ParticipantI just realized that today. In some cues, there’s a synth bass that is mixed waaaay too heavily and it just bursts your ears.
Maybe it works fine on the theater’s subwoofers but at home, it’s just so loud that it covers most of the instruments. A perfect exemple is the second part of the end credits, between 0.55 and 1.16. There’s this loud “woooooooom” going on below every single chord. It works fine on small speakers but whenever you play it on a full range sound system, it’s just too much.
I’m surprised they didn’t do a better mastering for the album.boingomusic
ParticipantThe album is out on Spotify.
And it’s pretty much a mix of everything that made me love Elfman’s music.
The main music box theme reminds me of Corpse Bride and Edward Scissorhands. While the action scenes are remeniscent of Hellboy II and Nightbreed. And of course, you can hear The Wolfman and Killar’s Dracula all along. Nice score.boingomusic
ParticipantCould this be part of Elfman’s music?
The second part sounds very similar to his style. Maybe a demo they used for the preview? What do you think?boingomusic
ParticipantWell, the french poster lists Elfman and Bacon in the credits.

ParticipantOhhhh Batman Returns…
Probably one of my favorite movies ever. Made me realize how I loved Christmas, and how I loved dark Christmas movies. And at the time, I only owned two scores : Hook, and Batman Returns. And thought it was normal for a movie to have so many different amazing themes. I don’t think many movies have such a wide variety of beautiful, memorable melodic themes.boingomusic
Participant“Everybody loves you” is such an amazing song. And the second part is pure Boingo 😍
Love itboingomusic
ParticipantHaha Ryan,
It did the exact same thing to me. Actually, I heard this Prokofiev piece played live in concert in the late 90’s, at a time when the Black Beauty score was hard to find on cd. So I bought this cd instead, That was the closest I could get!I later realized that Elfman had litteraly used parts of Lieutenant Kijé when he performed with the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo.
You can hear parts of this here, at 2:38So, Elfman was definitely inspired by this!

ParticipantThank you so much 9fingeredElf !
So, Danny’s planning a solo album, with some very aggressive music !!!
He says he’s going to record this with his Coachella band.
I still feel kind of bad for the rest of the Boingo band. They’ve been doing their best to keep the Boingo spirit alive for the past 15 years. Steve Bartek still plays with them. And Danny kept saying he couldn’t do it because of his hearing loss. And now, he records an album with new material, goes back on stage at Coachella, but still chooses to ignore his ex-band, except for Steve who’s in the middle of all this, playing with Danny, but still performing with the Boingo former members.I don’t understand why he’s so opposed to bringing them back, specially when he plans to perform old Boingo songs.
I mean… It’s obvious it would please the fans, and I know Vatos, Phipps, Avila and the rest of the band would be more than HAPPY to do it.boingomusic
ParticipantI missed it. I thought it would stay online…
Has anyone recorded it? If so, maybe a Dropbox link or a Wetransfer link could be nice 🤓

ParticipantWell… I expected this to happen. Coachella is canceled and postponed to October.

ParticipantWell, Steve Bartek told me he was not in Paris during the Elfman week-end because he had to stay in LA working on Doolittle. That was three weeks ago. So, at least we know Elfman is done writing the music.

ParticipantHaha, that was a nice question, Danny Biker. Wow, I felt so uncomfortable when they asked that Spider-Man theme question. It made no sense. And Danny didn’t know what to do with it. 😅
The concert tonight was unbelievable. By far the best performance EVER of his Batman suite. It was insane. I’ve heard it at least 6 times with different orchestras. But this one was Magnificent.
I wonder if they changed something with the orchestrations. It was bolder, and the balance between the violins and the violas seemed different.September 14, 2019 at 10:10 pm in reply to: Elfman week-end at Paris Philarmonic (Sept. 19) with potential new concert work #99032boingomusic
ParticipantGreat evening. The discussion was fun, and as many times as we’ve heard the “Batman theme during his flight” story, it’s always fun to hear him tell it. Like all good jokes, it gets better every time.
I asked him the first question about his script projects. Little Demons, Jimmy Callicutt etc. I wanted to know if it’s something he decided to give up, or if there’s still hope. He started to answer saying he wrote these just to keep himself busy, and then moved to another subject. Didn’t really got a full answer 😅

ParticipantSo, who’s attending the Elfman weekend in Paris?
Did any of you notice the program has changed ?The chamber concert on Saturday evening was supposed to start with a Q&A (which is still the case) and then, after the break, the announced program was : Elfman film music pieces adapted for chamber orchestra. And then, the Piano Quartet.
I don’t know what exactly happened, but the Elfman film music for chamber orchestra somehow disappeared from the program and it’s replaced by a Mozart piece. Seriously??? Mozart???
I mean, I have nothing against Mozart. But when you travel to Paris for such an event, you’d expect them to, at least, let you know about program changes. And, if they respect film music fans, maybe replace it with something closer to the artist you bought tickets to hear. Any other film music composer quartet would have been nice. Or anything by Stravinski or Schostakovitch, or Prokofiev… but Mozart?!?? Really????I feel cheated.

ParticipantI believe he was joking, and referring to the creature in the picture, and not Del Toro, when he said they were a “thing” for a while, and “love remains one of life’s greatest mysteries”.

ParticipantAgain, this is part of the Burton’s classic themes. Humans being boring. And minorities being full of life. Remember Corpse Bride. The living are boring.
Same with Beetlejuice. They’re all off. That’s the whole point. The daughter in Dumbo reminds me of Christina Ricci in Sleepy Hollow. That innocent face that’s just there. But you don’t see much personality.
Even in Miss Peregrine. The girl (who does look like the daughter in Dumbo by the way) doesn’t say much. It’s just typical of Burton.boingomusic
ParticipantI totally agree with you Ryan. I have a hard time understanding all the criticism. The movie reflects many of the usual Burton thematics. It is also very faithful to the original Disney film. It’s very moving, and in my opinion, Elfman’s score is absolutely perfect on screen. It’s definitely Elfman’s best work for more than a decade, when you hear it with the images. It fits so well, it’s almost like magic.
I started to work on adapting the main themes into a piano suite, and I realize how complex the different themes are. Even Dumbo’s theme. Every time it appears, it’s slightly different. The melody changes depending on when it’s played. The ending of the theme is almost different every time. And even the harmonies change. So subtle. Very clever.

ParticipantI saw the movie last night and loved it.
I think it had been a long time since I had not loved a score like this. It fits perfectly the movie.
It’s a return to classic Burton/Elfman. Some orchestrations even remind me of Batman Returns.Anyway, I did a little 19-minute suite, with different tracks and portions of tracks mixed together, pretty much like in the Music For A Darkened Theater albums, trying to respect the keys when a track slips into another. If anyone is interested, I’d love to share it. E-mail me at : sycoon at Gmail dot com.

ParticipantWhy do I feel like we’re gonna get some chamber ensemble playing & Danny singing new versions of Oingo Boingo classics?!?
In that awkward interview we watched a few weeks ago, he said something about revisiting his songs, but not in a band… and then said he couldn’t say more. And now he speaks about a semi-secret project involving his voice and a chamber orchestra… coincidence ???

ParticipantYeah, same for me. I really wanted to have nice seats. So, I didn’t want to wait until May to buy individual tickets. So I bought the pass.
But I felt the same way about the Alice concert.
And I actually felt bad about feeling this way 😅Think about it. Before 2012, a symphonic Elfman concert was not even concievable. And now, we have a whole Elfman weekend. And we have second thoughts about watching a Burton film with live orchestra, even when the tickets are part of a package. I love the Alice theme. Not a huge fan of the movie. But I’ve seen Alice Live in Lucerne a few years ago. I guess that’s why it didn’t feel so necessary. And… hearing loud action music at 3,30pm before going to a chamber music concert the same evening doesn’t feel right.
You’re actually the third person I talk to, today, mentioning the lack of motivation about going to see the Alice concert…

ParticipantVery interesting album.
And I must say I’m always more than happy to hear Danny sing again.
Even if the song is not to be taken too seriously, it is very reminiscent of early Oingo Boingo fun.
It sounds like a “Tender Lumplings, part 2”.
I love it.- AuthorPosts
