KeymasterAccording to Shirley Walker, the chorus in “Descent Into Mystery” is merely singing combinations of scales of “doh, ray, me, fah, soh, lah, te, doh”, etc.

KeymasterIt was from THE LORD OF THE DANCE, of all places, by Ronan Hardiman.
As for the film versions vs. OST versions, the difference probably lies in mixing. I don’t know where you can find the film versions, so enjoy the OST tracks if you can.

KeymasterIt was already clearly established that there was no Ottman/Elfman feud.
But thanks for the link anyways.

KeymasterThanks for the link!
Welcome to the site.

KeymasterThanks for the link. I like the fact that Elfman is upfront and makes no bones about his process. He isn’t hiding anything and is secure enough in his abilities — particularly a good thing now that he is swimming in shark infested classical music waters.

KeymasterIt isn’t performed until the end of February. What news would there be?
As of two weeks ago there were no plans to release the piece on CD.

KeymasterI checked batman-on-film.com, and they now say the BATMAN SE DVD artwork was fake.

KeymasterThat’s great news. I wish I had heard about this when I was talking to someone… Argh

KeymasterOne song won’t do it. But in the case of THE AVIATOR, there was more songs than score, or at least an amount of songs which made Howard Shore’s music ineligible for Oscar (think the Academy is out to get him?)

KeymasterI’m not saying that Debney wrote a note for note, but what I am saying is it’s more likely that he was inspired by this very famous classical work than he was GLORY, a civil war drama that features only one reference to this particular motif and a score that was very unlikely on the PASSION temp track. It’s a widely regarded opinion that Horner lifted from RVW’s Tallis piece, not just my private theory.

KeymasterI don’t agree, so there!

Maybe in the movie it works fine, but on disc, it overstays it’s welcome.

KeymasterHe was there and famously was over Jim Cameron’s shoulder… So he got lots of camera time.
Here’s a sidenote: the Academy recently amended it’s rules for original scores. They must now be a significant portion of the film’s musical content and cannot be diluted by songs. Had this rule been in place in ’98, THE FULL MONTY would have been uneligible and Elfman’s MEN IN BLACK probably would have won the “Best Original Comedy Score”. A category that has sadly been dropped.

KeymasterNo, but they used to spam me with their gig notices for years.

KeymasterLet’s just face it — EDWARD is so damn good, it makes everything that much better.
Whether it be Nissans, Disneyland, cold medicine, Casper or Lemony Snicket!

KeymasterThe GLORY connection is something I don’t agree with.
Horner’s “Burning The Town of Darien” from GLORY specifically qoutes Ralph (my favorite classical composer – I strongly urge everyone to explore his music!!) Vaughn Williams’ “Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis”. That theme in GLORY appears only once — in that single cue.
It is the Vaughn Williams piece which I think Debney is also qouting. Afterall, listening to “Fantasia” it’s easy to evoke the complicated emotions of the Crucifixion.
Just to show how prepared I am, below is a clip (the piece runs almost 16 minutes in length — this is a snippet of two excerpts) from the Vaughn Williams piece to show you just where Horner got his idea!
“Fantastia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis” (Excerpt)
I’d believe that before believing that GLORY was on the temp track.

KeymasterHere are some clips from “Elf” and “The Polar Express”. Make sure to right click and save as, because these won’t be here forever.
“Elf” Clip 1 – Big statement of “Buddy’s Theme”, similiar to first half of “The Polar Express” main theme.
“Elf” Clip 2 – “Buddy’s Theme” scaled down similiar to the next clip…
“The Polar Express” Clip 1 – First half of theme is remarkably similiar to “Elf” theme.
“The Polar Express” Clip 2 – Reminds me of “Edward Scissorhands”, even has it’s own well-timed crescendo, finishes with an Edward-ian choir.
