Yeah, I’m not surprised (read my earlier post above) : I was sure that it was an original ‘Ego Plum’ composition based on Elfman’s themes…

Yeah, I’m sure this film will get better and better with time. I feel a Big Fish situation there…
And I too, loved the use of songs so much that I might make my chronological playlist mixing the songs and Elfman’s music. Yes, I’m going to put songs in the middle of an Elfman/Burton score…2012 wasn’t in vain.

Oops, forgot that Wednesday is the “new release day” only in French speaking countries. My bad.

Let’s clink Belgian and Brit beers to patch things up*. :)-D

*At least if you can see smilies. I can’t.

We live in a place called Europe where it has been released yesterday…:)

I disagree with you boingomusic : I’m sure the use of songs has been planned way ahead and don’t think that any of Elfman’s music was rejected. They might tried some original cues on several scenes but went for the song in the end. However, don’t you guys think it’s an issue : songs work very well and most of the time they actually really interact with the film (they are justified on screen), which confirms my feeling that it was planned all along.
As for the main title, Burton may have asked Elfman to try to write it (Taking Woodstock style ?) but I’m also fairly sure that they actually chose a song to mark the era’s change. And to be honest, it works very very well.

So yes, it doesn’t leave much room to Elfman and this might be one of his shortest score for Burton, also because there are many dialogue scenes without music. All in all, it feels way more balanced than Sleepy Hollow’s over-musicality for example. Elfman’s got the prologue to shine as well as the finale and rest assure that he doesn’t miss the opportunity. His main theme has some great momentum that gives you the shivers. The rest of the score is more about experimenting with the 70’s feel (Wendy Carlos notably), atmospheric cues, etc. It’s quite an interesting score actually but more technically than melodically.

As for the film, it’s a Burton comedy with more spooky moments. It’s all about the characters, how they interact, what they represent (the protective mother, the disappointing father, the sexual predator, the outcast), etc. It has that mixture of humor, “campyness”, sex, horror that only Burton can balance right. It’s not a great movie but a good one and I really think it’s one of his most interesting work in a while, with a lot of things to be analyzed in terms of its vision of the American society, on war of genders, etc. There are also several choices made by Burton here that departures from his usual style, which is pleasant.

As “Ego Plum” is credited in the video’s credits, I would assume it’s legit.

Who is he ? ‘Cause maybe he wrote the song and just adapted Elfman’s themes; that would be why Elfman’s name is on there…

I do agree that a director should always fight to get what he wants but good directors know that they also have to give to their artistic collaborators a certain amount of freedom and respect in order for them to try to give their best.

Well, the part the sample is taken from is very much similar in the soundtrack and in the film. Differences occur after 2/3rd of the track…

I’ll wait two weeks to see if LLL will announce Hook in order to order both.

Facebook is essential for what ? To spread the community ? I really fear it will attract people who just know Elfman from the Batman or the Simpsons theme, with silly questions and topics, and will make us go away for good…

Right, I forgot about that. I still have my Spider-Man 2 videos up and I’m still waiting for the day they will ask me to take them down. Only got one mail saying that “one of your videos may contain some clips copyrighted to Columbia Pictures”. One? More like ten ! :D

    Hey Ryan,

Another member from “a while back” here…

First off, I fully agree with what has been said until now, so I won’t be repeating the same comments.

I do think that you could trim the website down to a minimalistic (in terms of theme and data) wordpress blog as (unfortunately) websites don’t rely on exhaustive content anymore but on instant interactions.
However, I do think a board is still pertinent as it is less intrusive and a more powerful tool than just a Facebook group. We are a very small community here but a durable one. We know our subject and are able to talk about more in-depth subjects than “I really love Tim Burton’s films because they are so different” or “What’s the track’s title of the Gremlins theme Elfman wrote” ? That’d be all over a Facebook group I’m sure. Even more geeky communities such as reddit have very poor knowledge in terms of film music, no to mention Elfman’s work.

So my advice would be : keep this website as archive, go wordpress all the way, include a very small wordpress board plugin (something light and fitting our needs) and that’s it. From there, we could always build on top if needed as wordpress is such a malleable tool.

And finally : if you need help, don’t hesitate. I was toying with the idea to actually open an Elfman wordpress blog a few months earlier as I thought this one was shut down for good and thought I could fill the void. So, I’d be happy to help.

PS : if you could change my username to “DannyBiker” instead of “Danny Biker”, your soul will be blessed forever.
