ParticipantIndeed it did come out of left field. I’m glad to see Elfman branch out in other genres, but that director (David O’ Russell) is an A hole in real life. He was caught on camera cursing and yelling at Lily Tomlin over a disagreement while filming I Heart Huckabees I believe.
There were also rumors that Clooney and O’Russell got into it on while filming Three Kings b/c O’Russell put his hand on an extra and Clooney confronted him about it. Both were yelling at each other and almost got into a fight according to co-star.Ice Cube.
All I gotta say is Elfman better be careful with him. I don’t trust O’Russell and have a feeling the Weinsteins brought Elfman on board. This looks like an oscar bait movie and they probably want an oscar bait score from Elfman. And I know Elfman doesn’t write scores to win oscars. I also have a feeling the movie is going to have mostly songs with some cues from Elfman in between like Good Willl Hunting.

Participant^^^After I read your post what little interest I had in this film has now dropped considerably. The title change was ridiculous. I guess they thought “Epic” was more appealing than “Leaf men”. Elfman would probably be the only reason I’d check it out anyway.

ParticipantFinally saw the movie. Though it wasn’t terrible like critics and fans made it out to be. It could’ve been so much better. First off I’m not that familiar with the show. I’ve seen bits of it when SYFY (was spelled SciFi channel back in the day) reran eps. To be honest I thought it was pretty dull for a vampire soap opera though the idea and premise was interesting. So I never really cared for it. My mom was a big fan though. Don’t get me wrong that was a show that I wanted to like but could never get into.
Here’s some of the problems I had with the Burton film. I’ll try not to spoil it for some who have yet to see it. The Victoria character was underdeveloped and the movie felt like it forgot her once Banabas returned. The romance between Barnabas and Victoria was just as underdeveloped as her character. In fact every character except Barnabas and Angelique were underdeveloped. The third act was also very sloppy. It wasn’t as great as it ahould’ve been. It felt like it was trying too hard to be like Beetlejuice’s finale and failed miserably. This film needed another rewrite badly. I really didn’t feel emotionally invested in the characters except for Barnabas’ of course. I wish they could’ve done more with the family especially with Victoria (I know she’s not a Collins but a guest/nanny) sense she was introduced in 1972 before every other character in that period. The movie should’ve focused on her POV as much as Barnabas since his feelings for her are similar to his lost love Josette and b/c of how much she reminds him of her. I didn’t like the explanation of why Victoria was attracted to Barnabas either. B/c it feels “hynoptic”. Come on. The romance or whatever was poorly developed and almost forgotten b/c of how many characters Burton and co. tried to juggle and so that one explanation is why she’s attracted to Barnabas? Though there was hardly any relationship imo. A lot of ideas needed more focus since so and so cursed the family. The movie just threw ideas at the end and expects us to go with it like “I’m a werewolf get over it” ” Oh so and so was bit by a werewolf in so and so’s crib” “I pushed so and so’s into the river” ” etc. That’s just sloppy but I guess these events happened to certain characters in the show so that’s why it was there. It just didn’t anything to the film with it being there. There were other problems as well but I don’t want to keep going.
The production values are top notch as always in Tim’s films. The cast were decent. And did what they could with what little they was given. It’s hard to judge the family especially the younger cast b/c of what little they werer given to do. Though Pfeiffer wasn’t used enough at the best of her talents. She did good with what she was given. Depp and Green gave good performances not surprising sense their relationship was put into the forefront over the Collins family. I also found the subplot or whatever with HBC interesting. Needed more scenes like that. Oh and Elfman’s score was good but I don’t recall anything really amazing going on with the music in the film. It has a similar tone and style of his “Wolfman” score. But that’s not a complaint. I’m still getting the cd regardless. But Burton really should’ve hit a home run with this one. This really lacks the magic that certain films of his has, imho. Overall I thought the film was decent. It had some entertaining bits but was a missed opportunity for Burton and Depp. It could’ve so much better. Just needed an all around better script with more focus. The movie was all over the place with ideas.

ParticipantCan’t wait. First two scores were a lot of fun. Curious to see what he’ll do with the 60s plot in the film.

ParticipantGo figure!

ParticipantRobocop’s getting remade, Beetlejuice is getting a sequel and now Midnight Run (though I still have yet to see the original) is getting a sequel after many years. When does it end?

ParticipantWith all the negative feedback this song’s getting hopefully it’ll be absent on the score album. Assuming Sony will release a score album.

ParticipantWow didn’t know Joan Rivers was in this looks like not only she got her face done again but her body now as well.
All kidding aside the music sounds good. Thought the Forbidden Zone theme was used well in it. Sounds like it might bea mock-up of Elfman’s music. Probably b/c of budget. This looks like it’s going to be just as bizarre and crude as the original but in color this time.Wonder if SYFY channel will air this when completed?

ParticipantWell it’s great to see Real Steel get some recognition. IMO it was one of the best scores of 2011. And “Final Round” is definitely one of the best cues of 2011. I was worried Elfman wouldn’t get any IFMCA nominations. But not anymore.

ParticipantDisappointing. Though I’m not into musicals. I was really looking forward to what Elfman would compose for this. First the Edward Scissorhands musical and now this. What’s with Elfman’s bad luck with broadway musicals?

ParticipantWith four projects next year. Three coming in at the first half of next year. This was bound to happen. Though I expected Elfman to back out of MIIIB instead . But I’m glad he didn’t. B/c I’d rather see Elfman complete a trilogy he begun musically. Good luck to Howard. I’m sure he’ll do good. But Elfman was the only reason I was going to see this movie. Now my interest in it is gone.

ParticipantGood to know. My most anticipated Elfman score next year.

ParticipantFinished listening to this a few hours ago. What can I say. Another great Elfman score. I love Atom’s theme. It still remains in my head after I’m long done. “Charlie Trains Atom”, “Meet Atom”,Safe With Me”,”Atom Versus Twin Cities”, “Bonding”, “Parkway Motel”, “This Is A Brawl”, “You Deserve Better”, “Into The Ring””Final Round” (one of the best cues this year) and “People’s Champion” are some of the highlights. But thw whole score is great. This is definitely one of the best scores this year, imo.

ParticipantJust got back from the movie. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it was going to be. It was actually very enterrtaining and fun. Not a dull moment.
Elfman’s score was excellent and used sparingly. I was surprised how much of Elfman’s music made it in the film. It even carried the last match in the film. And added a lot of emotional weight to that final fight. His score to this is very similar to Taking Woodstock and especially The Kingdom. With the guitar riffs. Atom’s theme is very catchy. It added to a lot of the scenes when used. Especially during that final fight. Definitely can’t wait for this score release. Elfman delivered the goods.

ParticipantJust found this on YT. Danny talks about his daughter and the project at 5:04 . It’s short . But it’s neat seeing Elfman react to his daughter taking on something like filmmaking. Like a normal father would when they see their daughter mature and acheive something. Very cool. Mali’s interview was nice as well. It’s amazing that she’s related to one of the best composers in the filmmusic business. Hope she finds success after this and in the future.
