the songs (and/or score) from Sondheims musical, or will he only use the story and ask someone else (hopefully Elfman) to compose new music ??

I don’t know… Frankly, I’d hate to go see a Burton movie containing Broadway music, and I really can’t imagine Burton loving Broadway musicals…

Even if Elfman is not part of it, I really hope Burton won’t use the original music!

Well, actually, the Hall made NO RECORDING of the performance, but some people have actually recorded parts of it. Of course, it wasn’t legal, and of course, the sound quality isn’t fantastic.
I did not go to the concert, and I’m dying to hear what this piece sounds like.
The only samples I’ve heard are on this ELFMAN ZONE web site :

    http://www.bluntinstrument.org.uk/elfman/filmography/serenada/index.html

The “I forget” sample is…. WOW… there are no words!!!!

I m in Switzerland and I actually found a way to enter the american MSN CHAT and avoid the automatic european-msn redirection. Just try to enter with another browser (Internet explorer doesn’t work but try Netscape or Firefox).

Anyway, I just noticed then than msn chat is now available for MEMBERS ONLY. That means you have to pay… So, I just gave up. If someone goes and chats with Danny, please ask him about that MUSIC FOR DARKENED PEOPLE 3 cd, and about some boingo-rarities release. Can we hope for such things, or are all this things from the past…

    Thanks

Well, this the same question I was going to ask… Who’s gonna sing…
It’ll probably be John Avila… I mean, he’s the only one who actually had a singer career (Food For Feet). And Steve Bartek will probably do the backing vocals…
Maybe Sluggo will sing too (Reptiles and Samurais, and Monster Mash were always sung by Sluggo in concerts)…

Another question that came to my mind is : Ok, Sluggo, Vatos, Avila and Bartek will reunite for one night, but does this mean they’ll play any Boingo music????!!!???
Then I just saw that SteveBartek.com has changed the Poster of the concert, and it’s written that they’ll play Boingo Hits. It’s also written that IT IS NOT a reunion concert…

But there’s this one thing : it says “with the presence of Richard Elfman and other Special Guests”… I know Elfman said he’ll never ever return, and that for him, it’s just far behind, but I just can’t stop thinking WHAT IF…….
Do you guys think it’s worth the trip from Switzerland to L.A. for just one week-end, and then go back….? I just don’t know what to do…. Seeing Rick Elfman would be great too…

Well, I’ve been trying to get some of the tracks, especially the gipsy violin track. He even talks about the artist : Caroli Pooka and his gipsy band! I’ve tried everywhere, and have NEVER been able to find anything. If someone does, please let me know. I know Richard Elfman reads this forum once in a while, maybe he could help us…

Wow. Great interview. The KCRW interviews are usually very good.
Have you guys heard the one from 1998? If you look for it in the same web site, you’ll be able to listen to it.

Oh and, did you guys hear the Only A Lad song at the end??? It’s not the regular version. At first, I thougt it was the Cat EP version, but it isn’t. It’s edited, and it’s not even performed and mixed the same way. I think it’s from a demo. Very interesting. Any thoughts about where this comes from???

    OH MY GOD!!!!!!!

I just can’t believe it. Even if danny isn’t there, this is HUGE!
I mean, the simple fact of seeing the Oingo Boingo logo, these names under it, and those numbers : 2-0-0-5… I just… don’t know what to say…. Except : What the hell am I doing in Switzerland!?!?!?!??!?!!!!
Man, if they’re doing it, it’s because they want it, and if they want it, this means they’ll have fun, and if they’ll have fun, it just means it’s worth going. I’m sure it’s gonna be great. If I was closer to America, I would really go!!!!

Well. I have one dream project for Elfman & Burton.
I really wish Burton could adapt the short E.T.A. Hoffman story called :

    “The Sand Man”.

It’s a very dark romantic and twisted german tale. The story of a boy who sees his dad being killed in front of his eyes by a guy named Coppola who steals his eyes. Years later, this boy meets a techer called Coppelius. This teacher has a daughter called Olympia, and the boy falls in love with her. Days pass, and the boy finally understands that Coppelius’ daughter is actually a doll, and the reason this girl looks so alive and adorable is because she has his father’s eyes…
Twisted, dark, romantic and soooo burtonish. If you get to read this Hoffman Tale, you’ll automatically have Burton-art in your mind, and elfman-music in your ears…

Well, from what I know, there’s nothing like a Mystic Knights dvd…
I know, those performances in the Farewell dvd footage are awesome…

There are though, some places you will find little but VERY INTRESTING footage.
The first, and the best is the movie FORBIDDEN ZONE, directed by Richard Elfman. The film captures the essence of what the Mystic Knights used to be. There are a lot of special features including Danny singing old jazz stuff (Minnie the moocher, St James Infirmary etc), and a whole “History of the mystic knights” part, with interviews of danny, richard, marie-pascale elfman, matthew bright etc… If you don’t have it, just go buy it, it’s fantastic.

Then, if you go to http://www.stevebartek.com, in the gallery or media section, there’s a little sample of an old Mystic Knights rehearsal. Bad quality, but funny.

There’s also http://www.miriamcutler.com Miriam was part of the Mystic Knights in the early period. In her web site, you might find some funny and old pictures of the band.

If you’re lucky enough, you might be able to find two movies on e-bay :

The first one is “HOT TOMORROWS”, a film based on jazz bands, by Martin Brest. It contains some scenes with The mystic knights singing.

The second one is “I never promised you a rose garden”.

I’ve never seen these two movies, but I’ve heard a lot of the scenes in the Farewell footage come from here.

Hope I helped you. Good luck.
