Unfortunately, the only movie Danny Elfman scored in 1987 was Summer School. So pretty much everyone did better than Elfman that year. Nonetheless, going over 1987, my favorite scores are:

Beverly Hills Cop II – Harold Faltermeyer
Empire of the Sun – John Williams
    Lethal Weapon – Michael Kamen
The Living Daylights – John Barry
    Predator – Alan Silvestri
    Raising Arizona – Carter Burwell
    Robocop – Basil Poledouris
    The Untouchables – Ennio Morricone

1985 – Call me crazy but I really love Jerry Goldsmith’s music for the Rambo “trilogy.” Of the three movies, I think everyone’s favorite is First Blood from 1982 but I also enjoy Rambo and Rambo III. What do you guys think?

1988 – The Naked Gun music. Iconic?
1989 – Michael Kamen scores a James Bond movie. Good or nah?
1990 – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Good score or nah?
    1992 – Bram Stoker’s Dracula music. Classic?
1993 – In the Line of Fire. Great American score from Ennio Morricone?
1994 – The Lion King. Iconic?
1996 – The Rock. Good score or nah?
1997 – L.A. Confidential. Good score or nah?
1999 – The Sixth Sense. Good score or nah?
2001 – Harry Potter. One of the last great John Williams scores?
2003 – Pirates of the Caribbean. Good score or nah?
2004 – Pixar’s The Incredibles. Good score or nah?
2005 – King Kong. Good score or nah?
2008 – Slumdog Millionaire. Good score or nah?
2009 – Twilight: New Moon. Good score or nah?
2010 – Tron: Legacy. Good score or nah?
2012 – The Amazing Spider-Man. Good score or nah?

Yeah, but this is the first time the show will air 24 hours a day for 12 straight days in U.S. soil. Danny Elfman must be making thousands, if not millions, for this marathon. Not to the mention the actors and writers and producers. Anyone involved with The Simpsons is making big bucks these next two weeks. Then comes the on-demand episodes in September. The first time all 552 episodes will be legally available for streaming. Danny Elfman could just retire and live off of Simpsons money right now.

Tim Burton would have always done Sleepy Hollow. It would have just been released in 2000 or 2001 instead of 1999. But you’re right. He would have never directed Planet of the Apes. And I’m actually okay with that. His “re-imagining” is the black sheep of the franchise. So, I would gladly take Superman Lives over Planet of the Apes. I mean, look, even if the movie had sucked it would have still been better than Superman III, Superman IV, Superman Returns and even Man of Steel.

Heartbreakers and Freeway? You’re way off. Dolores Claiborne is a better indication:

“Superman Lives” was scheduled for released in June of 1998. It would have been the follow-up to his double Academy Award nominations. In fact, the only scores Danny Elfman ended up scoring in 1998 were “A Simple Plan” and “A Civil Action” which were both small films released at the end of the year. So you can tell he reserved space to work on what would have been a gigantic score for Superman.

No one should be surprised. Danny Elfman is a big fan of “Flight of the Conchords” which James Bobin was involved in.

No offense to LaLa, they do good work, but this IS great news. Releasing it on iTunes gives it more exposure.

Can you imagine the Danny Elfman score we could have gotten?

in reply to: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children #67972

“Alice 2” is being directed by James Bobin (The Muppets) and has a May 2016 release date. Danny Elfman can do both. As for Peregrine, I still think that April made more sense. This March release date is risky because it’s only a week before the World Of Warcraft movie, which is being directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code).

The Van Sant style wouldn’t make sense for the erotic scenes.

Fox could squeeze it in November 2015 if they REALLY wanted to, but the most logical release date would be April 2016. And if Burton plans on doing “Beetlejuice 2”, he has 2018 which is the 30th anniversary of the first movie.

in reply to: Fifty Shades of Grey #67907

No. I think it’ll be a contemporary Sommersby. In that movie, Jodie Foster discovers that her husband is an impostor so Danny Elfman wrote a score that combines romance with mystery. That style of music fits perfectly for Fifty Shades Of Grey because it’s the story of a woman who falls in love with a guy who’s into “dirty s-e-x.” Now what will be interesting to hear is how Elfman tackles the erotic scenes. He has never written music like that. The closest, that I can think of, is the fetish-y Catwoman stuff in Batman Returns but that’s a different beast.

in reply to: Fifty Shades of Grey #67919

I can see why they hired Danny Elfman. 1993’s Sommersby is a good example of what we may get, except more modern and with Elfman’s current style. However, I am more intrigued by the erotic scenes. Danny Elfman has never written anything like that. He has also never scored a movie that’s borderline NC-17. This is exciting to be honest. Danny Elfman is exploring a new territory and I can’t wait to hear what he creates.

I’m on the same boat. I discovered this site in 2001 or 2002, but I didn’t join the message board till 2007 (before Spider-Man 3) because of my schedule. Although, I was almost tempted in the summer of 2004 because of the hysteria surrounding the Spider-Man 2 score. I remember checking Ryan’s news section almost everyday that summer for some update or explanation about what the heck happened.

On a side note, I remember when DannyBiker uploaded the videos with Danny Elfman’s original music on YouTube. I shared them on every social media and message board I was a member of at the time. It’s a shame those videos are gone now.

June 30, 2004 is a date that Danny Elfman fans will always remember. And it was not simply because Danny Elfman’s score to Spider-Man 2 was butchered by a long list of people, but because of the confusion of what happened. 10 years later, we know exactly what happened but at the time – as you can see from this thread – we were all going crazy.

Prince’s album was released in the United States on June 20th (3 days before the movie). And Danny Elfman’s album was released on August 8th (6 weeks after the movie debut in theaters).

Can you believe Danny Elfman turns 60 at the end of the month? Crazy.

Wow! It DOES sound like John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams, and all those Hans Zimmer cronies. I guess if you can’t beat them then join them.

in reply to: Elfman Back with Raimi for ‘Oz’? #39112

I heard the score before watching the movie and enjoyed it. But I finally watched the film last week, and now, I absolutely love the score. Danny did a great job. I think I might like it more than Alice in Wonderland. Alice has the better thematic material but the music in Oz works better within the context of the movie.

Who’s scoring the Carrie remake, which is scheduled for release in October? That could be a promising Elfman project. Or perhaps Enders Game.

Big Eyes, not to be confused with Big Fish.
