ParticipantParticipantThis was so good. There were no brass or woodwinds – just a few extra percussionists and tje string section. The last movement is absolutely relentless.
The response was very, very warm and there was an enthusiastic standing ovation at the end. Danny was there (sat three rows ahead of me) and I caught he and Currie being giddy together in the hall when the concerto had finished.
ParticipantRenowned percussionist Colin Currie will take the stage along with an impressive battery of instruments – some specially commissioned by him for the piece – in Elfman’s new Percussion Concerto on March 25 at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Ludwig Wicki will conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra, who jointly commissioned the piece with Soka Performing Arts Center at Soka University. The latter stages the US premiere next month.
The Concerto is cast in four movements – Triangle; D.S.C.H; Down; Syncopated – and promises real spectacle across its 25-minute runtime. In addition to the soloist’s extensive collection of instruments – the score lists 12, including an assortment of pots and pans and a metal ‘gizmo’ – five orchestral percussionists will add to the excitement.

ParticipantParticipantI’ve just listened to the cue several times (on my laptop and my iPod!), and the version is definitely different. The version I have has no choir during the statement of Colette’s theme (or if it’s there, it’s truly buried in the mix), the transition from the circus stuff to the Dumbo stuff runs longer (this version is 4:37 mins) and the mixing just seems different in general. Is this Youtube version the one you all have? I was thinking I was losing it, but it’s 100% different. I bought the CD and ripped it btw.
ParticipantThis version of the last cue is different. Superior in some ways, inferior in others. Film mix?
Score is still terrific btw. Dumbo’s theme is a real keeper.

I’m hoping it all magically works out, because I’m so in for a mostly-electronic original sci-fi movie score from Elfman.
ParticipantI’m wondering if Danny’s off this. It was supposed to be done before Doctor Strange, but now that has recorded/is being recorded and there’s nothing on this. The above article even mentioned that he’s moving onto Wednesday next.

Cumberbatch said that he just finished filming on Saturday, so there’s either going to be another session down the line or Elfman scored to storyboards.

65 hasn’t recorded, this looks like it won’t be recorded for some time and the percussion concerto is still scheduled for March 2022 (tickets are on sale). Something’s gonna have to give, right?

ParticipantApparently this just had a disastrous screening and is about to be completely rethought.
Some guy on YouTube (I know….) had a video up with footage from the movie and he was saying how a screening just went terribly and they’re going to try and fix it, but that a delay is likely.
The plot description he gave matches what Elfman said about it (dinosaurs!). It might also explain why he’s seemingly moved on to Doctor Strange 2.
Hopefully it’s not true….

I’ve definitely overplayed this score (this was probably my favourite score for a good few years), and now I feel like I’m rediscovering it.
On top of the avalanche of extra material (much of which is legitimately great – I normally listen to that stuff once or twice and then forget about it), the sound quality is so much better than the previous release, which could sometimes be a bit overbearing. Like with Planet of the Apes, the quieter cues really improve the listening experience.
ParticipantI like the score in the movie a lot – especially the lovely cue at the end.
It’s not as good as Girl on the Train, no, but that’s top tier Elfman for me.

Seems like it could fit nicely in Elfman’s schedule (I’m assuming this will be a Halloween release), but I imagine the best we’d get is some themes from Elfman, or maybe him scoring the first episode at a push.
