ParticipantThis ain’t no NBX.
Few movies are.

ParticipantWell, there’s only popular opinion that’s going to rule on this one, and the reviews are mixed, wether it be Wagnerian or not…
Are you talking about Nightmare or Corpse Bride? Corpse Bride is well-reviewed.
Still an unoriginal piece of work as far as i’m concerned.
What have you done differently?
The Wedding Song and Making Christmas are very comperable.
No there not! Can you back this up at all?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantThose comparisons are kind of vague: the Main character goes off to the woods and encounters a world beyond his imagination? You could find the same parallels in North by Northwest, or Rules of the Game (ha, ha, just kidding, well, kind of.)
“Making Christmas”-type song…
A Making Christmas-type song? Which one would that be?
At any event, musically, Corpse Bride is an altogether different animal.
Nightmare is completely Wagnerian, in that the themes/songs are interweaved all throughout the score. The leitmotif is so impressive; often enough, we only hear fragments of the 9 themes, as opposed to Corpse Bride, which is almost mono-thematic. There’s a single, strong theme that is heard in nearly every cue. Secondary themes, like Emily’s and so on, are used sparingly and economially.
Even the orchestral color differs some: Nightmare has far more a fairytale slant to it — with the celeste played frequently — where Corpse Bride is more Victorian, and is identified more with the harpsichord and organ.

ParticipantWell…NBX set the high watermark. Corpse Bride falls well below it. Really, if you look at it, it’s not very inspired, the storyline is the same…
In what way?
…the characters are the same…
In what way?
…and the music mirrors the same…
In what way?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantNo Dale Turner?

ParticipantI love the Moon Dance, too. The voices are very old school — if you forgive the nomenclature — in that it sounds like vintage, Disney, 40s choir — very harmonious and beautiful stuff, there.
(The quotation from Gone with the Wind was really cute, too, although, that didn’t get on the album.)

ParticipantCiting your text is for clarity, and is not meant to project animosities toward you or anyone. It’s just a helpful tool — I think.
My opinion still stands. If it doesn’t fit your high-and-mighty opinion, that’s your business.
Here’s my problem with your opinion: I don’t understand it. Help me out. In what way is Corpse Bride so similar to Nightmare that it could possibly be considered a cheap bastardization? Give examples.

ParticipantI know! I hate Danny’s insipid, banal, derivative music. You think that I would make better use of my time rather than talking about it dubiously on message boards.
…there’s no real theme because it sounds too much LIKE Charlie and Frighteners, Sleepy Hollow…
So, it’s not a theme anymore if you think it sounds like another?
…cheap bastardization of NBX.
A cheap bastardization? Really? In what way, in that they’re both scored with an orchestra?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantI thought the songs tried too hard, were more OINGO BOINGO-like in rhythm and rhyming scheme and less Dr. Suess-like as in NBX. I didn’t catch a THEME – at least nothing as obvious as NBX or even Charlie’s CoCa Factory.
If you can’t catch a theme in Corpse Bride, you are RETARDED. I’m sorry, but that’s the nicest way I can respond to such nonsense.

Participant20 years ago they could have never made corpse bride, spielberg could have made war of the worlds.
Well, theoretically, they could have made Corpse Bride then. Burton did make Vincent years prior to Pee-wee.
Corpse Bride, however, would just be a lot different (no Johnny Depp, digital effect, and so on.) Though, it would have been feasible.

ParticipantNot exactly songs you’d want to advertise to people you actually listen to on a regular basis…
Well, it’s a soundtrack. It’s advertised to people who like the music from the movie.

ParticipantDanny’s gonna get his ass kicked.
TenderLumpling
ParticipantYeah, is there a list somewhere that displays what selected theaters Corpse Bride will be playing at?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantNot since The Nightmare Before Christmas has Patrick Stewart spoken such beautiful Danny Elfman lyrics.
TenderLumpling
ParticipantI hope someone shot some nice footage at the Corpse Bride press conference.
TenderLumpling
ParticipantAn isolated scoe would be nice! They dont do it enough! They did it on Planet of the apes and that was nice. They should do it more!
Do they even make isolated film scores for DVD’s anymore?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantThat was there before, if I remember.
The scatting was there before? Who are you talking to?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantThe vocals seem to be the same between both versions.
Actually, the vocals are a bit different. Danny’s scatting in Remains of the Day, for example.
TenderLumpling
ParticipantPersonally, I like all the songs except for “Tears To Shed,” which leaves me a bit cold.
Is it the Peter Lorre voice?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantMuch nicer with the real orchestra. I just hope the voices don’t get too drowned in the movie, because they’re kinda hard to hear.
I think it sounds fine. Lightyear’s ahead of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Meaning, the Charlie score-album sounds fine, but the score-dub for the film is almost inaudible at times, particularly for Violet Beauregarde cue — I couldn’t hear a damn lyric.
Then again, that just might be a quality of the inhabitants of in the Underworld. As for “According to Plan,” does it sound a bit broadway-like, which he said he hated?
Danny doesn’t like anything to come out of Broadway since West Side Story. According to Plan — at least to my ears — sounds like something from the 40s.
TenderLumpling
ParticipantOh, and he hates Broadway? I guess that throws the chances of a NBC Broadway show out of the window.
He hates contemporary Broadway.
TenderLumpling
ParticipantUm, why to you need Danny Elfman’s address? Hmmm?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantAbout the 1998 interview — has anyone ever been able to track down some of the pieces that they played on the show?
TenderLumpling
ParticipantUnbelievable…
