Planet Terror was POPCORN.
Death Proof was A RIDE!
And that’s not all I’ll say…… Kurt Russell wasn’t wasted, it’s his best movie since Big Trouble in Little China.
NatreboParticipantI agree with you Monsterhead…
It was one of the Most entertaining times I’ve ever had a theater!
Planet Terror was the popcorn, and Death Proof was the fun ride… an amusement park at the movies!
If you are thinking of replying to my post….
DON’T!!!!!!!
NatreboParticipantI guess I can see it, after all there has already been a Superman musical.
NatreboParticipantI guess I’m too much of a stickler for creative control, and not just rehashing something that we have already seen.
It wouldn’t bother me at all if it was completely different as long as it was good.
But that’s me, and I’m wrong!
NatreboParticipantWould you also say that Ian Holm (sp?) should play Bilbo ?
I would Love to see another person interpret this material. I wouldn’t want to be restrained if I had a different idea for the material. If I thought it was important for my vision I would use it, but then and only then. Kind of like how Singer handled Superman. He grew up with John Williams defining the sound of Superman, so he thought It would be wrong to go with something else. But if Tim Burton got that movie, do you think HE would have kept the John Williams’ theme? Let the filmmaker decide and then decided, we already have some wonderful music from Shore. Unless Shore himself were to do “The Hobbit”, I don’t think I would deny a creative “re-imagining” of Tolken’s world.
NatreboParticipantIt has changed a lot since 1990 as you pointed out. With what film editing has become today, less and less time have been given to composers, so they have to make cuts somewhere, and if that means hiring more orchestrators, then that’s what they have to do. I used to remember when a film composer had so much time that just about every trailer I saw in the theater had music from that film. Rarely, unless it’s a song driven score, do you find that today. Usually because the composer hasn’t even recorded the score before the first trailers start to come out. They way a movie (a Hollywood movie at least) is made has change drastically over the last 20 years – so much technology, and also so much control by suits because of the amount of money involved. I really miss all of the smaller movies that used to come out of Hollywood, but I breath a sigh of relief for the flourishing independent film makers.
NatreboParticipantAlso time constraints for composers have gotten greater, so there is less time between witting and recording a score so the orchestrators have less time to prepare the score for the recording. It’s all about time, and money saved by the studio to meet a preset release date for theaters.
NatreboParticipantJeff Rona also used to write a scoring column in Keyboard Magazine back in the day called “the reel world” (I think that was the name of it?). It was very informative and even step through his process when he was working on White Squall.
Also of note, before Keyboard Magazine had a complete overhaul a few years ago, Danny was listed as something on the publisher’s page. Can’t remember right now what it was, but as soon as I can dig out my old issues back at home I’ll let ya’ll know… or maybe someone on here can help me?
NatreboParticipantI’ve never been a fan of elitist. (kidding of course)
Still love Linux!!!!!
The Bastard Child of OS’s.
NatreboParticipantFidelity was the first song I heard of her’s too, and I listed to that and On the Radio from the same “Begin to Hope” CD over and over again when I got it. From that CD I also love “Apres Moi”!
I also have her “Soviet Kisch” CD that contain the wonderful song Us on it.
I guess I’m behind the times because I don’t own an iPod or an MP3 player, however I do have a Walkman CD player that plays MP3 discs.
Of the recent CDs that I’ve been listening to:
Soviet Kitsch – Regina Spector
The Hidden Land – Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Charlotte’s Web – Elfman of course (I got this when it came out, but I’ve been playing it all the way through at least 4 times a week since then)
Ainadamar (Opera) – Osvaldo Golijov
Are Me – Barenaked Ladies
rejected score to 2001 – Alex North
SupersunnySpeedgraphic, the lp – Ben Folds
The Dharma at Big Sur – John Adams
Pan’s Labyrinth – Javier Navarrete (if I had the vote, I would give the Oscar to this score, but I haven’t seen Desplat’s or Glass’ contributions in their proper contexts yet)
The Queen – Alexandre Desplat
Notes on a Scandal – Philip Glass
Dragon Songs – Lang Lang (Pianist)
Troll – Richard Band
Dvorak Tone Poems – Conducted by Simon Rattle
Absolutely – Sister HazelI’ve also been listening to a lot of Podcasts I found on iTunes like…
They Now – a They Might be Giants fan cast
They Might be Giants official podcast
Coverville
and many Film score and Classical Music Podcasts… and oh yea, Danny Elfman Rules!!!!
NatreboParticipantHey Lucius,
Nice to see another Regina Spektor fan on here. I just came across her music in the last year and now own her latest CDs. Which ones do you listen too, and is her early stuff as good or, dare I say, better?
NatreboParticipantThis reminds me that I might live long enough to see a Star Wars Remake…
After all it took them about 45 years to remake the classic King Kong.
Can you image them Remaking A New Hope? At least they won’t remake “Halloween”…
Oh wait…
THEY ARE!!!!
NatreboParticipantYES!!!!
My favorite Band and my favorite Film Composer finally unite!!!!!!
Can’t wait, but do I smell another song heavy Disney release without much score?
I hope that’s not the case!
Thanks for the news Ryan!
NatreboParticipantI was going to mention that Ryan, but I thought about it and said, “why ruin the illusion of originality…” Still it works in the movie.
NatreboParticipantI know he gets nominated a lot (every time he writes something for that year of eligibility), but when was the last time that John Williams actually won an Oscar?
January 4, 2007 at 4:17 am in reply to: BORAT will indeed co-star in Sweeney Todd… BUT will he SING? #57945NatreboParticipantAlso check out his singing in Madagascar as King Julian!!!!
NatreboParticipantI held off on my Opinion for a week just because I wanted the New-ness of it to set in, and…
Yes sir, I think I like it! (not that my opinion really counts)
Great job Ryan…
You are the Man! You have done a lot for us Elfman Freaks!
Thanks again!
NatreboParticipantWell, I’m still a kid and I hope I never grow up. The Grown up world today isn’t much to shake a stick at. I have to say I do love Traditional Animation for, but I also love the process (having done a few 3D as well as Traditional animated films myself). The films work better when they are made by BIG kids for little kids, and PIXAR is nothing but a big playground.
But like I said before in another post, I really don’t know much…
… I’m just a kid after all… remember?
NatreboParticipantIt’s Nice to know that John Lasetter (sp?) is now head of animation at Disney. Of the last 20 years the best animated films has been from Pixar, and Brad Bird… Iron Giant is a great achievement! There has been a few films from Disney that did have great things in them (Atlantis particularly, and even Dinosaur) but they failed in maintaining those things. Pixar has that ability, and no studio recently has had their run of financial and critical success.
But I am a big Randy Newman fan, so what do I know?
NatreboParticipantI thought he was comparing Sharks Tale to Cars…?
I guess I read it wrong.
NatreboParticipantThere are many conductors, past and present, that never used a baton when they conducted. It’s not a prerequisite to being a conductor. Still I think you might be right about them not using that take, because surely they did a few takes without him conducting.
NatreboParticipantJust check it again at screen archives and now they have a few samples that sound Orchestral. I guess when they perform it other places it might rely on synths, but this is the Orchestral London Stage Premier Recording.
Then again, what do I know.
NatreboParticipantRight you are… he after all wrote the Best Bond score over the last 10 years for a non-Bond film.
NatreboParticipant“Anyone in the world can click on that and view the list.”
How about if your running Window’s 98? You have to have iTunes which isn’t available to Window 98 users.
NatreboParticipantFunny because they use his cue for the DVD Menu.
