ParticipantDon’t worry about electronics. Danny Elfman makes wonderful use of them among an orchestral score. Look at Spider-Man and Hulk.

ParticipantHow does he manage to squeeze in so many side projects–and we don’t even know about them until after they have aired? I’m not really interested in shows like that (24 is for me) but I’ll take a look when it’s on next to hear the theme. Just like I did for Desperate Housewives…

ParticipantEXCELLENT! It does sadden me to see Johnny Depp’s characters crashing into so many things recently, but hell, it looks fun! I can’t wait to hear wat Danny’s cooking up for this one.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantAs far as I’ve heard about the next movie, Danny’s interested in returning.

ParticipantI found the basis for Polar Express. Listen to John Debney’s “Elf” score. I mean, exact same notes. Maybe different instruments, but same notes. I like Debney and Silvestri, so I’m not going to go further.

ParticipantWill he at least still be smiling?!

ParticipantOf course I thought that Spider-Man 2 had the best score this year…look at my username! But you are right, the organizations will base their opinions on every aspect of a movie on how they liked it overall. Frankly, Good Will Hunting is very average compared to Danny’s other work, but the Academy loved that it was for Good Will Hunting.
Spider-Man 2 will not likely be recognized for any awards primarily because the movie contained recycled music and music from other composers. That REALLY sucks because the music that Danny wrote, whether or not in the movie, is absolutely outstanding. Thematic, powerful, appropriate, it’s truly a great score. I guess Sony can take the blame for this and apologize by pumping a huge budget in music for Spider-Man 3, which Danny has to score.

ParticipantI once sat down and had a nice chat with one of the producers of Darkman. He later went on to produce the Xena and Hercules series. But anyway…I loved Darkman. 1990 a favorite year of mine, with Dick Tracy and Edward Scissorhands in that same year. I loved all of those scores.

ParticipantI have no excuse. My apologies. But…are we allowed to get excited when his baby is born?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantWow! I know it’s wrong of us to prod into his personal life, but it’s nice to see his family out and about. Quite attractive offspring, I must say. I’m sure that, especially with Bridget Fonda’s good looks, the oncoming baby is going to be a cute lil’ thing.
And by the way, I think that’s Molly Elfman.

ParticipantThough I haven’t heard much of it, the bits I’ve heard from the Aviator score are pretty good. And damned if Clint Eastwood is gonna go and win a Golden Globe for best score. I don’t think 2004 was much of an achievement year for film scores, and Shore’s Aviator probably best deserved the award.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantCool! Would anyone happen to have that as an audio file, perhaps?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI think Danny’s pretty tight with Thomas Newman. I doubt that he mingles too often with some of the more classic composers, as he seems like more of a party animal with a different style. Besides, there’s much to envy out of Danny Elfman, him being such a great composer and all.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI re-watched that interview, and I stand by “indirect.”
Spider-Fan
ParticipantAre YOU a buddy of Howard Shore? I mean, as moderator of the Filmmusic sites, do you get to chill with a bunch of cool composers?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantHe doesn’t state it specifically, but he does refer to how he’s not into the way that Danny Elfman composes using computer software. It really doesn’t sound so direct to me.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI’ve heard of this feud before. Me, I’m a big fan of both composers and it saddens me that there could be some animosity between them. I’ve actually arranged for John to answer a few questions of mine for my school newspaper, so perhaps I’ll sneak that question by him.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantYeah, it was mentioned, but I think it really is a good use of the PotA score.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantYeah, I noticed the similarity as well. I’m not crazy about the show but it can be cool at times.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantThat’s okay by me, as long as he doesn’t hum his music while walking down the street in the city or something. I saw some “prodigy” composer kid doing that on “60 Minutes” and it was absolutely hysterical. The funniest thing was that all these people were praising him for his ability to compose a piece in a few minutes using Danny-like software, and then they show the ochestra playing it and it’s terrible. It’s like he didn’t bother to make the notes work together, butrather he just threw them together and gets called a genius. Sorry I got a bit sidetracked, but I thought I ought to share it.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantWow, that’s pretty interesting. That you put all those together is really good investigative work. I certainly have high expectations for the next 2 Burtons, considering he’s devoted so much time to them. I just hope he finishes in time to properly corrupt his incoming baby’s mind.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantWell, he is Jewish by birth, and though he might not practice the religion, the culture always stays with you. Believe me, I know. Yiddish has to be the trademark and you can do some really funny stuff with it.

ParticipantIn case this topic gets resurrected, I’ve just discovered a great site that lists several Disney composers and their work.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantLooks like Johnny Depp! Beautiful hear on that figure. Looks like a well-sculpted movie.

ParticipantI didn’t even know about that NBC game! I looked up some screenshots and they’ve done pretty well. I’m not going to shell over 50 bucks for it though. If Danny Elfman decides to compose a new suite for the game, it would make many people very happy, myself included. After all, Fable was pretty satisfying, and NBC already has an established fanbase. We’ll see I guess.
