    That sucks!!
Well us Texas folks have the Alamo Draft House!.. I think there are a few around the SW but it started here. We get to see some older films sometimes.. last year I saw Psycho(1960) and it was fraking awesome!.. maybe they’ll play Batman someday… probably when I’m in college though!
    I’m still jealous!

I didn’t say the piece isn’t powerful or affective… I’m just sayin.. when it pops up on my iPod, sadly I hit next so I can sway with “Waltz To The Death”. I was just jokin’.. And Im sure you’re not boring : )

Wow.. It’s funny to hear a lot of you being big Elfman fans in like the 80s and 90s. I wasn’t born until ’91 but it’s cool to hear it.

I didn’t get into music until 6th grade when I joined band! I was put on trombone and my director made me listen to some music. My friends were getting into NIGHTMARE so I of course followed. My mom soon bought me the soundtrack from Hastings and so I thought I would look into him. I asked my parents and they gave me the most general definition of Danny Elfman they knew(they didn’t really know) so I looked myself! Soon after that I got a present from my parents… another CD from Hastings…. Music for a Darkened Theatre Volume 1. On the way home, listening to it on the CD player in the car my dad fast forwarded it through “Up the Cathedral” cause it was boring(you all agree, no one likes that song enough to listen to it on its own). Then it got to “Decent into Mystery” and I sat there in chills. That did it for me!

5 years later, I’m still playing Trombone.. well.. Bass Trombone… in the top band at my high school. All of my friends make fun of me for my obsession! And I’m taking piano lessons! I have a lot of soundtracks including Ottman, Newman, Herrmann, and Williams… But it all started with Elfman and Batman.. well..”Decent into Mystery” to be exact!

So when it comes to reading a lot of your Elfman histories from the 80s and 90s, many of you said Batman. I may be younger… but.. I still find it funny that one score can have such a huge impact on so many people! I love Elfman’s music! And I will always love it.

Uh.. I hated the movie… I left the theater saying “OH MY GOD! That ending sucked!” The movie-as a whole-was cheesey!

Well.. I liked the Oscars this year.. but then again I like Broadway shows…It was a little Broadway-ish … and I’m sure Elfman got a good look at his supposed star of his Houdini show… which I hope does well and actually hits Broadway theatres.

yeah… I just listened… At first it does sound like Elfman, but you come to realize the style is very different and the song writing technique is as well.. Elfman tends to use ostinato patters, whereas this composer is more straight forward. I know I can’t really judge a lot because I haven’t actually seen the movie(which I’m dying to see) but from the clips I’ve heard it is very different.. The only similarity is that they are both dark and creepy… I dunno.. maybe I’m wrong.

I agree.. also I’m glad Goldenthal talked Schumaker out of the idea of using Elfman’s theme… It totally would not have worked in that campy film!

Really.. I loved Kingdom… Not the score alone, but it fit the movie very well.. Elfman made it different and it was a cool melodic score.. It’s not really interesting to listen to on your iPod as opposed to somethin’ like, lets say, Batman is.. but according to the film, I think it was great… thinking back to the movie itself, I wouldn’t want anything different.

Now…. Don’t get me wrong.. I love Elfman’s writing… But… To say he is the best Jazz writer of Today would be a big stretch… He knows his stuff… But there are so many people alive today that just do Jazz for a living… Elfman is just a footnote in the Jazz composing world… I apologize for offending anyone but it’s kinda true.. You may have stretched it, Nick, a little to far.. at least for my opinion.. Elfman is still My FAVORITE composer… but not the best Jazz writer.

It’ll probably be another year where they have cameras on all the other nominees and a stock photo of Danny to represent him… right?

No.. I think he will be there… I think he’s a member of the Academy. So it wouldn’t be in good taste to not show up!.

Yeah… I’m not gonna root for Ledger… There’s no point.. He WILL win. You don’t really need to hope for him… (If he doesn’t, then I will laugh!)

So, you don’t really need to hope for him… It’s Elfman that needs it.. Not that he wants it… Or that there is a chance he will win… I loved MILK but… I don’t really feel optomistic for the score to go all the way!

Sorry about my pessimism… But… Oh well.

I just hope Star Trek is nothing close to Goldsmith… Elfman didn’t do Goldsmith for Planet of the Apes.. so I guess Giacchino shouldn’t either
