ParticipantWow… I had no idea it was out of print. Last time I was in NY (in february), Virgin Mega Store in Times Square still had one copy left…
Try looking for smaller shops, or even on foreign online-stores. I live in Switzerland, and there’s an online store called : http://www.cede.ch and it seems like they still have a copy (for 42swiss francs, which is pretty close to 40$ us)….

ParticipantWell, yes.. it IS related… See : Ryan is related to that video because he worked with the director, and Danny is somehow related to Ryan (— I’m sure,
—)
So, it is CLEARY relatedAnyway, it’s an AMAZING video, really liked it !
Thanks for sharing.boingomusic
ParticipantThanks for the info Ryan… Sorry about that, for a moment I thought it might be Elfman’s music….

ParticipantWOW !!!
Was that a fan project ??? Or is it really part of the dvd ???
Anyway, it’s AMAZING ! I’ve always been a huge fan of Gremlins!boingomusic
ParticipantWell, I would pretty much picture DANNY as the Cheshire Cat

ParticipantI saw this a few days ago… I always thought Richard Elfman WANTED the forbidden zone to be in black & white, because it felt more esthetic. Apparently, he always had in mind to shoot it in b&w and then to colorize it, but since the movie never got famous enough at the time, they didn’t get the budget to do it…
I’m really curious to know who are the “various members of the mystic knights” that are going to show up at the screening…
Anyway, I bought recently a french version of the Forbidden Zone dvd, which is REALLY worth buying.
The encoding has directly been made from the 1080p High Definition Master, the DTS soundtrack is a 24bit encoded to 768 kbps (and not a 16bit like the us version). I’ve never heard a dvd sound THAT good in my life! THE BEST PART : it presents also the movie with the previous 2.0 sound mix (the one that was on the vhs, and a few songs appear in an older/different version than the ones in the final dvd.)
Another good thing is an extra interview with Marie-Pascale Elfman IN FRENCH.The editor is “Le chat qui fume” (which means “The cat who smokes”)

ParticipantJust saw the movie.
The music is amazingly used.
To answer Danny Burton’s question : No, Success Montage isn’t played during the titles. A short version of the FATE theme is played during the logos. There are no Main Titles. I LOOOVED the way “The little things” is incorporated in that scene in the movie. The mix is different, there are some orchestral parts added to it (playing the main notes of the FATE THEME) during the guitar riff.I was just a little bit disappointed by the way some tracks were edited in the movie. Success Montage, Fraternity Suite, Fox’s Story and Fate, ALL appear in shorter versions in the movie.
The END TITLES were a perfect selection of all the movie’s best themes, including : The Little Things, Success Montage and Fate!

ParticipantYes, I heard that too. It is indeed a very common chord progression that many film composers use, but I agree that with this orchestration, it really reminds me of Newton Howard’s work…
Another chord progression that is common is the one that can be heard in the beginning of the 18th track (“A Choice”, between 0:30 and 0:45). It really reminds me of Goldenthal’s Batman theme

ParticipantUsually, I love these kind of recordings because it gives a different view of the score… Sometimes, the orchestra interprets it his own way and it can be very interesting.
In this case, I’m pretty disappointed. I got the cd today, and the orchestra isn’t precise at all. The choir’s recording isn’t good at all, and you can barely hear the strings. The whole thing is very Brass-orientated.
I don’t think it’s any good for an Elfman fan, and I don’t think this compilation is a good way to enter Elfman’s world at all… It takes away all the “finesse” that can be heard in Elfman’s recordings. The only track that’s worth listening is Sleepy Hollow. The choral parts are very interesting.

ParticipantWell, i guess this interview AND the Haunted Hotel story clearly puts an end to the rumour about Del Toro not being satisfied with the Hellboy score….! Apparently, he’s more than happy with it, and he and Danny get along good enough to visit haunted hotels and get drunk together
Who had posted that story / rumour anyway?!!!!??

P.S. : Am I the only one to be surprised about Danny saying that Kingdom is way more melodic than Wanted??? I don’t really get this… But I really love the fact that he could have done variations around the wanted themes forever… Last time I had heard him say such a thing about a theme, it was about Edward Scissorhands…. Anyway, I had not heard Elfman THAT satisfied about his job for a loooong time.
Oh, and Forbidden Zone in color???? Where did that come from??? Didn’t Richard Elfman shoot the movie in black & white on purpose? I noticed there are COLOR Foribidden Zone dvd’s signed by Rick for sale on the official FZ website…boingomusic
ParticipantWell, I totally understand how you feel about The Kingdom, and I admint I don’t really like electronic-based scores… So that’s maybe why I didn’t like it. I never said it was bad, and it really suited perfectly the movie, so I guess it’s a good score, but I just don’t like it… But as you said, it’s nice to see Danny try new styles….
Anyway, it’s not the first time Elfman goes for more modern scores…. If we look back, there’s WISDOM, that was all electronics (another score that people usually don’t like much), and there was Midnight Run (not electronic, but with a band)… Of course, a lot of people (like me) loved Midnight Run even if it wasn’t orchestral, because it had that Oingo Boingo sound, plus the whole thing was variations on the Boingo “Try To Believe” song.
I’m really happy to see that some people loved The Kingdom. Don’t get me wrong, i admire the maestro’s work, and it’s nice to hear a modern orchestral-electronic score that DOESN’T sound like a MediaVentures product, but I’m very happy to see that Danny got back to a style we had not heard for a long time now…
Elfman’s last works really show how talented this composer is… Kingdom, Standard Operating Procedure, Wanted, Hellboy II : four different approaches! And I don’t even mention the fact that he got back to writing and singing a rock song!!!
Wow, what a year…

ParticipantWow…. What a surprise. I got the cd today, and I wasn’t very excited, since a lot of people were very disappointed by the score… And once again, I realize that it’s stupid to rely on other people’s tastes and critics.
The album is simply AMAZING. Who said there’s no theme?!!?? There are at least two beautiful and specific themes. It’s as if Elfman had decided to create a score that would reflect all the styles he’s done in the past decades. I hear a lot of NIGHTBREED in it, as well as a magical theme that reminds me of EDWARD SCISSORHANDS. The percussions are similar to Planet Of The Apes, and some parts like “A troll market” sound like Mars Attacks.
It’s one of these scores you can’t get tired of because it NEVER repeats itself.
I think that the people who didn’t like it simply didn’t understand it because it’s very rich, and there’s a lot to listen to. It keeps getting better and better with every listen, and I really love the ethnic music that finishes the album.
These last four months have been very interesting, Elfman-ly speaking. Three albums, and three masterpieces!!! I feel way better now, because I muss admit I really didn’t like Meet The Robinsons (even the full score version) and I really couldn’t stand Kingdom….!
boingomusic
ParticipantUhm… I don’t think Dawg Man got the joke… lol
boingomusic
ParticipantSo, imagine, guys, how frustrated I am, after finishing something I was pretty proud of, not to be able to suscribe because I’m not american….
boingomusic
ParticipantOh… god… I just spent more than 3 hours, and I was pretty happy with the result, but I didn’t know you cannot submit your video if you’re not from the US… So, my whole work is gone… It’s too bad you can’t even save your work… And the worst thing is : you can’t preview a specific part of the video. So, if you’re mixing the end of the video, you have to replay the whole song to finally preview that part…. !!!!
All this for nothing… I’m pretty depressed…
boingomusic
ParticipantYeah, and speaking of Zimmer’s Batman theme that has been suposedly composed but left over, don’t worry guys, he will recycle it FOR SURE in some other action movie… It’ll probably be in one of those Media Ventures Action samplers and some day, he’ll pick it up and use it… Zimmer would never leave over anything, as far as he can get money out of it….
All this being said, I admit I really LOVE his music for “The Ring” but once againt, I doubt he composed anything for this movie, because the additionnal composers credits are amazingly long

ParticipantGOD, I HATE THIS GUY !!!!
He always feels so superior in his interviews… I can’t stand him!

ParticipantDo you think we can hope for a cd single release, or a video to promote the movie???
boingomusic
Participanti tried to find it on their playlist but I don’t see it… it’s hard to say without hearing it….
Maybe it’s a track from the album. Some parts on the album are way more orchestral than the parts on the “Music for a darkened theater, vol II” disc…June 1, 2008 at 10:16 am in reply to: OMG DANNY SINGS AGAIN in the wanted soundtrack album !!!! #60808boingomusic
ParticipantAnd guys, I just realized : it means Danny might be nominated as best song at the oscars, and we might see him sing again… Ok, ok, I know, Danny and the oscars don’t seem to get along very well, but we can always HOPE !!!
I’ve one more thing to say : how is it that NO ONE SAW THIS COMING ???
I mean, we’re the MFADP forum, we used to know EVERYTHING before it happened!!!!
Can you believe how secret this project must have been, hehe-Eric

ParticipantI’m not really sure what to think about the Sweeney Todd tracks… 15 tracks, and 4 of them from Sweeney Todd??? I don’t get it… The main titles are brilliant, and the songs are good within the movie, but a re-recording of the songs???!!!???
Except these four tracks, I can’t wait to hear these new recordings… Usually, Silva Screen releases are played by the Prague Philarmonic Orchestra, and sometimes, it’s very interesting to hear new versions of music we’ve been listening for years now…

ParticipantJames Horner ? Really ? I always thought this story was a joke. I mean, we all know how Horner works
but I didn’t know there was a true story here…
What was the score he was sued for ??? What happened?- AuthorPosts
