Well ,Remote Control DOESN”T sound like Elfman, so that is basically what I meant, but you are right I should have been more clear, I apologize again.
gordonbluParticipantRyan, all I was saying was at FIRST listen I thought it didn’t sound like Elfman, once i listened to the full album my opinion changed. I have a Love-Hate relationship with samples because sometimes I get whet the composer is going for, like the Serenada sample you posted on cinemusic, and other times i need to hear it in context with the rest of the album, such as this one, I’m very sorry if I offended you, that was not my intent.
gordonbluParticipantIt wasn’t that the samples were bad, it’s just that I wasn’t feeling it, sounded too RC to my ears. On my second listen to the album as a whole, I like it a lot. I wish Fiedel’s theme was in there somewhere to tie all of the films together thematically, but I might change my mind after a few more listens.
We watched the first Terminator tonight in preparation, tomorrow we’ll watch T2, but we’re not going to get a chance to watch T3 before Friday. That’s not a major crisis as the only thing I really loved from T3 was the finale. I thought that was a perfect ending to the “trilogy” as it was final enough to end the franchise and open enough to keep it going.
gordonbluParticipantDone deal. Haven’t had a chance to listen yet. I’m hoping it plays better than the samples suggest.
gordonbluParticipantIt wasn’t Danny’s decision to use Prince on the soundtrack, that was the decision of Mr.Peters and Mr. Guber, the producers. But Danny did adapt Prince’s “Scandalous” into the love theme, probably more for consistency sake than anything else.
gordonbluParticipantI am the first to admit that John William’s is the first thing that pops into my head when I think of Superman, but as for the score itself, it comes across almost silly at times (Williams even stated in an interview on the DVD release that he intentionlly wrote it slightly campy). As for Batman, it never fails to excite, even though it is 20 years old. I appreciated the fact that on this list someone else actually agrees with me and holds the Batman score in higher regard than Superman.
gordonbluParticipantI loved the fact that Brazil was on the list, seeing as that is one of my favorite Kamens scores(along with Baron Munchausen), the Empire Strikes Back definitely needed to be higher on the list.
I ofund it very interesting that Batman was higher than Superman, with which I agree. I don’t think the Score for Superman has aged particularly well, while Batman still sounds fresh. I do like Superman a lot though.
gordonbluParticipantI bought the DVD to explicitly make a CD from the Isolated Score(having already purchased the album and was disappointed by the exclusion of certain cues, but that always happens), but this will definitely be better sound quality! I concur, Black Beauty is another score that DESERVES a re-release. Also Warner Brothers has until June 19 to get their act in gear and release a complete score for Batman(and Returns), otherwise I’ll boycott them.
Well, maybe not boycott, but I’ll crab about it if they don’t.
gordonbluParticipantI’ve been away from the computer for a while, Happy belated Birthday!
April 25, 2009 at 9:50 pm in reply to: Tim Burton and Ray Harryhausen chat: Talk Bernard Herrmann… #64006gordonbluParticipantthere is only one word that can um up the difference between good stop-motion, and bad stop-motion, and that is the word Harryhausen.
I remember seeing films when I was 5 or 7, but on my eleventh birthday TNT was having a “MonsterVision” marathon of Ray Harryhausen’s work. They showed the 7th Voyage of Sinbad and I haven’t been the same since! It had such a profound effect on me. The quality I admire most is as they pointed out in the videos the character he brings to the creatures. When I watch films from the 80’s that have stop-motion, I can see the monster being manipulated by a “technician”. When I watch Harryhausen’s work, I see a fully realized performance.
As for Bernard Herrmann, I’ve always gravitated toward his stuff, again 7th Voyage is my favorite alongside Jason and The Argonauts and The Day the Earth Stood Still. When I was watching the Elfman commentary, I just about died when he said they were his favorites too! I’ve always wondered if I would hit it off with Danny or if I’d drive him crazy, but at least I know that I actually have something in common with him.
gordonbluParticipantI’ve seen all of his Burton Films. I haven’t seen
Notorious
Milk
Wanted
Standard Operating Procedure
The Kingdom
Red Dragon
Proof of Life
Family Man
A Simple Plan
Instinct
Anywhere But Here
Delores Claiborne
Extreme Measures
Article 99
Wisdom
Hot To Trot
Nightbreed
Pure Luck
Forbidden ZoneIn most of the above cases, they are films where my interest was primarily in the score, and the others I just haven’t gotten around to watching yet.
gordonbluParticipantAnd DAD is going, “What about me?”
gordonbluParticipantThat was sweet! The character design reminds me of the short film More that was shown on Sci-Fi’s short-lived exposure series. Is that the final music track? It sadly sounds like a Remote Control score.
gordonbluParticipantI include those because they are adapted from comic books, though you ARE right, they aren’t superheroes. I don’t know though, being able to bend bullets to fly whichever direction you want is pretty super-powerish…
gordonbluParticipantAbsoutely. And the only reason didn’t include Supes IV is because he only wrote themes and not the whole score. If that was part of the quation, then I would have to include the other Superman films because his themes were used. I realize that I am being double sided here because I did mention the Flash though…
gordonbluParticipantGetting back to the original post, Elfman might not do more than two films in a franchise, but he has lasted longer in the superhero genre than anybody, including John Williams. Williams bailed on Superman II leaving Superman the movie as his only superhero score while Danny has done 11 diffierent superhero movies as well as penning the theme to the Flash TV series. No one else can boast that!
gordonbluParticipantI’m not saying I never want to hear electronic music ever again, but overemphasizing it like Hans and his Remote Control buddies(and evry other composer following suit to stay “contemporary”) is like having the entire score done only with the brass section or the string section and not allowing the ENTIRE orchestra to shine.
April 2, 2009 at 5:29 am in reply to: We may get that trilogy after all. MIIIB in development. (Not April Fools) #63873gordonbluParticipantYou never know. They may not get Barry Sonnenfeld back, and the short-lived cartoon series didn’t use his music at all. I never trust hollywood to remain faithful to composers until the film is four weeks away from the release date and even then it could still change.
gordonbluParticipantSadly, electronics are the future, my friend. Don’t get me wrong, I like electronics, but not for every soundtrack that comes out of the film industry. I’m just sick of every action film having to sound like the Rock anymore, and I happen to like the Rock as a score! That is why when someone dares to write a symphonic score I am so extremely jazzed, but even then I notice some electronica interspersed.
April 2, 2009 at 4:19 am in reply to: We may get that trilogy after all. MIIIB in development. (Not April Fools) #63869gordonbluParticipantThis would be nice, if it is true, and providing they have the sense enough to actually pursue Elfman again.
April 2, 2009 at 4:16 am in reply to: Danny Elfman and Sam Raimi Are Friends Again. Elfman to Score Spider-Man 4. #63867gordonbluParticipantI’ll believe it when I see it. I’d like to see it, just like the sigh of relief when Elfman and Burton did in fact make up, but I heard things of this nature during Spider-Man 3 and that was a load of bull.
gordonbluParticipantDidn’t someone do an April Fools last year involving Elfman and Indiana Jones? He must feel so honored to now be a tradition for April Fools!
gordonbluParticipantWho’s taking Woodstock?
Boy is Snoopy gonna be ticked.
Sorry, I’ve had little sleep and lots of caffeine… lethal combination.
gordonbluParticipantMaybe Jackman was trying REALLY hard to impress Danny at the Oscars.
Jackman’s thoughts during musical numbers…
“See? See,Danny? I would make a GREAT Houdini! I’m Magic! Are you Watching me Mr. Elfman? SIR?”gordonbluParticipantIt sounded especially creepy coming from the card!
