ParticipantWhat a lame oscar’s. Morricone’s award was a little tainted because Eastwood forgot his glasses and couldn’t read the promter – at least he got one, albeit honorary. I was thinking Navarrete’s score for Pan’s Labyrinth would win, but vomit prevailed. At least Scorsese finally got some.

ParticipantThis guy sounds like he made his mind up about Elfman a long time ago. He conveys the same attitude as the “snooty” jealous academic type (not to be confused with the inspiring and interesting academic type – I’ve dealt with both) who think that just because someone didn’t attend Julliard or go to Tanglewood that their musical relevance is niente. I had a composition professor in college – a well respected composer (who got John Williams to play piano on one of his records, and Vincent Price to narrarate his oratorio back in the day – lucky bastad!) whom I considered a great teacher and a fantastic composer. One day I asked him what he thought of Danny Elfman. While he said he couldn’t comment much on Elfman’s music because he hadn’t devoted enough listening to form a valid opinion (I can respect that, he’s not a big film music guy and he didn’t dismiss him right off) he did rehash some of the academic “rumors” about Elfman that I had to squash right there. He’s a hummer. He can’t read. He can’t orchestrate. Blah Blah Blah… This is the kind of crap that circulates in academia. While I think some genuinely aren’t into Elfman’s style, others are just jealous of his success (as a guy with no schooling). It’s like they’re thinking, “I studied with _____________ and ______________ at _______________ and received the ________________ prize for composition, and this guy makes more money than me, had a kick ass band, and has a hot wife”. Oh well. Some people probably just need to pull that stick out of their arse, have a beer and listen to some Zappa. Ok I’m done ranting now.

ParticipantI haven’t heard the Glass score, but even so my money is on Pan’s Labyrinth. I thought it was a good score. Since WIlliams isn’t nominated this year, they’ll probably give it to the less recognized guy, so I think Navarrete has a good chance., considering the hummable (literally) melody that permeates his score. And we’ll see is Yo Yo Ma does another medley or tribute of some sort…. bleh…

ParticipantI would love to see a danny elfman opera… and even though it will never happen, if boingo got back together i’d like to hear the kind of songs he would write now that he’s over 50. i’m sure it would be great….alas….

Participanti just might make the trek. i think the bubba hotep score is awesome. simple, yet awesome. tyler’s got skills, and i like chris young too (elm street 2!). But none compare to Elfman….

Participantcrazy, man… where did you hear the mockups for corpse bride (I haven’t picked up the DVD yet)? The NMBC mock-ups aren’t bad, especially the woodwinds. not bad at all….

ParticipantI think the reason Danny gets alot af crap is because of the whole “self-taught” thing. With MIDI mock-ups these days, alot of composers have a whole team of transcribers, orchestrators, and copyists to smooth things along. I think some people assume that Danny isn’t producing the “final product” because he never went to say, USC School of Music and couldn’t possibly orchestrate himself. It’s kinda rediculous. I heard something along the lines that Mel Brooks just hummed all the melodies for The Producers (not that I’m a fan in any way) to some hired help and received sole credit for book and lyrics… no one seemed to care. As other people have mentioned, his mock-ups are good enough to let you know that he knows what he’s doing. And chances are, these days, not too many composers actually get to orchestrate their own scores anyway (I think Howard Shore sometimes and Elliot Goldenthal do)…. anyway Elfman rules, and in this business, it’s all about the end product, that’s why Danny keeps getting hired.

ParticipantGots my B.M in jazz studies (piano) from SDSU, about to get my M.M. in composition. Pretty good at theory, although it’s a never ending process.

ParticipantIt’s a totally different vein of solo piano, but check out Debussy’s stuff, especially the arabesque’s and Satie’s solo piano stuff (i like the gymnopedie’s)….. if you liked elfman’s forbidden zone piano stuff, it’s totally his tribute to Satie.

Participantsucks you had to take that down D-Bo, I wanted to check it out. Did you arrange it with an ending? Wanted to see if you got a few things I might have missed in the voicings. Oh well…… can you email PDF?

Participantyou should check out the film score guide to batman. in that book there’s a whole chapter on his compositional process and it has quotes from all such magazines (mentioing the keybaord magazine reference, as well as others) and a bibliography if you are that interested in reading the source articles.

Participantprobably not, as they were made for the movie. i doubt elfman has enough free time to finish them up and record them and release it. but who knows? could happen. I’m transcribing victors solo and when i’m done if anyone plays piano and wants it i’ll make it available somehow.

ParticipantWow. Great job. Your vocal inflections are definitely Elfman-like. I think the Heartless Duke is awesome, although I must say one thing: the song has so many Elfman staples (timbre and melodic/harmonic aspects: glock, certain arpeggiations, chord progression – minor third relations, neapolitan) – while it sounds damn good, it is so reminiscent of Elfman that it almost seems like you were purposely going for that – if you were – its cool – great job. I can see you have listened to alot of his stuff and hey- why not – he is the man. Keep up the good work.
