I’ve got 4 extra programs I think…just send enough postage to send a Playbill program, don’t send the envelope to, Richard Guerin 72 Nelson Street #1R, Brooklyn NY 11231. What’s your name? I will only send a program to the first 3 people.

hmm, I didn’t se this coming! ha! Interesting….well, me being the technical ignoramus that I am, i recorded it with a mini-disc, and seperately with a cassette player. On top of getting cutting off after the 5th movment, the cassette sound quality isn’t so good.
However, the mini-disc quality is great, although I haven’t listen to it all the way through. I will try to figure out how to make a mini-disc a CD, and let you guys know.

    last night ruled.

I tell you it’s awfully exciting to see Danny’s name on the poster on the side of Carnegie Hall, only 9 days to go!

I really liked Azkaban, especially after all the rehashing that went on for the second film. The Village I was good, but it’s too much like Phil Glass’ violin concerto. It’s hard to award unoriginality. The Passion didn’t do much for me, however I do like Finding Neverland. Eternal Sunshine has a great score, but I think Brion is too unorthodox for the Academy.
I particulary liked Alexanre Desplat’s score for Birth.

what difference does it make? you give the same sketches to 5 different orchestrators and you will get five different sounding pieces. In the studio, Elfman produces, and makes it come out the way he want it. In the concert hall, it’s supposed to be prepared before the performance.

Elfman’s not dumb. He knows what he’s gotten into and it’s probably exciting him. With all of the super-hero movies and maybe turning fifty recently, he’s looking for new challenges. good for him. David Newman is premiering a piece with Indiana, and he usues orchestrators, Don Davis writes lots of concert music, and he uses orchestrators for his films, so does Williams. I HOPE and expect that Elfman will orchestrate himself. I know he is a composer, but he writes his way and I’m excited about the electronics element….anyway, I suppoe we’ll see.

I can’t wait. I’m broke but I was not going to miss this. The ACO usually doesn’t drwa a crowd so even if you’re worried, you can easily score tickets outside Carnegie for 10 bucks. I should have gone ahead and got the good seats, but the cheapies will do me just fine.
I hope he attends his premiere.

I thought there were plenty of good scores in ’04. I wasn’t that crazy about SM2, but the Aviator is good, and for action/bombast Skycaptain was interesting. Neverland was quite nice…It just seemed like a year for smaller names, although I did love Williams’ Azkaban.

come to NYC ryan…you know you should. If it doesn’t come out on CD, then you will have missed it, and that would drive you mad. I mean this could be a one time only time performance. I’m not advocating bootlegs, so this is it.
And the sad part for me is I just moved to NYC from Boston, and had I been there, I’m not sure I would have made the trip down to hear it.

you can get all the info you need on Carnegie Hall’s website search for American Composers Orchestra.
I wonder if he’ll be there…I would suspect yes as most of the time composers show up for the World Premiere, and especially since this is Danny’s first commission for the concert hall.
There are still tix available, I can’t wait.

On the other hand…Silva Screens has good recordings of cues from Edward and a really cool re-recording of Mars Attacks! with differnts synths. I like them both.
I guess some of Elfman’s really new stuff couldn’t possibley be replicated well. Planet of the Apes and Hulf for example. Although I would love to hear new interpretations with different tempos for Sommersby and Big Fish…

anyone got an orchestra and a recording studio just lying around?

I don’t have that CD but I listened to the interesting parts (i.e. Sleepy Hollow) in the store.
I constantly talk about this, and it doesn’t matter to a lot of film music fans, but the re-recording of Sleepy Hollow here doesn’t sound ANYTHING like the original soundtrack. I’m not talking about arrangements of the themes, I’m talking about the themes themselves only vaguely resemble the Elfman produced album.
My question is, I know that it is sort of make it up as you go along in the recording studio as you are producing the music, so why can they not produce a written score that captures the orchestration used in the movie?
Lord of the Rings has the original Shore orchestration, and recordings since the original sound wodnerfully like Shore intention.
I have heard all sorts of vagueries in re-recordings of Elfman’s work, and I guess I just wish there was more emphasis on posterity.

why is this the new hollywood big budget blockbuster way of doing business? I know the accountants like to meddle with the films, but why with the soundtrack?? I mean, John Williams score to Episode 2 was similarly butchered, and to what effect?
The only film composer I ever heard speak to this was Randy Newman. He was funny, as usual, and he was talking about Seabiscuit…not exactly Spidey 2 or Star Wars, but anyway he talked about trying to do your best, and often the films are temp scored and the diretors/producers fall in love with the temp score…so few people actually CARE about the music, why don’t they permit the people who do it as a living, the experts, do what they do best. And I know Denbey and Young were just trying to help out or whatever, but it really sucks that executive producers get together and decide to change music.

If I was directing or producing, I don’t know whom I would want to compose if I couldn’t have danny. I don’t kow how to feel about either Zimmer or Newton Howard. I like “the Village” but it’s nothing new, it’s just a philip glass rip-off with the arpeggios and standard progressions, and zimmer hasn’t done much interesting in my opinion since Thin Red Line/Gladiator days(though I haven’t heard/seen the Ring) -although I keep buying anyway.
I read somewhere recently that Howard wanted to collaborate with Zimmer, and it was supposed to happen before but didn’t. Anyway, I think it could be interesting. But I’m still holding out that there is in-fighting and the whole thing falls apart and they call in Danny Last minute (a la Hulk).

what’s the deal with Ottman being an editor too??? It’s strange to me…plus coordinating it during post production must be tough, so who wants to do it? Unless he writes the bulk of his score during production. anyone?
