ParticipantI never saw that letter before! Wow, don’t piss Danny off or he will intelligently take you down! A few funny things said 15 years ago…
” Film composition is a unique art with unique requirements. It is not the same as writing a symphony-something I’ve never professed to be able to do.” Think Rubenstein is crying in a corner now?
“…having worked my ass off for 12 to 14 hours a day, seven days a week, for a month and a half to write that score and yes, you dumb fuck, I actually wrote it down-I will not sit back passively and allow myself to be discredited for the work I did by an idiot who mistakenly thinks that I lazily hire people to do it for me, or that only a conservatory can produce a real film composer.” Like I said, don’t piss him off! I don’t care what anyone says, he’s the coolest guy ever.

ParticipantYou liked the MIB2 finale over the first MIB? If that’s your opinion, I won’t strip you of your right to have it, but the finale to the first Men in Black completely blows me away every time I hear it. You all know how much I love the Spidey score, and the MIB finale came in a close second on my top 5 list to Spidey. I’m always reminded of its Oscar caliber when it takes this turn at around 2:41 on the track where the brass, vocals and chiming bells all come together to form this playful, heroic section that leaves me in awe every time I hear it.
I really went off on my own thing there, but I listened to that finale over and over on my mp3 player while riding a tour bus through the Italian countryside on a school trip next to a girl with whom I had just re-established a relationship in a way you mostly see in movies. Listening to the finale back home reminds me of that amazing time. Bring on the laughter if you wish, but dammit I am happy!

ParticipantThe qhole movie seems to be styled in a, well, Tim Burton fashion. Frankly, I think those glasses were taken from his personal drawer.

ParticipantYou’ve redeemed yourself for the Batman Forever comments, JS. Thanks for the heads-up!

ParticipantI don’t suppose any of us will ever see the scene with the music edited Sony’s way (unless it’s on the 2.5 DVD), but in Edward’s version the music matches the action much better. You did a great job Ryan, don’t get me wrong! Either way, I’m still disappointed that we have to do this rather than the music editor doing it for us. I understand that Sam Raimi wanted a beefy score for that scene, but Danny was probably insistent upon writing appropriate music that reminded us that Spider-Man and Doc Ock were up there. Young’s music was beefy all right, but it wasn’t very personal.

ParticipantI just saw Edward’s version for the first time. I don’t want to undermine Ryan’s excellent version, but Edward nailed it. Great work. It truly captures what Danny intended that scene to sound like.

ParticipantYeah, I brought it up when they first unveiled the plane. Jon Stewart made fun of it on the Daily Show, considering how Edward Scissorhands may have had too much musical emotion for a plane unveiling. The maiden flight was the other day….big friggin’ plane.

Participant80’s chile representing! Maybe it was ’89, but that was the year of the Dark Knight, was it not? I was born in time to have been alive when it came out.

ParticipantToo true, Sleepy. If he were nominated for best song, would he even show up? He wasn’t at last year’s awards, though for good reason because he was nominated in a LOTR year. Still, thinking about this new music and these new songs gives me a tingling feeling inside. I can’t wait!!!

ParticipantSorry everyone, I was on a school trip to Italy for 2 weeks and was delayed in reaching these discussions.
Ryan, great editing job. I do have to say though that I can see what Raimi was thinking when he wanted a bigger score. Sometimes it seems like Danny’s music, while absolutely incredible, just isn’t heavy enough for the fighting, and what Young wrote really hit the spot with the action in the scene. Still, “Appreciation” was outstanding. Absolutely gorgeous when put in that scene.

ParticipantI still have a sliver of hope that Danny’s coming back, but if he doesn’t, I expect Young’s score to sound Matrix-y like the Train scene in Spider-Man 2.

ParticipantI found Hal Sparks (great appearance in Spider-Man 2) on there.

ParticipantWoo, I was in Italy for the past 2 weeks so I’ve missed out!
I always imagined that Danny and Horner were musical allies. I don’t know why, I just always thought that. I love Horner’s music, and it would suck if they were feuding. Of course, the premise of feuding film composers just seems a bit silly. We’re going to soon have film composer battles just like rap battles. Just remember that the Ottman/Elfman feud was a false rumor.

ParticipantHello, Spider-Man 2! Umm, what else…Mission Impossible has been a game before. That’s all I got.

ParticipantTHANK YOU!!! SO MUCH!!! I’m going to Italy this week, and these songs will very gratefully be added to my mp3 player for the long flights. You rock, D-Bo!
Spider-Fan
ParticipantHehe! You’ll also find the original music played when Peter drops and breaks his glasses after the restaurant scene (in the movie part of “Revenge” played) when they show the title for the “Sounds and Music” section of “Making the Amazing.” It’s a triumphant blast of three brass notes that’s really awesome. Also, a favorite among all of us is the original music composed for the close-up swing scene, and it can be heard both a) during the beginning of Danny’s interview in “sounds and music” and b) at the very beginning of the Spyder-Cam feature. D-Bo’s Spider-Man 2 Suite features it mixed in quite well.

ParticipantIf Ryan’s serious about this, then…
Danny,
Your first Spider-Man score got me interested in your music and film music in general, and up to last summer when Spider-Man 2 came out, it was my favorite of your scores. I really believe that they are among the finest scores ever. The music is heroic and emotionally stirring and I can’t imagine any more appropriate music for one of the most favored superheroes in existence. In “Spidey Suite,” you left a few heroic notes at the end that hinted that you would return once again, and we all hope that you do. It is also hoped that you and Sam Raimi and Sony solve whatever disputes you all have been going through, because your relationships with the director and studio have resulted in fantastic work. Please compose the score for Spider-Man 3, because there is no other who can write the score better than you.

ParticipantVery interesting. It’s like Danny Elfman mixed with Klaus Badelt. Good stuff, keep em coming!

ParticipantIt appears that SuperheroHype.com has noticed this, because Danny leaving Spidey is a story there with a link to this site included. It says that he took the same path as John Dykstra in leaving the franchise for other projects. Something tells me that there were numerous problems on Spider-Man 2 that’s making all the crew members leave. Haunted maybe?

ParticipantI didn’t expect much since it’s Talbot’s first feature score. It sounds very simple and average, almost like Disney World area music from the 80’s. I won’t just say now that he’s no good as a composer, because all composers have to start somewhere, even Danny. I don’t know if he plans to make a full career out of film scoring, and I don’t know anything about British pop music, but as with all new composers (Michael Giacchino excluded because he won me on his first feature) I say, give it time.
As for “Hitchhiker’s Guide,” I never read the book or got into the craze, but based on the previews, I wish they had gotten a more experienced crew to work on it. I had hoped that the whole film would look as professional as the Imaginary Forces teaser made it look like, but this looks like “The Fifth Element” or less. I always complain about something before I’ve tried it out, so I’ll see the movie when it comes out and hope that I’m wrong.

ParticipantI remember hearing your Spider-Man 2 Suite before, but I don’t remember the close-up swing being in there! That’s such a great cue, I love it so much. I can’t quite tell, but did you slow it down a bit to match the notes? I can tell that afterwards, the “Appreciation” track is slightly slowed down to match the pace, I think. Did you just do an audio capture from the DVD to get the close-up cue? I’m so very glad you worked it in there. I love both the Spider-Man 2 and History of Elfman suites, you’ve done a very good job compiling them.

ParticipantI know you feel…so so much.

ParticipantYou think John Murphy likes Danny Elfman? Or did Danny Elfman score another one without telling us?

ParticipantNot me! I fell for the same prank last year, but not this year. Actually, the exact same joke was used April Fool’s 2004. Take a look:

Although it would be cool if Danny stepped in for an 11th hour score if Howard and Zimmer couldn’t agree on synth or orchestra and split, or something like that. I’ve been playing “Birth of Penguin” over and over lately, and I would totally love to hear some new Batman material.

ParticipantI’ve entered, and I hope to win! Actually, on the topic of Fable, is the video intro to the game with Danny’s theme available anywhere online? I would have rented the game, but I have a PS2 rather than an XBox.
