ParticipantSometimes I wonder if the composers have more personality than the actors… Anyway, I did some lookin’ and this whole “Finding Kraftland” documentary sounds pretty interesting! Go to the website (www.findingkraftland.com) and learn about it, it’s definitely something I’ll try to see if it ever becomes available!

ParticipantI just watched “The Right Stuff” for the first time and really loved Bill Conti’s Oscar-winning score. I listened to that score and then thought of Santaolalla’s Oscar-winning “Brokeback Mountain.” Are they even remotely close in quality? I’m still not over his win last year, I thought it was an incredibly unremarkable score.

ParticipantHa, that’s a really cute story in content and style. Doug was lucky he got a chance to “connect with family,” I know it’s cool from experience. I’ve actually met someone with my last AND first name and found out his family is probably connected to mine (through similar cultural roots as the Elfmans, actually).

ParticipantYeah, I noticed that too! It definitely beats them playing the tracks from the “Music From and Inspired by” CD. It’s about as cool as when I went to see Spidey 2 on IMAX and the score from the first movie was playing in the waiting area. I’m really excited!
By the way, when do they record the score for Spidey 3? The movie comes just over 3 months, so shouldn’t that take place fairly soon?

ParticipantI can’t believe James Newton Howard’s “Lady in the Water” wasn’t nominated. The movie was a stinker, but the score was beautiful. But now Desplat and Santaolalla seem to be the Academy’s new favorites despite their unimpressive scores (granted, I haven’t heard any of the nominated scores, but I can probably take a good guess at how they sound). I’m not a fan of Thomas Newman and I don’t know what Philip Glass’ nominated score sounded like, but I’ve heard the most praise for Javier Navarrete’s “Pan’s Labyrinth” score, so I suppose I’ll support that one? Anyway, the Oscars suck.

ParticipantWow, he seems like a much harder man than I had always pictured him. I based my judgment on a story I once heard somewhere about his first time on the Disney California Adventure ride “Soaring over California” before he wrote the music for it, that when he came down he was crying because he was so moved by it. Either way it doesn’t really matter, because it’s these guys’ music that really counts.

ParticipantYour cousin did that one? I feel like I saw it on another site, which is cool because it’s a great recut trailer! And yes, it is your site, do whatever you want! By the way, I encourage everyone to rent the barely-ever-released “Idiocracy,” Mike Judge’s next film after “Office Space,” which was totally dumped by Fox and was lucky to even get a DVD release. I just saw the movie and it’s pretty funny, so check it out.

ParticipantCool, I’m glad Danny’s on the project…but I’m kinda bummed he won’t get to expand upon his own themes. That was one thing I had really been looking forward to. I was particularly unhappy with Young’s interpretation of Danny’s themes in “Spider-Man 2,” and frankly I was hoping that Danny would be expending upon his themes and writing new ones while Young provided more transitional music. Oh well, it’s still good that Danny’s on board. Now I’m interested to hear his upcoming interviews so he can tell the story of his make-up (?) with Sam Raimi. Perhaps this could lead to future collaborations, including the rumored additional installments to the Spider-Man franchise.

ParticipantI never heard of this vow, and after “Charlie” and “Corpse Bride” it seems kinda weird. But let us not forget that he also swore he’d never work with Sam Raimi again, and yet he’s set to collaborate on Spidey 3.

ParticipantI’ll start the speculation right here:

The options:
“The Ballad of Nessie”
“Golgo’s Guest”
“Prep and Landing”
“How to Install Your Home Theater”Spider-Fan
ParticipantI totally forgot to turn it on at 7:00 ET, but I finally remembered now (7:45 ET), so for anyone who caught the first 45 minutes, did I miss anything good?

ParticipantI saw the movie a few nights ago, and as I thought, the score was pretty much what kept me in the theater. I enjoyed Charlotte’s writing scenes, as they were visually interesting and were scored beautifully, and the CG characters (entirely CG — Charlotte and Templeton ONLY) were quite realistic, but otherwise I didn’t like most things about the movie. I’m never a fan of animating mouths on live-action animals, the screenwriting (not the book writing) was awkward, and the voice acting was lackluster for the most part. I enjoyed Danny’s score throughout the movie, but I feel like the movie itself spoiled the score for me. I’m surprised that the movie got a 79% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 6.7 on IMDb, but I never got close to favoring this movie over the original animated one — pretty much a reverse-Willy Wonka situation.

ParticipantAccording to IMDb, “Planet of the Apes” was her most recent film. Talk about milking it! How can she not get any work?

ParticipantThanks! Danny gives such great interviews. This talk show thing should be a more frequent gig! Actually this was the first time I ever saw Craig Ferguson’s show, let alone ever heard him speak, so this was entertaining and educational for me!
Spider-Fan
ParticipantCool, Steve Oedekirk is writing it! He was, of course, responsible for the comedic masterpiece that is “Kung Pow: Enter the Fist,” so I trust that he’ll do great on this project. I can’t wait to see and hear this movie… it has a ton of musical potential, I think. Just another three years to wait!
Spider-Fan
ParticipantSounds like he liked the score just fine, but the sound mixer overmodulated it. Not a problem for me, because if I do decide to go see this movie, the music is the sole reason for it!

ParticipantDefinitely one of the coolest Danny — or any celebrity, period — stories I’ve heard. Awesome!

ParticipantI agree with you, elfmanguy (and I thank you for bringing us back on topic). I really can’t wait to hear what Danny has planned for this movie. In fact, recently I’d been listening to scores like “Back to the Future,” “The Rocketeer,” and — pretty obscure here — an early John Debney collaboration with George Wilkins on the extinct Horizons attraction at Epcot, and they all have this great feeling of grandeur and adventure that I feel movies have lacked since the early ’90s. I really hope Danny can help bring it back.
By the way, have a listen at that Debney-Wilkins collaboration, I think it’s a really fun, nostalgic kind of track. http://www.soundofmagic.com/sounds/epcot/futureworld/Horizons%20Exit.mp3

ParticipantI wasn’t real thrilled when I first found out about Burton being on the project, but with a cast that includes Johnny Depp, Sacha Baron Cohen, and now Alan Rickman, I’m starting to anticipate it. Of course, without the Elfman touch it just may not be up to par with Burton’s other movies.
Interesting note here… Alan Rickman was in Kevin Smith’s “Dogma” and now he’s in “Sweeny Todd.” Kevin Smith had a small bit of the broadway version of “Sweeny” in “Jersey Girl” (which I maintain is a fine film). Kevin Smith and Tim Burton are sort of archenemies, and now Rickman’s working for him. Ironic? I dunno, but I’ve just been in a real Kevin Smith mood after watching “An Evening with Kevin Smith 2” and “Clerks 2” on DVD, and my name’s in the credits at the end of the latter! Of course, unlike Ryan, I didn’t do anything with the movie to get the credit, all I did was add a Myspace page to my friends list, but cool nonetheless.

ParticipantI too enjoy a good brassy Elfman score, but the movie itself still looks pretty bad to me. It’s just so tough for any animated movies to compete with Pixar these days… why can’t Danny do one of their movies?
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI still often wonder how that’s they guy who wrote the music for “Edward Scissorhands” and “Batman.”
Spider-Fan
ParticipantI believed you, but you were so coy about it the whole time! Either way, Danny’s in and all is good in the world… although it would all be better if Danny decided to pay a visit to the apparently famous museum in which I work; that’d totally make my life.
Spider-Fan
ParticipantYAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!
Seriously, I’m really really glad to see more confirmation on this from someone on the production team. As I’ve said before, Spider-Man was the score that introduced me to Danny and pretty much led me to exclusively listen to film scores, so I was crushed when Danny said he’d never go near another Spider-Man film. I’m so happy that, by whatever circumstances, he’s breaking his vow! My hope is that Chris Young will score some of the darker stuff, working off Danny’s old and possibly new themes, while Danny does the new themes and every single Spidey swinging scene.

ParticipantVery sad news, as she was a very talented composer and apparently a very sweet person. Rest in peace, Shirley.

ParticipantGood stuff! Thanks for putting in all the time for us, we’re all very grateful!
