ParticipantDanny has some pretty big sleeves he’s hiding tricks under. What a sneaky bastard.

ParticipantWe should get it and send it to Danny for his birthday on May 29th.

ParticipantSpeak for yourself, I would love to hear the ‘Hot to Trot’ Quadrilogy!

ParticipantWow, that’s nothing. Other that the “clam shell” VHS copy i got, my first digital copy was of the LASER DISC. How nerdy and primitive am I? (Gotta say though, the interviews on the LD were sooo much longer that the ones on the DVD.)
My Blu Ray should be coming to me very soon, and I look forward to seeing it again for the 10 millionth time.

ParticipantAlso, if you rent ‘Down With Love’, you can hear Mark Shaiman’s jazzy rendition of the Sommersby Theme.

ParticipantI also doubt he win, but I’m extremely happy he got nominated. Milk is a fantastic, mature, multi-layered score (listening to it now in honor, of course) and am glad it got the nod. 2008 was indeed a great year for Danny, and 2009 is looking really good too.

ParticipantFirst McG and NOW Elfman. Noooooooooo! All his scores sound the same. What a terrible choice. The robots will sound like they are in a circus. He and Burton should f**k each other in Hot Topic and leave Terminator alone.
Oh wait, I thought this was the stupid Elfman bashing Ain’t It Cool News message board. Sorry about that.
Seriously, I’m truly excited. Elfman went from 2 (well 1 and a half) to 4 scores this year in the blink of an eye. Very excited.

ParticipantOh dear GOD, that makes the other re-record you were bitching about sound like f-ing Mozart. The title of the album should be “The Sounds of Elfman as interpreted by a retard monkey hitting a Casio.” Even the lyrics are wrong on the Wonka song. Instead of “to contain, to contain, to contain” they say “Chicka chain-chika chain-chicka chain!” I must now empty the blood from my ears. Ryan, I look forward to your article and redesign in 2012.

ParticipantSo, I just got my copy today and am going through it as we speak. A great disc with nice packaging…but dammit if Elfman’s Main Title STILL has the f-ing lightening crack at the end!!! That and there is no meta data with the disc…that hopefully will change soon, cause I don’t wanna type 71 track names all my myself…that’s what robots are for….right?
Still, despite the complaints, it’s great having this music in one collection. Hearing this again really makes me miss Shirley Walker. Elfman had some nice things to say about her in the liner notes as well. I would post them, but I’m lazy and that Ryan’s job anyway.

ParticipantI agree, I believe this is Elfman’s best year since 2005. Not only have we gotten some stellar work from the red haired genius, but a broad rage of style. Each score is like a snowflake. And I think ‘Milk’ is just pure and utter brilliance. From the opening credits to …well, the opening credits, this is Danny’s most mature and versatile work to date, I believe. I think it’s almost a middle finger to all the people who claim, “Danny’s scores all sound alike”. Hell, it was even stated in this interview:
ComingSoon.net: If I hadn’t seen Danny Elfman’s name on the credits, I might not have known he composed the score, so what sort of direction did you give him for this compared to what you’ve done with him before?
Van Sant: Well, I wanted him to be kind of crazy, but it’s a relatively conventional score I think. He sort of feels it out and he plays stuff for me and I’m a little bit part of that process, but I usually defer to him, because it’s a huge artistic effort. It’s sort of like Sean building his character, they’re both very intense artists. They can only interpret it their own way. They can’t straddle what you want and what they want.
Well, enough of this tippity-tapping I have more Milk to listen to…it does a body good. (Come on…ONE of us was gonna make that lame joke sooner or later.)
Lucius
P.S. other than ‘Postscript’, ‘The Vote Passes’ still has to be my favorite track due to it’s simplistic, and horn solo-y brilliance.
Lucius
ParticipantWow, that is some impressive stuff; and such a broad rage to boot. I agree Ryan, ‘Postscript’ is amazing…just when the clip is about to get really going, it stops…dammit. Another track that I was really impressed by was the horn solo in ‘Vote Passes’. I’ve never really heard Danny do that before…proving once again that he is continually still growing as a composer. This score is definitely a lock for an Oscar nomination.

ParticipantRighty ho, Ryan, old chap. I’ve been dying to try out my new elephant rifle. I’ll bring the snifters of brandy, you bring the fancy cigars and your hunting ascot.
Lucius
ParticipantSoooooorry guys, a long day at work and lack of sleep turned my brain into a second grader last night. We are a classy bunch on this site, and I forgot that. I will make sure to have my top hat and monocle on when I post in the future.

Lucius
ParticipantAhhhh yes, I remember sitting around the computer with my friends in college watching this transpire. Wow, that brings back memories. (also reminds me that I’m getting old.) And yes, Elfman DID invent Batman.
Lucius
Lucius
ParticipantI also think that S.O.P. may be outta the picture due to it having a couple cues from Serenada. The Academy gets very picky if it’s not 100% original. Just look at There Will Be Blood not being eligible.
Lucius
Lucius
ParticipantI know you’re right, it’s not like I get paid to look at the internet and listen to music all day….oh wait!
Lucius
Lucius
ParticipantWell Ryan, I wish you could cough and all the circus cues from ‘Big Fish’ could come out. A brother can dream, can’t he? Now, I’m gonna go to the bathroom and try to crap out a complete ’89 Batman cd.
Lucius
Lucius
ParticipantWell just to put an end to all this Burton bashing (or not) the rumor is he’s NOT doing Pirates 4. Terry Rossio (co-screenwriter) debunks all the rumors. (Russell Brand included…thank GOD) I can’t say I’m surprised since the source looked like it was written but a 12 year old via text message. Probably the same guy/gal that said Cher was gonna play the Catwoman in Dark Knight 3! CHER?! Now let’s stop all this fightin’ and a feudin’ and get on to some LOVIN’!

ParticipantYeah, I’m pretty damn excited. Not only is it gonna look cool, but it’ll be 3D as well. Not that View Master-esque 3D in NMBC (which is still beautiful), but something that is actually intended to have a 3rd dimension. Say what you will about the zombie eyed characters in Polar Express and Beowulf, it was a blast to watch in 3d; and now to have Tim do it with such a fantastical pallet will be brain melting.
I for one hope he casts Glenn Shadix (Otho) to play the Caterpillar. He would be perfect, right? And you can bet your bottom dollar that Helena will play the Queen of Hearts, much to the chagrin of Burton haters (not on this site, of course
)
What other cast prediction do you guys have?
Lucius
P.S. Oh yeah, Steve Buscemi for the Cheshire Cat.

In between taking a dump on the street and calling God a ‘Cup o’ Noodles’ I swear I heard him say that James Horner was a self plagiarizing hack! Hmm, he was right…amazing. I was just about to flip a nickel his way when I heard him say what Elfman’s Batman was too jolly and Spiderman was themeless. My nickel turned into a kick in the stomach. Man, I need to move to a different neighborhood.
Lucius
p.s. RE: Wanted. I don’t think it’s the best theme he’s ever written, but I think ‘Success Montage’ is the best theme he’s written in a LONG time.
Lucius
ParticipantDawg Man, I was thinking the same thing when I first heard it. Good ear. Yup, a week has almost past, and I can’t stop listening to this score (okay, I’ll take a few ‘Wanted’ breaks every now and again.) It just gets better and better. Can’t wait to see the movie this Friday.
