ParticipantA very good interpretation, IMO, much better than the one on the recent NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS reissue (name of band escapes me at the moment). Love that you kept the “classical” melodies in the background. Paid lots of respect to the composer’s original sound.
Good work!
Thor
ParticipantA rose and some doll arms? Whazzap up with that? Any interpretations? Could it be a comment on his musical style and “image” – the pretty with the grotesque, i.e. burlesque?
Thor
ParticipantYup, it’s a great interview, like most of Daniel’s (the Horner one he did awhile back was awesome). Check it out!

Thor
ParticipantHey, why no Norway?

I think Zimmer’s BATMAN music is wonderful, and the whole Zimmer/Newton Howard collaboration a very interesting and novel experiment. Believe it or not, but it is actually possible to like BOTH Elfman’s BATMAN music AND the new BATMAN music.
I also think Zimmer is a refreshing voice in interviews. He tells it like it is….in many ways just like Danny does.
Thor
ParticipantI don’t think it sounds anything like SPIDERMAN at all. Perhaps you’re thinking of the first three notes, which has a passing similarity with one bit of Elfman’s theme, but not anything beyond that. I would never have even thought it if you didn’t point it out.
Thor
ParticipantLast.fm has three 30-second clips from SOP up, but somehow, I’m not allowed to post the link here.
Thor
ParticipantYeah, I’m definitely hearing the Elfman/CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY vibe in the credits there. There are also plenty of Bernstein “tributes” in the score proper. I also doubt they’ve paid to use the Ray Parker song. But pretty well-made, altogether, for a fan-made, amateur thing.

ParticipantI haven’t noticed many similarities myself, but Elfman has gone on record many times to state his admiration for the Russian composers, especially Prokofiev.
Thor
ParticipantLooks far more mainstream than Ang Lee’s film, which isn’t necessarily a good thing, but it should be good for some ol’ fashioned entertainment. I’m looking forward to what Craig Armstrong can come up with for this. He’s an excellent composer.
Thor
ParticipantHmmm….of course, I consider THE KINGDOM among his top 10 (as I said earlier), but I also think PROOF OF LIFE is pretty good, at least in the film. It’s somewhat of a tough listen on CD, though. In fact, I can’t think of a genre where he “struggles”. It would have to be if he’s asked to be very “mainstream” or to copy a temp track. There’s also arguably a sameness to some of the more bombastic parts in his recent superhero scores.
Thor
ParticipantI believe there are indeed two versions of this interview. One long and one edited. Right?
Thor
ParticipantAh yes…that’s a contender too. See how difficult it is to make these lists?
Thor
ParticipantIt’s always difficult to post your favourite list, Tender, because it changes all the time. Except for the first 3-4 on this list, all the others are in constant flux. Perhaps I could post a list like this today:
1. The Nightmare Before Christmas
2. Edward Scissorhands
3. Batman
4. Beetlejuice
5. Sommersby
6. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
7. Planet of the Apes
8. Midnight Run
9. Black Beauty
10. The Kingdom…but tomorrow, scores like Batman Returns, Wisdom, Midnight Run, Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure or Big Fish will enter the list somehow.
Thor
ParticipantWell, I’m one of those who think THE KINGDOM is a superb score. In the top 10 Elfman list, for sure. But I agree, it would probably not be suitable for a film like this (which looked promising, although it will give the “hey, that’s impossible” crowd proper ammunition).
Thor
ParticipantThat’s great, Ryan!
Thor
ParticipantNope, that’s not Boingo, I’m afraid. But catchy tune, though!
I agree it’s got some of those ska rhythms and brass riffs that remind one a bit of the Elfman band. Wouldn’t be surprised if Boingo was a major inspiration!
Thor
ParticipantNo need to be sorry. That’s your opinion, and I have mine. But I am still perfectly content with the BEETLEJUICE CD. Then again, I don’t like complete (and chronological) presentations of scores in general.
Thor
ParticipantTwo things:
1. The existing BATMAN and BEETLEJUICE albums are fine the way they are. No expansion needed, IMO.
2. The NMBC reissue was great. Yes, I already had the original album, but I actually thought some of the cover versions were pretty good. Not all, but some. And the demo tracks were an interesting bonus for fans (even though these, too, had been available in bootleg format for a while).

ParticipantVery cool! Thanks for sharing! In the beginning, I was expecting someone to break out in song: “countless long nights while I stare at the wall, I ask myself over again, how did we end up in this living hell, how did it ever begin?….” etc.
Thor
ParticipantThe video has apparently been removed. What was it?
Thor
ParticipantI think he means the Boingo song “Spider”. Or?
Thor
